Carly from Hastilow Competition Saddles was out today to do evaluations on 3 horses. She is so thorough, knowledgeable & professional. Takes her time with obtaining horse information, history & data and complete evaluation of horses conformation. I have been riding in my new Albion K2 for a year and love it. Most importantly it truly fits both my horse & I and adjusting it for the perfect fit is never an issue. As an equine body worker, I can tell you that many horses issues stem from improperly fitting tack. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!!!!

As show season starts to get into full swing, think about keeping your performance horse at peak performance. If you haven’t been conditioning them over the winter or have slowed down a bit, start the workouts slower and less strenuous. Faster isn’t always better, especially when it comes to the muscular system. This system makes up 60% of your athletes body weight. Take care of it and it will last longer with far less injury.

Interesting read.

👀🧠🐴 Here are 15 interesting facts about a horse's brain:

1. A horse's brain is relatively small compared to the size of its body, making up only about 0.1% of its total weight.
2. Despite their small size, horses have very complex brains, with a highly developed cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for conscious thought, decision making, and memory.
3. Horses can learn and remember complex tasks, such as navigating a jumping course or performing a dressage routine, through a process called associative learning.
4. Like humans, horses have a left and a right hemisphere in the brain, each with specialized functions. The left hemisphere is responsible for logical and analytical information processing, while the right hemisphere is more involved in emotional processing and creative thinking.
5. Horses have great memories and can remember specific people, places, and experiences for many years.
6. Horses can learn by observing and can often pick up new behaviors and skills simply by watching other horses or humans.
7. Horses have a very sensitive sense of touch and can detect even the slightest pressure or movement on the skin. This helps them respond to subtle cues from their rider or guide.
8. Horses can process visual information very quickly and accurately, allowing them to avoid potential danger and navigate their environment with ease.
9. Horses are social animals and rely on non-verbal communication to interact with other horses in their herd. This communication is facilitated by the horse's brain, which can interpret subtle changes in body language, facial expressions, and vocalizations.
10. Finally, like all animals, horses have unique personalities and individual characteristics that are shaped by their experiences, genetics, and environment, all of which are reflected in their brain function and behavior.
11. Horses have a very strong sense of smell and their olfactory bulb, which processes odors, is relatively large compared to other parts of their brain.
12. The cerebellum, which is responsible for coordinating movement and balance, is also relatively large in horses. This is because horses must be able to move quickly and efficiently to escape predators or navigate difficult terrain.
13. Horses have a very high pain threshold, which is thought to be related to the way their brains process pain signals. While this can be beneficial in some situations, it can also mean that horses may not show overt signs of pain, making it difficult for their keepers to detect and treat underlying health problems.
14. The hippocampus, a part of the brain involved in learning and memory, is particularly well developed in horses. This allows them to remember not only specific experiences, but also general concepts and patterns that they can apply to new situations.
15. Finally, studies have shown that horses, like other animals, are capable of experiencing emotions such as fear, happiness, and anger. These emotions are thought to be mediated by the limbic system, a group of interconnected brain structures that play a key role in regulating mood and behavior.

In racing we measure success by wins and losses. When our horses lose we turn the page and try again next week. But some losses are final, and unacceptable. This loss at Tioga Downs is incomprehensible. Here are their names. They all had their own story.

All horses need deep sleep overnight that requires lying down completely. Stall size, bedding, and stress can cause horses to get insufficient rest.

Dearest Riders,

Please let me remind you of something very important. Horse showing, riding and training are insanely difficult. If you have a crappy ride, a less than stellar show ring result (or if you made your trainer want to pull their hair out today), it just means there's more to learn. The people who had good rides today are not exempt from disappointing rides tomorrow. They also have bad days and, if they're very experienced riders, they've had a whole bunch of bad days.

There will always be someone out there on a more talented horse, someone with a bigger bank account, someone who never struggled to learn to sit the trot...life isn't fair. You probably can't win the lottery or grow 5 more inches of leg. You can, however, wake up every morning and be thankful that you're able to ride horses. Work hard at becoming the best rider you can be with the body and the bank account that you have right now. Work at being the rider your horse wants up there on his back. Your horse's opinion of your riding is more valuable than any judge's opinion could ever be.

Horses travel every day for a number of reasons—to be bought and sold, for competition, for breeding purposes, etc. Whatever the reason, horse owners should be aware of the complications that may occur due to transportation, including traumatic injuries, diarrhea, muscular problems, respiratory problems, overheating, colic, and even laminitis (in the case of overweight horses).

Following are a few tips to help your equine friend maintain good health and welfare during transport. This list is by no means complete and we encourage you to reach out to your veterinarian for additional advice when it comes to traveling with your horse!

• Be aware that inadequate management of feed and water intake during travel could cause colic, gastric ulceration and heat stress. Food and water should be provided prior to transport, during regular rest breaks and upon arrival at destination.

• Ensure your horse’s immunizations are up to date against respiratory pathogens to protect your animal from these diseases.

• The horse should be rested before the journey, given rest stops during travel, and have time to recover on arrival at the destination.

• The vehicle should be well-ventilated to help prevent respiratory problems or overheating.

• Drive slowly and carefully (NO TEXTING, avoid driving when fatigued or eating while driving, etc.) to provide a comfortable journey for the animal and reduce the risk of injury and fatigue.

Happy trails!

Microcirculation takes place in the area of the smallest blood vessels and is not visible to the naked eye. Nevertheless, it has a great impact on the health and performance of your horse, because that's where metabolic processes take place: cells are properly supplied with Oxygen and Nutrients to perform their natural tasks and metabolic end products are efficiently disposed of. The BEMER Horse-Set stimulates muscle tissue to engage the microcirculatory system and increase blood flow to all areas.

While the sympathetic nervous system prepares the horse for mental and physical performance, its counterpart, the parasympathetic nervous system, is responsible for rest, recovery, and regeneration. The BEMER Horse-Set covers a large part of the equine musculature. Through strategically placed coils, the patented pulsed-electro-magnetic field (PEMF) therapy distributes its beneficial effect on the entire horse’s body.

K.I.S.S. Theory behind saddle design/fit.

If these basic principles are not met- the saddle is not fitting with anatomy and biomechanics driving it’s design. It’s that simple. However, simple does not mean easy to find.

If we ignore anatomy and biomechanics of both horse and rider we are doing a disservice to our equine athletes. If you want your horse to be a top athlete- we have to treat them as such. This is why we are pushing for new research and new product design.
