It is time to say goodbye to my favorite chestnut mare, Dream. She has foundered for the second year in a row, which means that her front feet are in a lot of pain. She tore a muscle in her hind end a while back, so her back legs are also weak, and she is having a very hard time getting around. After much waffling, her vet and I have come to the conclusion that euthanizing her will be the considerate thing to do.

If you would like to say goodbye to Dream and give her some love (no treats, still!), please feel come by between 8am-8pm on Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday. She is in her pasture at the south end of the farm, and students can go in with her with adult supervision.

I got a call from the trainer who I had gotten Rocky from two days after Pippa was born, offering me a mare that one of her students had outgrown. I said that I had just had a baby but I would send my husband to pick her up! Tomm graciously went to Prescott, loaded her up, and she has been a wonderful addition to our program ever since.

Sure, she has opinions (what chestnut Arabian mare doesn’t?!) but she has been safe and reliable for hundreds of riders over the past six years. The only time people have fallen off of her is because of trainer error when they didn’t tighten her girth (she has always had a tendency to hold her breath…).

We’ve taken her to pony club meetings, Special Olympics horse shows, obstacle course competitions, jumping shows, and trick riding clinics, and she has performed so steadily and consistently for every person she carries.

I haven’t had too many Arabians that I deem “unflappable,” but Dream fits that description. I’ll miss making her nightly grain-and-Prascend concoction and the futile battle of trying to keep her four white socks clean, and I’m so grateful that she has been a part of my life!

To sign up:
Email [email protected] or text 623-363-9202

Include your child’s name and age, which time slot you want, if you are using ESA funds, and any relevant information (horse experience, personality traits, etc).

If you can't attend any of the lessons, we do not offer make-ups or refunds for client-canceled lessons, but we will try to arrange a swap with another family with a scheduled absence.

Please let me know what questions you have. Thank you!

Elizabeth

Turkey has been really struggling with the heat recently, so he gets to spend the rest of the summer with Megan Bennett at her beautiful place in Seligman! If you’re looking for an easy peaceful getaway, check out Megan’s place — you can stay onsite and she can arrange riding lessons, trail rides, or almost anything you want!

You might have noticed….it’s hot out there!

We do try to have students ride in their lessons during the summer. Our cutoff is 110 — if it’s hotter than that, we will automatically do an unmounted lesson.

But — our horses are older, and if it’s 108 but we have concerns about their safety (or your kids’! or our instructors!), we will do
an unmounted lesson.

I love doing unmounted lessons with students because it provides an opportunity to learn about the 90% of horsemanship skills that we don’t get to work on during riding lessons.

Does your child know how to bathe a horse? Clean their tack properly? How do de-worm a horse? Know how much to feed and what to feed and why we feed them? Identify common colors, markings, breeds? How to measure their height and see if they are up to breed standards? Load them into a trailer? First aid, leg wraps, clipping, the list goes on and on!

Also — if you have concerns about your child being out in the heat and you would rather that they do an unmounted lesson in the barn, let your instructor know (ahead of time, ideally).

Less than three more months, we got this!

I am so sad to say that we have to say goodbye to our beloved Sniper. He has had neurological issues affecting his back end for two months and we are out of treatment options. He is getting progressively weaker in his back legs, and if we choose to do nothing, we will end up in an emergency situation where he will lay down to sleep or roll and be unable to get up on his own. Dr. Hendrix and I have scheduled a time for him to be humanely put down on Monday.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Sniper has taught hundreds of people how to ride. He is the most versatile boy who has handled everything thrown at him with an unflappable demeanor. Mounted shooting? No problem. Barrel racing? Sure. Trick riding? Easy. Go over some jumps? Yep. Pony Club mount? You got it. Photography model? I’ll strike a pose. The list goes on and on. Camps, birthday parties, lessons
— he will stand out as “my first horse” for so many kids.

I want to say a heartfelt thank-you to Lisa Kilpatrick and her family for letting us enjoy Sniper these last few years. He has been a precious part of our program.

We will have the gate open on Sunday from 4-8pm and Sniper will be in the barn in a stall if you want to stop by and give him some love and pets and carrots. He is sometimes unsteady on his feet, so please don’t go in the stall with him.

Parents, please feel free to reach out to me if your kids have any questions or want to talk. It’s always sad to lose a good horse.

This is my after-the-fact picture - but - we are so thankful for our wonderful neighbors at the pit next door! Our well unexpectedly and completely shut off at 3:45 yesterday and by 5pm Travis had dropped off a massive water truck. He is our hero!

We had an extra nine horses spending the night and it was crazy hot so having a huge amount of accessible water made such a difference. We were up pretty late filling buckets over and over and volunteers were filling them up again first thing in the morning. The well got a brand new pump today and is up and running, and it’s a good reminder to be grateful every time I turn on the tap and water comes out.

Thanks, Travis and ! We owe you some Girl Scout cookies!

** All spots are full! **

Hey, Goodyear, it’s your lucky day!

We have a new instructor that would like to get more hours before she heads back to college at the end of July, so we have openings for a five-week session, June 23 through July 27.

Lessons are all private. Students learn to groom, saddle, ride, and care for their horses.

Price: $50/week private pay or $60/week with ESA = $250/$300 for the session.

* Regretfully, none of these lessons are suitable for students with special needs as this instructor is not a certified therapeutic/adaptive riding instructor.*

These lessons are suitable for children ages 4-12 years old and will be with English saddles (jumping style).

To sign up:
Email [email protected] or text 623-363-9202.

Include your child’s name and age, which time slot you want, if you are using ESA funds, and any relevant information (horse experience, personality traits, etc).

If you can't attend any of the lessons, we will try to arrange a swap with another family with a scheduled absence.

Thank you, we look forward to having your child ride with us!

What do you think Bella is saying about her first Horse Powered Reading session? 😂

We did a Pony Express activity where the student created three ranches out of mailboxes, cones, poles, and buckets to deliver the mail to, read vocabulary words, sorted them into three categories and put them in Bella’s “saddlebags,” then delivered the words to their ranches, with more reading practice before the words were placed in the mailbox. Bella was such a good girl and the student enjoyed it so much that she requested to do the whole activity a second time, just for fun! Pretty awesome for a kid that informed me that she “hated reading” — time to change some preconceptions!

Coming soon to The Barn!

Steph LaClair and I are halfway through our Horse-Powered Reading certification. This is an engaging way to get kids excited about increasing their reading and math skills, but a huge part of the curriculum is increasing their self-confidence and willingness to try hard things without giving up.

HPR sessions can be customized towards children and teenagers of all ages and reading levels, and can be done in group or one-on-one settings. Its flexibility is a huge part of why we feel like it will be a great addition to our current equine programs.

Whenever someone asks me about doing their teaching hours at the barn to get certified as an adaptive riding instructor, I say yes, and as of right now, we have been able to let all instructors do this for free. I had a lot of people help and support me when I got my PATH certification, and I’m just trying to pass on the favor.

This morning we had a great group of three riders and nine volunteers helping with Ms. Ashley’s last big group training lesson. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible!
