With these crazy high temperatures we've been having, there are things you need to consider to protect your pet, and steps you can take if they get do have a heat stroke.
Keeping your pet indoors during these high temperatures is best, but obviously that's not always feasible. Make sure your pet has plenty of shade and water. Having a fan or mister is very helpful, or even a kiddie pool.
If they do get heat stroke, some of the things you will notice are rapid breathing, excessive salivation, gum color will be pale or gray instead of pink and can progress to neurologic symptoms such as seizures or being comatose.
If your pet does develop heat stroke, they definitely need to be seen by a veterinarian right away, because it can effect multiple body systems. The best thing to do in the meantime is to put them in a cool bath. Cold tap water only, NOT an ice bath. Placing a fan on them while in the bath is even better. Do not place cold towels on them as that can prevent evaporative cooling.
Prevention is the best medicine to prevent heat stroke!

I get a lot of questions about what services I offer. First and foremost, it's a house call practice. I come to your home to take care of your pets. I offer wellness exams and all vaccines. Heartworm tests and 6 or 12 month heartworm preventive injections.
I also offer sick patient exams. Your typical vomiting/diarrhea cases, ear infections, eye problems, itching/skin problems and respiratory infections, just to name a few of the more common issues seen. This includes disease management, such as for diabetics and heart disease cases.
I do surgeries such as spays/neuters, mass removals, and laceration repairs. I do other surgeries, but due to limited space, I have to carefully pick and choose those. Contact us if you have any questions about a surgery.
I offer ultrasound services for pregnancy verification, and diagnostic purposes.
When the time comes to make that difficult decision, I do at home euthanasia as well.
Due to limited space, I use an online pharmacy that will ship to you for flea preventives, heartworm preventives other than the injectable, and many other medications.
Services I don't provide are radiographs, dental cleanings (just don't have space for equipment required to do quality dentals), or capabilities for hospitalization for issues that require that.

While I'm taking care of patients, the owners often strike up a conversation about my history, so I thought I would share some details about myself.
I graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. I owned a small animal practice in Lewisville for 23 years. An opportunity to sell my practice arose, so I sold it in January 2020. I stayed on for a while to assist in the transition of the new owner. The past 2+ years, I have been doing relief work, filling in doing medicine and surgery at various clinics that were in need of assistance. My family and I moved to Graham 2 years ago, and it has been great! Several months ago, I decided to begin a mobile house call practice in the area, and as of early May, the rest is history...albeit a short history.
