We all want our furry friends to be happy and healthy, and a Fear Free approach to exercise is a fantastic way to achieve that! Did you know that regular exercise can significantly reduce your petโs Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS) levels? Hereโs how:
1. Stress Relief: Regular physical activity helps release pent-up energy and tension, leading to calmer and more relaxed pets. Exercise acts as a natural stress reliever, reducing anxiety and promoting overall well-being.
2. Mental Stimulation: Engaging in various exercises stimulates your petโs mind, keeping them mentally sharp and focused. Activities like puzzle toys, agility training, and interactive play can reduce boredom and associated stress behaviors.
3. Routine and Predictability: Establishing a consistent exercise routine provides pets with a sense of predictability and security. Knowing what to expect can significantly lower their FAS levels and create a stable environment.
4. Bonding Time: Exercise is an excellent opportunity to strengthen the bond between you and your pet. Positive interactions during playtime build trust and reduce fear, making your pet feel safe and loved.
5. Improved Behavior: Regular exercise can help alleviate behavioral issues often linked to stress and anxiety, such as excessive barking, chewing, or aggression. A tired pet is a happy and well-behaved pet!
6. Boosted Confidence: Successfully completing physical activities and challenges boosts your petโs confidence. This newfound confidence can translate to other aspects of their life, reducing overall FAS.
Remember, a Fear Free approach to exercise means keeping it positive, fun, and stress-free for your pet. Letโs embrace this holistic approach to improve our petsโ mental and physical health, making them happier and mor

Veterinary offices can be incredibly scary which can increase a pet's Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS). There are scents from other animals, scents of cleaning chemicals, strange people, a new environment, and they're potentially being poked and prodded. So what happens when we can perform some of those tasks in an environment where the pet is more comfortable and familiar with?
Not all treatment has to happen in an exam room (a scary enclosed space) or on an exam table (an uncomfortably high position). In fact, some veterinarians can even come to your house to provide necessary care. While this isn't a service our facility offers right now, we work to accommodate every animal however we can.
Part of being Fear Free is reducing FAS in which ever ways are feasibly possible. Inevitably, there will be some treatments that have to occur inside the facility or on a treatment table. For many treatments though, there are no rules on where it has to occur, so we can let the pet dictate where they are most comfortable. Even if that means in a car, in our lobby, or with the staff laying on the ground playing vet tech twister to get the pet in a comfortable position, then that is what we will do.
We work to accommodate each pet as much as possible to create a Fear Free experience at our facility, so schedule an appointment today at CPH.vet or call us at 303-277-0281!

The Fourth of July Holiday is NEXT WEEK!
Between the fireworks, parties, parades, unexpected guests, expected guests, loud sounds, and bright lights, the Fourth of July celebrations can be terrifying for your pet.
There are steps you can take to help keep your pet safe and calm during these stressful situations. Train your pet to go to a safe, comfortable, interior room with no windows on command, ensuring they have a retreat during scary noises.
Avoid exacerbating the problem by overreacting to your pet's behavior. Remain calm and distract your pet with treats, toys, or playtime. Playing soft, calming music can help drown out frightening sounds, and using an anti-anxiety shirt or snugly fitted t-shirt can provide consistent pressure to reduce their heart rate and help them feel calmer.
Lastly, consider anti-anxiety medications. Don't hesitate to talk to your veterinarian about short-term or long-term options for your pet. They may need an extra helping hand to manage their fears, and that's perfectly okay.
With the Fourth of July next week, now is the time to schedule an appointment to discuss Fear Free Medications for noise aversion if your pet needs them. Don't wait until the last minute!! Call us at 303-277-0281 to schedule an appointment today!

