We finally got all of our twigs planted this week! They don't look like much, but those are our strawberry plants. I'll try to post updated pics as they grow - their growth rate is pretty fast so it won't be long before they have new leaves. They'll grow through our (hopefully) mild winter, then start production in early spring.

These were planted after the hail storm, so no damage to them. Can't say the same for the plastic mulch - weeds are already popping up through the holes made by hail. Yay!

Also, the pic of the riddled zucchini shows what our crops went through. All the squash and cucumbers are done, and even the bell peppers took a beating. I sprayed the green beans with a concoction of various things, and if the spray doesn't kill them maybe it will help them recover. I figured I didn't have much to lose.

And, planting continues. We started the second planting of lettuce, as well as more broccoli and cauliflower, which we should be able to transplant in a month or so. The first crop looks like it's going to recover, but it has been thrown behind some. I also have rows ready for planting more carrots, beets, and spinach. Maybe Monday....

Short version - Hail damage to crops, Tuesday market suspended for now, and more baked goods and canned goods for Saturday markets. Read below for full story.

Our produce production is going to slow down substantially after last night's hail storm. We'll have to wait a few days to see which crops are showing signs of recovery, and which ones are toast.

I think the squash and cucumbers took the worst beating, but the second crop of green beans isn't far behind, damage wise. Unfortunately, these are all warm weather crops, and the window for replanting again is passed, so if they don't make it that's all there is until spring.

The lettuce is somewhat torn up, but it will probably recover; this means a longer wait while it grows new leaves. The corn is laid over from the wind, but I think we can still get it picked when it's ready. The tomatoes actually don't look too bad, but there are some cracks and bruises on some of the fruit. The cole crops - broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage - also have some broken / split leaves, but I'm hoping they'll continue to grow and put out new leaves and then heads.

The transplanted beets were somewhat protected by a tree line, but the plants are flattened by the rain, and with all the fallen leaves on them it's hard to tell how much they were battered. I don't think it's too bad. The turnips and carrots are pretty small, so it's hard to assess them right now. I'm going to be planting more beets, carrots and turnips, so we'll have them eventually.

We weren't here when the storm blew through, but from the size of the dents and holes in the plastic mulch, I'd guess the hail was dime sized or so. Apparently it lasted a while, as the trees lost a lot of leaves and small twigs (and the okra is pretty stripped too). I haven't seen any damage to any structures so far, but I'll be checking the shingles on the house just to be sure.

So, at this point we're going to suspend the Tuesday markets until produce is available to do two markets a week again. We will continue to hold our Saturday markets, but there will not be much, if any, produce available for a while.

Instead, we will concentrate on having more baked goods and canned goods available, and we hope that y'all will continue to support us as we work through this. We'll continue growing, and hope for the best.

Andy & Michele

One of the cool things about being outside a lot is seeing beautiful little critters like these bumblebees. They have been really active in the afternoon on Michele's zinnia patch; there were about 8 or 10 of them working the flowers. They really like it when the purple hull peas bloom too, I think there were more bumblebees than honeybees on them when they were blooming.

And, we have several Texas Spiny lizards around. This little one (~3" long) was over by one of the old chicken pens, and I was able to get really close to him. There's another slightly larger one that hangs out by the seedling house, but he doesn't stick around to pose for me, lol. The biggest one (~8" long) hangs out by my shop, and I have seen him inside it as well. These are really cool lizards, and I hope they can stay safe from our cats!
