*EDIT* class is sold out!

I'm very proud of the wheat we produced last year but it's just too valuable to sell so this is the only way I'll be offering it.

The class will be at the farm, in my kitchen, which is just a normal kitchen, not a laboratory or a film set.

Bring a pad of paper if you'd like to take notes. Please no filming during the class.

Bring a kitchen towel to take your loaf home in. The less single-use packaging in the world, the better.

Most importantly, I think 'those people' who started policing your cast iron skillet use have gotten their grubby mitts on sourdough and made many beginners think they can't possibly follow the seemingly endless list of rules, or that its just not worth all the hassle. Well, I've broken most, if not all, of those rules and still come out with an edible loaf and I'm here to say, the hassle, as minute as it is, is worth it.

I'm no great baker but what I do have is a really great starter that has been getting stronger since 1791. This starter has seen the invention of the cotton gin, the Louisiana Purchase, the invention of the Telegraph, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Great Depression, both world wars, and of course not only the publishing of the greatest trilogy of all time, but also its eventually film adaptation by New Zealand director Peter Jackson, both of which the world is better off for. You cannot hurt this starter. She's been through it.

We have no indoor cats.

We picked up the work that had been hanging in Lennie's this evening, and of course had a very nice dinner that ended in Bloomington’s best dessert, the ‘original sin’ which if you haven’t tried yet, I highly recommend.
It’s definitely a two or more person portion.

I had a great show at Lennie’s and I’m very thankful to my friends who invited me to show my work.

Lennie’s is one of our favorite restaurants and I highly recommend everyone to stop in as often as possible! Great people, great food, great atmosphere, and great service!

On this day 9 years ago I made the switch from oil paints and really hunkered down on the watercolors. Nine years of practice and nine years of growth! I’ll probably have to celebrate a decade of watercolors next year. I’ll think of a smart way to do that. Maybe a special show 🤷🏾‍♀️ maybe a series.

Today we tapped our sugar maple trees to harvest maple syrup! For sap to flow, you have to have temperatures above freezing during the day and below freezing at night. We’re finally there! We’ve drilled three times as many taps as last year and we ended up with about half a gallon of syrup in 2024. I’d like to have enough maple syrup to use it in cooking without feeling wasteful. I’m not trying to sell syrup, but I may sell sap. We’ll see. It’s all part of the plan to step away from white refined sugar.

A little note on staying warm in the cold: This morning was 2 degrees and I was sweating outside. Natural fibers are where it’s at. There are many fancy outdoors companies that sell expensive plastic clothing marketed for extreme cold but at the end of the day, you’re just wearing microplastics. The most important thing is to stay warm with what you can afford of course but the wool sweater I’m wearing today cost me $20 at a thrift store. Wool, silk, animal hides and fur, etc will keep you incredibly warm. I remember when we were told that wearing cotton would kill you in cold conditions because once it got wet you were done for. Turns out if you layer right, cotton won’t kill you; but we all bought into it and were sold microplastic clothes as a ‘better alternative’. I stopped buying plastic clothes a year ago. #socrunchy

The unseen side of the farm: Brian Gessler. My husband is a 6’4” hunk of muscle without whom this farm would not be successful. We’re in the market for a 4WD tractor with a bucket but for now and for the past 5 years, human power has driven most of the progress here. And what progress we’ve made! Brian also harvested our entire wheat field by hand.

I looked up from my work to catch a nice surprise dusting of snow today!
