Building a solid pack takes time and consistency. You have to make yourself the most interesting thing in the environment, you also have to be firm.
Behind each word I speak to a dog is confidence that they will listen. They seem to understand it. If I am half assed in a command or think it won’t work, 💯 % of the time it doesn’t. Dogs understand clarity. They can smell our fear our uncertainty. They admire in a calm leader and will do most anything the leader asks.
Some dogs need help understanding, so we use long lines or signal collar backups to translate, but once they get it, they get it. I watch their confidence grow and they start to bloom as they learn English.

Today Emma and I worked on developing her dog leadership abilities. It’s such an amazing process to watch, because if you can speak dog.
I swear you can do anything.

Welcome to the team, Emma! Emma has joined Tide Pool as a pet sitter, dog walker, and future right-hand lady for Tide Pool Phase Two. This phase involves expanding the pet care business to include a facility located on Cape Ann, ideally a rented house backing up to wooded areas. In this facility, up to six families of dogs would stay together with pet sitters, engaging in pack walks and training sessions throughout the day to create a calm and educational environment. Training and walking will be part of every day at Tide Pool, decreasing the incidences of fighting and frustration. What sets this apart from doggy daycare? This will be a home-like environment, set up with complicated dogs in mind. Creating multiple spaces where dogs who love to hang with other dogs can calmly do so, while providing spaces for reactive dogs to have space while still feeling like they are at home. This will be a place where they can build confidence and learn that we will never put them in a scary situation. What we need from you to make this dream happen is for you to keep your ears to the ground. We will need community help to make this dream a reality. If you know someone who wants to rent a piece of their property or who has a building they do not need, put us in contact. Creativity will be key.

It’s only a matter of time. Running through the woods has its benefits. However, humans love to leave glass and debris in the woods. Unfortunately my little bestie Abby cut her toe bean on that glass.
I took her to my car and packed the wound to stop the bleeding and then called her mum. Her mom took her to the ER where they applied a bandage. Abby will be just fine, but I’m a little sad. I wish that glass wasn’t strewn about these beautiful woods.
I wish that people would stop and think about the other creatures who get to enjoy these spaces.
It also makes me more determined to get a property and create a safe space for dogs to be dogs.

Training Violet to hop into her mums lap on command.
We started this by building her confidence over the last few months.
First we taught her the up command when she got into smaller platforms.
Then we added in little jumps and weave poles.
Finally we trained her to the stairs.
Training takes time and patience, issuing multiple modalities to instill confidence is key.

What post surgical care looks like at .
Violet had a spay operation and is recovering nicely.
I advocated for her to have proper pain management and medication that was easy for the owner to deliver.
Having been in the veterinary medicine field as long as I have comes with the knowledge that we can do better for pets and people. Even if it is not standard protocol. I will advocate for you and your pet when the going gets rough, in a kind and educational way.
My goal is to help veterinary staff understand owners and educate owners so they understand what their veterinarian is recommending and why. All of us want the pet to feel their best so we have a common goal.
Let’s normalize a collaborative approach to veterinary medicine and support those who love their animals.
