Here at Rush Pack Dog Training I strive to help you develop a better, more long lasting relationship with your dog. I help find ways for you to connect with your dog at their level (through mental & physical stimulation) while also finding ways to help your dogs connect with you on your level (boundaries, rules & structure). Just like human children it is our job to show our dogs how to exist in t

he world through daily living. Also just like humans most dogs need extra curricular activities & hobbies to keep their minds & bodies fresh. We want to hep you find ways to have fun with your dog, to truly bond with them while also setting appropriate rules & boundaries

Training can be hard & frustrating, teaching our dogs to understand human life can be challenging - and that is where I come into play. I will help you understand body language, how your pup is thinking & ways to speak dog without actually speaking dog. No two dogs are alike just no two households are built the same, which is why I provide custom training programs to fit you and your family's specific needs.

This week we had a special guest, Zuko.
This 14 week old Italian Greyhound Mix learned all about city life, living with the big dogs and adjusted to a new routine beautifully.

We dabbled with his toy drive - he prefers toys that keep moving 😉. Worked on recall and fun obedience with his puppy raiser friends.

He spent the last week with my while I was in Manhattan.
We worked on mostly leash skills & impulse control as well as started ecollar conditioning. We also played on the dock to help him & his mom have a much more coordinated routine. He was such a fun dog to work with 🥰.

If I could give all new puppy/dog owners 1 piece of advice (okay, let's make it 2) it would be this:
1) Kennel training is more than just for potty training.
2) Hand feed as many meals as possible for the first year.

I read a meme last week, naturally I forgot to save it, but what it said-ish was:
"Using a kennel while you're gone safeguards your puppy's body. Using a kennel while you're HOME safe guards their minds."

Kenneling is not only required to help keep your dog from pottying inside or from getting into something they shouldn't but it also helps to teach them how to self sooth, that it IS okay to be alone and that they don't need to constantly be active/alert/or awake. They actually NEED time to shut their brain off and completely decompress/shut down.

Hand feeding is one of the best ways to bond, grow a relationship & really boost your engagement with your dog. Using their daily meals for training helps build their food drive, helps teach better work ethic, helps add value to your relationship and will make their treats THAT much better!

I promise, doing these two things will greatly improve the lives of all humans and dogs involved.

Need a little extra help? Set up a consultation with me today and we can discuss how to further help you and your pup.

The next couple months are going to be busy ones around here.

Not only did my personal pack welcome a new member (Ridge - right), but Ridge’s sister Six will be spending lots of time here for a custom puppy raising board & train.

Ridge & Six will both be working on exposure, socializing, confidence building & basic OB foundation. We will also work on drive/toy building as both girls have high hopes to be dock stars when they grow up! 🥰

Until a year ago, I was a trainer with a very force free approach. I didn’t believe there was a place for aversives in dog training. I didn’t have a dog that required them. Lucky me!

Until I got this chap. My very much adored kelpie, Evo. Bred to move HUGE flocks and herds of livestock out in rural Australia. A hard-headed dog, with a mega independent streak.

I worked hard with him. I’m a trainer. I laid my foundations, as I have done successfully with my other 4 dogs before him. They worked, to a point. And then, they didn’t.

I was fully prepared to give him a breed-appropriate outlet. Alongside the other work I give my dogs, I have my own sheep, meaning I can work my own dogs regularly on stock. However, my small flock of flighty sheep was far too jumpy for him to work, and he was becoming dangerous out and about in any sort of proximity to sheep.

So, you may say, just keep him on a lead! Problem solved. Well, not really.

Management can and does fail. I have heard it from countless clients. I have had it fail myself.

I also live, with sheep on my property, and surrounding it on 3 sides. Everywhere we turn, there are sheep. There’s no avoiding them.

Keep him on a lead in the garden? We have a large garden and keeping him on the lead would be unfair. He’s an incredibly active, working bred dog, who would end up spending his entire life on a lead.

We also encountered prey drive issues out and about, particularly around deer. His recall was fantastic, but once we moved, our walks were either full of deer, or sheep and he could rip a long line out of your hands to chase something particularly tempting.

So, I decided to bite the bullet and e-collar train. Controversial, particularly online.

But, the absolute best thing I ever did.

The alternative solutions I had suggested were:

Keep him on the lead - I buy good quality leads, but they have failed on me before
Move house - we’ve moved to a dream house, not an option
Avoid places with sheep etc - hard when they’re in the garden
Long line - he could still pull a long line out of reach
Train him - he was trained to a very high level and we had reached the limits via force free methods.

Management fails.

I went through the process of conditioning him properly to the e-collar. I spent ages ensuring I got it right, he understood what was expected and that he knew how to switch it off. I invested in a pricey bit of kit, and I went about it by the book.

It’s transformed his life.

He can romp around the garden, he can walk through my sheep without batting an eyelid, he can walk off lead on the hills and he can enjoy walking in the forest even when deer run out in front of us.

