We went to dock diving with Cash and the first time with Ozzie. Roger knew something was going on when he got left and he wasn't very happy! Ozzie is a natural and was swimming and retrieving in just a few minutes. Cash started jumping off the ramp and ended up diving off the baby dock with a little help! He never has been a retriever but he was a pro in the water. It was so much fun. The season is over and until March we will be dry land retrieving!

I saw this post and thought I’d share. I, personally, have never liked face harnesses or body harnesses. There are pros and cons on both varieties and after I saw this post, I decided not to recommend a face harness at all. You can read and decide on what your thoughts are.

****Here is the vascular system in a canine head. This highlights the enormous amount of blood flow in the dogs nose. This blood flow serves many purposes, fuels the scent chambers, aids in temperature regulation, allows dogs to effectively track, but this also makes the dogs nose incredibly sensitive to touch. This is the main reason you should not use face harnesses. There are plenty of tools designed to communicate with dogs that do not put pressure on one of their most sensitive features. I Credit this post to Grant Teeboon AKA the PawMan****

As far as a body harness, I personally don’t like them. They have their benefits, but it is very important to have a harness which is properly fitted. The 2 main ways a body harness can damage the joints is by putting too much pressure on the joints or by restricting the dog’s movement. The main benefit of a dog harness is the shift in pressure from the neck to a larger area of the body. It is very important to note that a poor fitting harness can be just as bad for your dog’s well-being as a collar. Too much pressure on the wrong area can be very harmful. On a positive note, dogs that are suffering from a tracheal issue or neck pain, a body harness would be most beneficial.

This is very important piece of information for all dog owners. We first hand almost lost a 4 month old puppy (now 9 years) from suffocating from a grocery store baggie you get at the vegetable department. Our puppy got a bag off of my dresser that contained a few nuts. He was smart enough to come into the living room with the bag over his head, sucking the bag into his nostrils with every labored breath. If he would have not come to us for help, he would have suffocated. From that time on, we cut the sides of every chip bag and snack bag before throwing away. We also put snacks away and never leave them around.

It’s that time of year again! It can take as little as 15 minutes to have your dog gone due to heat exhaustion in a closed, hot car. Be careful leaving your pets and kids left in a hot car. ☀️🔥

Halloween is fast approaching. It is a fun time for kids and their families but can be a stressful time for your pets. Scary costumes, especially masks, can cause fear and aggression. Remember sounds are louder for your pet than humans. Spooky recordings, blaring music, and loud, boisterous kids can overwhelm your pets. Be extra cautious with Glow Sticks, second to candy and raisins, the Poison hotline is called for emergency help. Make sure your pet has a collar with their ID tag. Even the most social dog or cat can easily spook and bolt. Have fun but keep your pets safe. 👻💀🍭🍬

Please read and think about the activities you and your dog engage in and the possible negative issues these activities can cause.

As your dog retrieves the first...second...third...maybe fifth or sixth ball, his muscles start to tire and soon they reach overload, where they no longer can fully control and support your dog's movements. Now, when your dog does those amazing athletic maneuvers to snag the ball, soft tissues like the cranial cruciate ligament, iliopsoas muscle and tendon, and the muscles and ligaments that support the vertebrae are overstretching. Minor tears are occurring. Now the ball is thrown 10, 12 times or more and ultimately your dog lies down, exhausted.

That period between when your dog's muscles are in overload, and when your dog lies down exhausted, is the injury zone (Figure 1). But remember, with all that adrenaline, your dog doesn't feel the injuries happening, so you have no idea that the tissues are being used beyond their capacity.

When this game is repeated day after day, month after month, the small tissue tears become large ones, and suddenly it becomes evident that your dog is in pain and has an injury. Of course, it hasn't been sudden at all-what seemed sudden is just the final result of repeated stress and strain until the tissues gave way.