Nail trims can often cause an increase in Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS), so today, we're going to give you tips on how to make nail trims Fear Free at home.
Success is best achieved with patience; take is SLOW! Stress free body handling, body positioning, and paw target training are important steps when training your pet to have their nails trimmed.
First, pick a quiet spot for the nail trim. Once your pet is comfortable with the general area, work on making them comfortable in the position that you would like them in. Whether it's on a table, using a "Down" or "Lay" commands, or on a sofa even, take time to acclimate them.
Next, you'll train paw target behavior (or when a pet touches an object on command). In order to do this, you can start with a basic "Shake" or "Paw" trick and then move towards having your pet touch different objects, including the nail clippers. By encouraging your pet to touch the nail clippers, the interaction is their choice and it becomes less scary. This step may take time as you slowly acclimate them to the clippers (NEVER force your pet!).
Lastly we progress to actually trimming the nails. This make take multiple sessions and that's okay. Remember, we want to set the dog up for success and our goal is low stress.
Visit FearFreeHappyHomes.com and search nail trims for videos, pictures, blogs, podcasts and more.
If this still doesn't work, there are other options. Looking into a certified groomer or a specialized veterinary trainer/behaviorist can be beneficial as they have specific training and experience.
In the worst case scenarios, your pet may need to be sedated for nail trims. While this is never the ideal goal, if it is necessary for your pet, we are here to help. Schedule an appointment today at CPH.vet or call us at 303-277-02

Juneteenth is a federal holiday that celebrates the emancipation of enslaved African American people in the United States. Additionally, Juneteenth is a day to reflect on the inequalities and pain that African Americans have faced throughout history and in the present day.
President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, however, it took years for the law to be enforced across parts of the US. On June 19, 1865, Union Army General Gordon Granger and his federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas. He told the enslaved people that they were now free, and he shared the news that the Civil War was over.
Juneteenth is a day of celebration and hope; a day to pay honor and respect to the many people who suffered greatly under slavery; and a day to continue pushing in the fight for equality.

Fireworks and other loud noises are a common cause of fear, anxiety and stress (FAS) in pets. This FAS is due to noise aversion, which is a negative reaction to loud noises that are unexpected and don't come in a pattern, such as thunder, fireworks, and gunshots.
When it comes to thunder or fireworks, you can't always control when it happens or for how long, and that can be terrifying for your pet. But, there are steps you can take at home to help when triggering noises happen.
๐) Train your pet to go to a safe, comfortable, interior room, with no windows, on command. This allows your pet to know that they have a safe area to retreat to when there are scary noises.
๐) Work with a certified trainer for the prevention or treatment of noise aversion. Whether your pet is a baby with no noise aversion issues yet or a pet that has established noise aversion issues, training can help them.
๐) Don't make it worse by overreacting to your pet's behavior. This includes not only negative reactions, but overly comforting ones too. Overly consoling your pet or acting differently can reinforce their fearful behavior. Instead, remain calm and work on distracting your pet with treats, toys, or playtime. Play soft, calming music to help drown out the all the scary sounds.
๐) Try an anti-anxiety shirt or snugly fitted t-shirt. The consistent pressure of these shirts can help to reduce your pet's heart rate and make them feel calmer.
๐) Lastly, look into anti-anxiety medications. Don't be afraid to talk to your veterinarian about short term or long term medications for your pet. Your pet may need an extra helping hand to handle their fears, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Many Fear Free techniques involve a "slow and steady wins the race" approach to providing medical care for your pet. But what happens when time is a luxury that we don't have? This is often the case in medical emergencies where your pet requires immediate treatment.
Step one when seeing emergencies is appropriate triage. While we want to help all animals in pain as quickly as possible, sometimes painful, but not life threatening, situations have to wait. Those animals with life threatening injuries/symptoms are prioritized and triage allows the hospital staff to focus on providing care to those pets who need it most.
Step two is to examine the pet and provide whatever immediate care is needed. This can be medication administration or sedation through setting up an IV catheter, immediate diagnostics like x-rays or ultrasounds, or life saving procedures like CPR or intubation. FAS is usually highest during this time as Fear Free protocols may need to be altered or abandoned in order save an animal's life.
Step three is to figure out what the animal needs after they have been stabilized. Once an animal isn't at risk of dying or deteriorating, the staff can then work in Fear Free techniques to the rest of the care plan. This is the step where everyone can take a deep breath and focus on the pet's mental wellbeing and incorporate that into the care that they provide.
Thankfully, Fear Free has specific courses that help train veterinary staff on how to incorporate Fear Free techniques whenever possible in the event of an emergency.
While we are not a 24/7 ER, we are available for most urgent care situations. ERs can be scary, busy, and expensive, but are necessary for immediate life threatening situations.
If your pet has an urgent care situation, we are more than happy to

