Welcome to our python snakeskin tanning tutorial! Whether you're a seasoned pro or a beginner, this video is for you!
Amy Siewe, known as The Python Huntress, attracted our attention when we learned about her efforts to eradicate these invasive, non-native species from the Florida Everglades. Pythons have decimated up to 90% of the natural wildlife in some areas of this region. We share Amy’s sentiments on "saving the hide”, so it’s only fitting that we tan one of the snakes she caught using our Tan-a-Snake kit.

DIY Tanning Tip: The quality of the tan helps (of course 😉), but the real key to a successfully tanned hide is to take care of it from the beginning. Rick's motto holds true, "Treat it like you are going to eat it."
Be sure the hide is removed from the animal in a timely manner and either fleshed and salted right away or frozen (after the hide has cooled) It doesn't take much for bacteria to set in and this is what causes hair slippage. A healthy hide will have a bluish/white color after it is shaved.
Love this customer feedback:
"I wanted to let you know there are a lot of happy taxidermists and fur buyers the last couple of years I’ve tanned for that are all saying the same things about the final product from your tan and other products. They say it just feels clean when they go to mount it, zero grease in the bears and furs, their needle slips right through the skin without any issues of stitches popping through, the fur and hair is shiny, soft, and smells good (hair gloss/conditioner). I’m sure you’ve heard all that plus more since you’ve released the products but those are just a few things I’m hearing on a regular basis. Here’s a few furs going out to a trapper today after I finish grooming them."

DIY Tanning Tip Tuesday: Here's a tip to ensure your fur ends up soft and fluffy after tanning. As a final step in the tanning process, blow against the grain of the fur with a hair dryer (with no heat) while brushing it with a soft bristle brush.
Customer Hightlight! Sharing this from Donelda, one of our customers. This DIY, do-it-yourselfer, is truly an inspiration (did I mention also a great-grandmother?).
"My first raccoon. Picked it up at the side of the road, first one I skinned on my own, first eyes put in. Your tanning product is so great. The little guy is soft and pliable. It was a fun one!
Donald's tip on drying: I did put it in a frame to dry. I use the back of a wooden spoon to push and stretch in all directions a bit every day. I let it dry for 2 weeks in a room with gentle heat and a de-humidifier. Once it is not oily and slippery and pretty much dry, etc. I use the pumice/softening stone on it while it is still in the frame.
I do end up cutting off a bit around the edge of the skin where the holes are. Not much. I like the frame because my skin is flat when done."
Pickle Tan A-21 is a revolutionary product that can be used as a pickle and a tan. Unlike strong acids, the pickle works at a high pH. Then the tan also fixes at a pH of 4.3-4.5.
This product is developed specifically to prevent acid rot. It provides excellent stretch and softness. Pickle Tan has great hair setting and stitch-holding ability, and will easily rehydrate for a wet tan. These attributes make is great for flat tanning or taxidermy mounting.

DIY Tanning Tip Tuesday: Reminder, this time of year, it is key to do your tanning steps in a warm area, temps above 65 degrees are ideal. In cold weather, the tan takes longer and will not be as effective, and the oils will be too viscous (thick) to penetrate properly.
Warehouse progress! After many months of planning, designing, and patience we officially have a slab poured for our new warehouse. 🙌 Barring the Colorado weather, things should be moving along now.
DIY Tanning Tip Tuesday: Fortunate enough to fill all the tags in your hunting party? Salt is a key step in the tanning process and it is recommneded to flesh and salt as soon as possible after skinning. Salt draws out fluids and non-tannable protiens to help you achieve the best overall tanning results. Since it can take approx. 5-10 lbs of salt per hide, salt can be purchased more economically in larger bags to treat multiple hides and furs.

DIY Tanning Tip Tuesday: After tanning and oiling, snakeskins need to dry slowly. Larger skins can be worked (stretched and pulled) as they dry. It is best to keep an eye on the skin, but if you can't get to it (say overnight) and you think it is drying too fast, roll it up and then lay it out again in the morning.
