Pet Tip of the Week
I Don’t Teach Dogs

When I’m working with a client, I often say, “I’m not teaching your dog—I’m teaching you how to teach your dog how to behave”.
An obedient and well-rounded dog is one that is told how to behave by watching for cues from his human. As a professional trainer, it’s up to me to teach his human those cues.
A dog does not instinctively know what behaviors are socially acceptable to his pack; he will learn these behaviors by being rewarded when he does the proper thing. This is called Positive Reinforcement.
Each training session, either in my studio in Gloucester City or in a client’s home, contains lots of information, examples, print-outs, and my book, “Training Your Dog with Love and Compassion”. If the client continues to apply the protocols, the dog will obey. I always let the client know he or she may contact me if a protocol is unclear or does not seem to be taking affect. There is no charge for a follow-up call, text, or email. In addition, if a client is struggling with an issue I will often offer a discounted, second session as a courtesy.
Training a dog is easy. Training a human is not as easy. But I will continue to use my methods—love and compassion—until I can no longer speak or write.
Please contact me at [email protected] or at 856.981.8957 if you need help with your dog.

Pet Tip of the Week (cnbnewsnet) By Dawn O. Watson
There is a growing trend in America to adopt dogs that were raised in a ‘puppy mill’—typically a facility in which female dogs are bred repeatedly and their offspring sold at auctions, farmers’ markets, and pet stores.
It takes a special person to take on the many challenges that adopting a former ‘mill dog entails. Comparisons have been made to children adopted from crowded, over-seas orphanages: attachment disorders and strange behaviors, sometimes permanent, may be evident.
Give the dog some space, at first. He or she will need to ‘unlearn’ some life-long behaviors before becoming confident enough to be hugged or petted. Be patient with housebreaking but encourage appropriate behavior.
Take the dog to your veterinarian within twenty-four hours of adoption unless you received him from a reputable rescue and have paper-work to prove that he is disease-free and up to date on inoculations. Make sure to have him or her neutered or spayed as soon as possible.
Set boundaries for your new buddy; don’t allow bad behavior to progress just because of a tough start in life. Always use positive reinforcement techniques so that your dog will trust your guidance. Speak with a professional trainer to see if the first few weeks after the adoption are progressing normally. As a professional trainer, I do not charge for a phone consultation and many of my colleagues feel that this service is standard and does not require a fee.
If I can be of service to you, please call me at 856.981.8957. Brother of the Wolf has been in business since 2008 but, as its lead trainer, I have been training dogs since 1975. My associate, Miguel Perez, was personally trained through my apprenticeship program and is captain of the South Jersey chapter of Love on A Leash, and is qualified to certify both therapy dogs and service dogs. Our Service Dog Program has successfully trained ten dogs to assist differently-abled individuals in the last year. Pet Tip of the Week
Introducing a New Dog

You’ve decided to bring home a companion for Fido, who has been your best (and only) buddy for several years. How do you make the transition from a one-dog to a two-dog, family?
First, introduce Fido and Fluffy on neutral territory—at a park or a friend’s yard. Enlist a friend to help you so that each of you controls one dog. Keep them both on-leash even if they seem accepting of one another. If, after about fifteen minutes, they’ve been engaging in respectful play, drop the leashes and observe them.
If the dogs exhibit signs of anxiety, keep them separate and at a distance from one another. Gradually decrease the space between them so they become accustomed to one another’s presence and no longer appear fearful or assertive.
Keep working with both dogs until you can safely bring them onto Fido’s turf. Remember, a dog that has claimed territory as his own may not willingly accept an intruder.
My book, Training Your Dog with Love and Compassion is available on Amazon.com, Amazon Kindle, and Goodreads.com. In it, you will find the answers to many of your training and behavior questions.
It is also available at the Gloucester City Public Library.

Most dogs have at least a minimal amount of prey drive. If you are considering the idea that dogs are descended from wolves you can see how a high prey drive might exist.

Some dogs are more 'prey' than predator. This may be viewed as a weakness by more assertive canines; care should be taken to protect them from situations that may be dangerous. Chasing games and tug-of-war games with other dogs should be controlled and supervised.

If you have a dog that seems to always be on the offensive please consult a professional about ways to decrease his likelihood of injuring a human or another animal. Dogs can learn to control their behavior but it is unlikely that they will control their instincts.

If you have questions about this or any other dog-related issue please give us a call. We are here to help you. 856.981.8957.