For our Fear Free post today, we wanted to show you some Fear Free applications in action. Miss Grace is an older Newfoundland and she has trouble walking on our floors. She slips, slides, and once she lays down, it's incredibly difficult to get all 125 pounds of her back up (especially when she doesn't want to help us).
So, in order to make her safer, more secure, and more confident, we make sure to have mats down for extra traction. In her case, after surgery, she needed to come from the back of our facility all the way out the front doors. So the staff made sure to cover that entire distance in mats.
This made it so that as soon as Grace got up, she was able to walk all the way out the front door without losing traction or slipping. This is just one of the many examples of how our staff go above and beyond to create a Fear Free environment for our patients.
If your pet needs special accommodations, don't hesitate and reach out today. Let us show you how we can provide a Fear Free environment for you pet's specific needs. Call at (303)-277-0281 and schedule an appointment today!

Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS) is common in many patients and that fear can quickly turn into reactivity. One of most common types of restraints to protect our staff and your pet from dangerous and potentially life threatening situations is a muzzle.
Muzzle training is an important skill for every dog to have, regardless of if they have behavior problems or not. If a dog becomes reactive, it can mean a bite, lawsuits, and potential euthanasia. Our job is to enhance the human-animal bond and keep our patients safe, happy, and healthy. Making sure your dog is muzzle trained can help prevent a bite on their record and potentially save their life.
There is a stigma around the use of muzzles and the dogs that wear them. These ideas need to go because we never know when a pet will be in a situation where a muzzle may be beneficial. Those situations include emergencies such as being hit by a car, introductions to new challenges, preventing them from eating something dangerous, or any unexpected event. Muzzles keep dogs safe when in public or around unfamiliar people, animals, and situations.
The Fear Free website has an amazing article on how to muzzle train your dog. They affectionately refer to them as "Party Hats" and show you exactly how to make the experience rewarding and pleasant. Pyometra is a very serious infection of the womb or uterus. If left untreated, it can lead to kidney failure, toxemia, dehydration and, in some cases, death.
Many different mammals including dogs, cats, humans, horses, goats, swine, rabbits and hamsters can get pyometra. Even if your pet has been spayed, if there is any remaining ovarian or uterine tissue, they are at risk. Most commonly though, this disorder is seen in unspayed female dogs.
A closed pyometra is when the cervix is closed, trapping the infection in the uterus causing toxins to build up in the blood stream. If the cervix is closed, your are less likely to see any vaginal discharge. An open pyometra is where the cervix is open, allowing some of the infection and pus to drain. There will be more noticeable discharge and the symptoms can be milder, but this does not make it any less emergent. The third type is stump pyometra which occurs in spayed dogs where ovarian and uterine tissue is left behind after a spay.
Drinking more than usual
โข Vomiting/Inappetence
โข Pus leaking from vulva/vagina
โข Bloated abdomen (tummy)
โข Panting and weakness
โข Increased urination or Diarrhea
โข Collapse
โข Fever
If you suspect your pet has Pyometra, get them to the nearest animal ER as soon as possible. Your pet will need life saving surgery to remove the infection and the surrounding tissues to prevent it from happening again. This is another reason it is incredibly important to spay your female pets. Not only will you help decrease the pet overpopulation and reduce the risk of cancer,