For him, that wasn’t ever going to be an option without it.

Nothing was more reinforcing than chasing.

And it was going to get him killed. He’d have been shot, or hit by a car, or lost. All because I wouldn’t open my mind to using different tools.

Am I suggesting every dog requires one? Absolutely not. But there are MANY cases where they save lives. It’s both saved and enriched his.

He’s happy, he lives his best life. He hikes everywhere with us, he’s well mannered and fully reliable off the lead. He knows the rules, and that’s the key.

He’s not suppressed. He can still go off and be a dog. He tears around the garden with our other dogs, he sniffs and does dog things. But he’s safe when doing it all.

I see a lot of judgement towards these tools from people owning dogs who would never require these tools. That’s great. And that’s also not a problem. But it is completely unfair to demonise the use of a tool which you haven’t taken the time to fully understand. I was 100%, without a doubt, against them before I took the time to understand how they worked and how they were used.

It’s imperative that they’re used with a trainer well versed in using them. It’s also crucial that the equipment used is good quality and not something cheap from Amazon or eBay. It’s an investment, but one that is so necessary for a lot more dogs than you might realise.

Take the time to understand others’ points of view. There is truly not a one-size-fits-all approach in dog training and my change of opinion has opened up a whole new world for all of my dogs ❤

This adorable girl had her go home session today and although I thought she was going to choose chaos, she actually did amazing.

I hope she is being the goodest of girls now that she’s home.

Fun news she’ll be back in a couple weeks while her humans go out of town! ❤️

It’s moments like this that we’re reminded Dixie is only 6 months old 😂. All I care about is she stays in her bed, which did even though the bone, did NOT. ❤️

Dixie is gearing up to go home this week, we’re doing quite a bit of duration place work (especially with this glorious weather).

She’s doing fabulous!

Also, on a fun note, we got a weight on her today. At roughly 6.5 months old, Miss Dixie is weighing in at just over 100lbs!!! 🤯 Get a Boerboel they said, it’ll be fun they said 😉.

Merry Christmas from all of us to you. 🎄 ❤️

Dixie had her first outdoor place session.

We spent 5-10 mins on recall/remote collar training before doing some place work - which is why she had her ecollar on but it is NOT used for this particular session.

She did awesome! The goal is down, down is how we get food/released. We’ve been doing place during meal prep (after morning/evening training sessions she places while I put the remaining food in some puzzle toys for her to beat around her kennel).

Notes:
“Place” - just means put your feet on the bed & keep them there. I personally don’t get if they sit/down/stand, I just want them to stay on the bed. Down is ideal & preferred but sitting isn’t “wrong”.
“Good” - marks anything she does that I like; gets on the bed, sits/downs, stays
“Break” - get off the bed/come to me for reward - that I’ll eventually phase out.

Also enjoy the “so proud of you” lovings that follows each session. 🥰

12/05/2023

Y’all know much I love being in videos 😂.

But I decided to suck it up, so if you make it through the whole thing I appreciate you.

Today I reintroduced Dixie to the remote collar. Her humans have used it a couple times previously, but I wanted to start over from scratch and do things how I prefer to do them.

The biggest way the ecollar gets “abused” is when people just put it on their dog and start correcting wrong or unwanted behaviors. This tends to lead to dogs that are shut down, sad or afraid to try new things. But, did you know, remote collar training should take weeks if not months before they ever actually become a “no” and if done correctly the do not in fact create just down dogs but build dogs up.

Just like any training tool they require a foundation. Your dog first needs to thoroughly understand their commands, they then need to thoroughly understand how to turn ecollar stimulation off (be it tone, vibrate or stim). Then your ecollar might be able to become a no.

Other things to keep in mind; don’t take off and put on right before and right after training - this will help avoid collar smart. I usually put them on, let them go potty/run around and then go train. Once we’re done I’ll rotate the collar and then let them keep wearing it during the day/while I’m home.

The goal with this training session was to start teaching Dixie how to turn the stimulation off. First step, finding her working level - which is currently a 10. Next step is using her knowledge of recall (“here”) to help teach what the stim means.

I’ll press the stim button, follow that with her recall command (help with the leash/body language as needed), as soon as she turns I’ll release the stim and mark with a “yes”. We will rinse & repeat this process over the next 2-3 days - or as long as it takes for her to feel the stim and start recalling before I ever actually say “here”. 😃

Dixie has been so much fun to work with!
We’ve spent the last several days getting into a nice routine. Her humans have done a fabulous job with her foundational obedience. We’ve been working on her sits, downs & place for half of each meal.

This week the weather is going to be super nice so we’ll spend lots of sessions outside. I think we’ll start introducing the ecollar tomorrow - she is wearing it in this video, but just to get used to it being on.

