In search of a Colorado Adventure Dog?

Look no further than Onyx! This guy was found on a reservation in southern CO and made his way to C.A.R.E. to complete his journey in finding a new home. We've learned that our 1.5-year-old shelter dog loves life, and is a friend to everyone he meets, including other dogs (although they should be okay with having an energetic pal around). After his sweat sesh, Onyx is ready to settle in and cozy up.

All dogs come with free post adoption behavior support to help get settled in and thrive with their new families (and learn clicker training, basic obedience, recall, you name it!). Now let’s get Onyx out adventuring in our beautiful state, where the action never stops 🌞🗻

A C.A.R.E. story of TRI-PAWD community support🐾❤

Kona's life changed the day she met Garfield County community member, Nicole Gordon. New to a New Castle neighborhood, and out for her morning jog, Nicole noticed Kona and her owner standing outside their home. When she stopped to introduce herself, the man explained that he was recovering from surgery and having difficulties with mobility. On a whim, Nicole offered to take Kona along with her for the jog - despite concerns that this little heeler with three legs might not be able to keep pace.

It was immediately obvious that Kona was capable of overcoming any challenge!

The rest is history. For the past two years, Nicole has been picking Kona up and taking her on weekly adventures. They enjoy hiking, playing fetch, and loitering around pickle ball courts 👀😋 In August, Kona and Nicole participated in C.A.R.E.'s Dog Day 5K race. They even registered their own fundraising team, which allowed their friends and family to donate to C.A.R.E. and community pets in need.

Kona's support network has also coordinated vaccine appointments so that she can remain in senior housing with her beloved owner. C.A.R.E. volunteer and board member, Cathi Basler, is another major contributor towards Kona's wellbeing. In addition to supporting Kona's fundraising goals, Cathi also volunteers her time to deliver nutritious kibble from C.A.R.E.'s Pet Food Pantry whenever her three-legged neighbor needs it.

Kona's story is one of Community, Compassion, Collaboration, and Home. These are some of C.A.R.E.'s core values. We believe that any pet who is lucky enough to have a safe and loving home should have every opportunity to remain with their people. Kona's success, health, and happiness emphasize the impact of shelter programs. We are so grateful for our fellow animal-loving community members. Anything is possible when we work together! 💕

Meet Peaches the Pittie 🥰

Our 2-year-old shelter dog is pretty great; she loves to let loose for fun in the sun, but is also eager to show off her sit, shake, and down skills. Peaches has a passion for people, including kiddos, and she's not shy about wanting to tear it up with other energetic dog pals (she especially loves being one of the boys). We hear she expects a soft spot in your bed at night too, so get ready for a 60lb bed buddy!

One of Peaches' biggest fans made sure her adoption costs were covered for the perfect new home. If that might be you, give us a call, get your adoption survey in, and come on by to meet Peaches!

Need Pet Food?

We're teaming up with Food Bank of the Rockies during Glenwood Springs mobile distributions this Saturday, September 20th! From 1:30-2:30 we'll be sharing dog and cat food with local families to help keep our community pets happy and well fed (please note, the lines start early for this one) 🐾

Can't make it? We also have a pet food pantry on-site at our GWS shelter, along with tons of free supplies. Give us a call to hear more, our pantry is currently very well stocked thanks to our Feeding Friends at Mountain Dog Pet Supply and RJ Paddywacks.

We ❤ Senior Pets!

Tigger is 17-years-young and is ready for her second family/person to step in. We heard she had a wonderful life being spoiled with dogs as her best friends, cats as pretty cool companions too, and was happy to engage in snuggles or playtime, depending on when the mood strikes! She’ll make a great companion kitty, ready to spend her days on a window perch, chowing down on treats, or just chatting away.

Check out the benefits of adopting a senior pet and our Seniors for Seniors adoption program, and get your adoption survey in for Tigger the cat today! And keep an eye on our site, we have 3 more senior dogs and cats arriving from our partners at Mesa County Animal Shelter next week (because seniors really are the BEST!).

Moki was too silly and too busy making biscuits to sit still for a photo shoot 🤦‍♀️

Our 2-year-old dilute calico came from our partners at For Pets' Sake in Cortez after being found living on her own outside, and she came with ears that were sunburned or frostbitten (or both). They’ve healed up nicely, and she got to spend some time in a foster home where we heard she can’t get enough chin scratches, is a sucker for lap time, and is a big talker! We’re not sure about how she does with other pets yet (it sounds like her comfort level around cats was improving in foster care), but we’ll continue to assess that during her time with us.

Come meet Moki and the rest of the C.A.R.E. cat crew!

Remember this guy?

Bullseye was spotted wandering around Glenwood Springs and had a lot of people checking in. While no one came forward to claim him as their own, he is now spruced up and all set with a dental and treatment for an aural hematoma.

And he’s super cool! Bullseye is very into carrying his squeaky ball around, getting scratches from his people, rolling in the grass, and is easy to harness up and head out for walks. He loves to play with his dog friends too! At 6+ years old, he has a few creaky joints, but is very young at heart (as you can see ☺️).

If Bullseye might be your new best friend, give our team a call or get your adoption survey in! The shelter is open Tues-Sun 11:00-5:00.

It's Happily Ever After for Ramen and Ravioli!
Our shelter boys came from our partners at Grand Valley Pet's Alive in Grand Junction, and they were not initially thrilled with shelter life (no surprise). As they were settling in, an amazing local came by to say hi, and ended up adopting!
We've heard that Ramen and Ravioli (now Sneaky Pete and LeRoi) settled in fantastically with the other rescue pets in the home, and they quickly “knew they were home.”
Thank you for adopting a bonded pair and the kind words shared, we’re thrilled to hear the great news (these two were very loved!).
To adopt your own rescue pet(s), look no further than the adoptables at C.A.R.E.

*ADOPTED!!*

Surprise, more puppies!

The shelter saw 4 more local pups walk through the door this week. And they couldn't be more different than the bear-themed litter of little bullies (who have all been adopted!).

The first 3 pups pictured are Jasper, Jacob, and Rosalie, who are reported to be Chihuahua/Terriers, 9-weeks-old, and currently weigh about 5lbs each (pocket-sized!).

Then there's Peanut, the lone tan puppy who is about 4-months-old and weighs 9lbs, he’s also going to stay a little guy (but with longer legs)!

If you’re considering adding a puppy to your life, be sure to check out the list of essentials required for caring for a baby canine 🐾

Still ready to take the leap? Get your puppy adoption survey in or give our team a call to hear more. The shelter is open Tues-Sun 11:00-5:00.

Our Mission

Colorado Animal Rescue (C.A.R.E.) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal care organization located in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. We serve as the animal shelter for Garfield County and the city of Glenwood Springs. Our mission is practicing excellence in animal care, education, and advocacy to connect pets to their people. We work to place animals in loving homes, encourage population control, and promote responsible pet ownership.

C.A.R.E. strives to be the premier animal resource center in our community and greater Western Colorado. In addition to serving as a pet intake and adoption facility, we offer spay/neuter assistance, training classes, school visits, a pet food bank, and much more.

Our shelter operates off the basic premise that all animals deserve access to medical care, food, shelter, and love. We are guided by the principles of the Five Freedoms and believe every animal should have:

  • Freedom from hunger or thirst
