T-3 months until the 2025 Challenge of the Americas…

Team BioStar is thrilled to once again present a new quadrille performance at the 2025 Challenge of the Americas (COTA) on Friday, March 7th!

COTA is easily our favorite night of the entire winter season, with proceeds benefitting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) through their partner, Play for P.I.N.K.

Tigger is keeping this year’s theme and performance a secret, but she did give us one hint:

”This year’s choreography is action packed…that’s all I will say. The eagle will fly.”

Holiday travel tips for pets 🎄✈️

1️⃣ White noise isn’t just for people
A white noise machine and pillows to block the crack under the door can save sleep for you, your canine companion, and anyone within earshot.

2️⃣ New = stress = GI upset
New water, new routines, new dogs to meet, and new environments are all stressors that affect the whole dog, especially the GI tract. Protect your dog’s gut health ahead of time! Encourage microbiome resilience with Hedgerow Boulardii K9.

3️⃣ Avoid the anxiety
If your dog is secure with crating, when your dog is in a new place, leave for shorter amounts of time than you normally would at home. Ideally, you would build confidence in the new place and come back before they are stressed.

Multivitamins: Your overall whole body insurance policy

Choosing the right diet and supplements for your horse can seem like an impossible task, and heading to the online horse forums rarely leads to a breakthrough.

While horse health is far from the easiest topic to digest, BioStar founder, Tigger Montague has a few tips to make choosing a multivitamin/multimineral or supplement program easier to navigate.

To start, it is best to view the incorporation of a multivitamin and mineral as a kind of insurance policy. While one supplement cannot tackle multiple vitamin or mineral deficiencies, Tigger considers a multivitamin and mineral as the foundation of her horses’ supplement program.

When considering a multivitamin and mineral just remember…

1️⃣ Identify the deficiency
You can have your vet run a routine CBC blood panel annually to see what their baseline is and the areas you can improve upon, as well as test your hay to see what vitamins and minerals it has and what it is lacking. This makes picking which supplement to feed much more clear.

2️⃣ Bioavailability is best
Bioavailability is perhaps more important than how many milligrams per serving of “XYZ” ingredient because the form of the nutrient matters as well.

3️⃣ No diet is set in stone
All horses are made differently and have different needs and have different jobs that put different stressors on them. Something that you found that worked for your horse at 10, might not work as well when they are 20. Consider their environment, workload, age, and overall picture of their life and their needs.

How to: Holistic Holiday Prep

While the holidays can be an exciting time with family, friends, food, gifts, etc…it can also bring on a special kind of “holiday stress.” This same stress that we humans feel, our animals can feel as well.

Whether it is a crowded home for your dog or a change in schedule for your horse while you are traveling for the holidays, stress often builds within and impacts the GI tract.

The brain has a direct effect on the stomach during stress, sending signals that danger is imminent. In response, the stomach reduces blood flow to the GI tract. Conversely, a troubled GI tract sends signals to the brain which results in anxiety or behavioral issues.

Bone Broth to the rescue ⛑️