Some key points:
She is working for her meals 😉
“Good”/“Good girl” = good job, keeping doing what you’re doing (ie: sit/down). It also means the reward is coming to you in your position.
“Yes” = job completed, you can move, come get your reward.
“Break” = her release word that lets her know she is can move from position - eventually it’ll be a reward in itself, but right now I’m still rewarding her. She is free to “do what she wants”.
“Eh Eh” = wrong, try again or go back to position

Everyone meet Dixie. She is a 6 month old Boerboel. She’s going to be a lot of fun!

Dixie is here to work on some manners, not jumping, exposure, socializing and ecollar training.

Her humans have already started a great foundation and I look forward to continuing to build on it.

She was dropped off last night, so we’re still getting into a routine but we’ve successfully worked for 2 meals, had lots of playtime and learned that kenneling/going inside is nonnegotiable. She’s already doing fabulous. 🥰

Both boys can do neutral, can be friendly or can give fair corrections when needed.

Everyone meet Xavia.
This beautiful girl has been chilling with me since Monday (I’ve been meaning to get pictures and of course videos, but between the rain, humidity and life it hasn’t happened yet).

Xavia is here for another week, we are working on ecollar training as well as drive building.

So far she hasn’t show any interest in toys, but we’ve been playing with food and a little bit of personal play.

She’s a super sweet girl with big sport dog dreams. 🥰

Emina had her first adventurous weekend!

She went swimming and is a natural.
She rode in the side by side and smashed it!

Made lots of friends, humans & dogs alike.

She also adjusted to staying somewhere new like a complete pro.

Emina is looking for a home to call her own. Contact Věčné štěstí German Shepherd Dogs if you have any questions.

07/14/2023

Mina says it’s storming? And? 🥰 I often hear clients say “My dog doesn’t like the rain.”, “My dog won’t potty when it’s raining.”

And when I ask, “Have YOU gone out into the rain with them?” They typically respond with a form “of course not”. If you don’t exposure your puppy to rain, to storms, to loud noises why would they be used to them?

I had just gotten back from a client session, which means I woke Emina up, which she had to go potty. So, we stand outside, in the rain, together until she goes.

This trip was going to be a quick potty break (so I didn’t grab food or a toy) as she has experienced rain before. But I decided after she peed that we were going to do a little playing in the rain after all cuz how could I pass up an opportunity for the exposure. This also meant I was the reward.

Emina decided to take my nice “exposure/engagement” video and go a little “feral” instead, after all, fast and quick movements engages prey drive 😉 and she’s a bitey puppy, which means she’s going to bite.

Now typically I would’ve grabbed food or a toy and quickly redirected her onto something else. But alas I didn’t have that, so, we winged it 😂.

I DON’T punish, scold or correct biting. She has NO idea that’s wrong, she has NO idea there are other options; it’s my job to teach her. So, I show them what to do instead; bite a toy, sit/engage for nicely for food. Or I got to pick them up/run away in hopes they stop ahahaha.

07/11/2023

Little Miss Emina had her first intro to two ball - go get one, bring it back and the 2nd you comes to life, in theory they drop the 1st to play with the 2nd; or if you wanna be extra like Emina, you hold the 1st one and still chase the 2nd 🤣.

What you see here is our entire little outing (with the exception of 2 throws before I started videoing). Keep things short, fun and safe for puppy joints. I will only do this once a day or once every other day.

07/08/2023

Having stable dogs to help socialize and puppy raise is something I will never take for granted.

When I socialize puppies - in the sense of letting them interact with other dogs, I prefer to use adult dogs who enjoy puppies, who can give gentle yet fair corrections and play nicely. Puppies playing with puppies can be okay, but most puppies will suck at appropriate play and being able to “stop”, so they don’t learn good interactions.

I will NEVER let puppies interact with a dog I don’t know or a dog that their humans do not have control over. The dogs I don’t trust become the dogs we learn to ignore. Or if we’re in a public setting, engaging with random dogs is a no, therefore socializing actually becomes exposure, existing but ignoring; neutrality 😉.

Emina has officially been introduced to everyone but Daisy - who can be a little extra with puppies, so in due time. I failed of a picture with her & Bronson/Dax - next time ❤️.

So far Emina loooooves all the dogs. 🥰

Our Story

Every dog, every owner and every situation is different. We have learned that when working with dogs we need to be flexible in the methods and training that we use. We need to have the ability to adjust to the needs of that dog in order to better accomplish the desired behaviors. We believe that being a good leader and building trust is the key to having a stable and well balanced dog. A strong leader is calm and confident. Learning to recognize canine behavior and how to better communicate with them is an important tool when owning any dog. It is our responsibility, as humans, to teach our dogs what is acceptable and what is not. As training instructors our goal is to provide you with the tools you need to properly train and to better communicate with your dog. That way, at the end of the day, they can be a happy, balanced and well-mannered part of your family!
