Can dogs lick from affection ? Absolutely ✅
Can they lick from feeling anxious ? Yes ✅
Not all licking is appeasement licking. Appeasement licking is usually paired with other stress signals or calming signals and I know that may be tricky for some to notice.
This is one of those behaviours that dogs show us that can be very misread.
Affection ❓Greeting ❓Stress ❓

Licking is completely normal for dogs. It can be a healthy and socially acceptable behaviour between other dogs. It is relaxing, soothing and can be displayed for so many reasons.
However appeasement licking can also be shown to other dogs too, even ones they know and live with.

If you are in any doubt over why your dog licks either you or another dog, video the interaction.
Watch that video and look for tell tale signs of stress (some are mentioned in the graphic).

One of the worst feelings in the world is when I have to inform someone that those certain types of "kisses" do not come from a place of affection but can be from a place of fear, mistrust and stress.

With time to acclimate Gus is going to be a great part of your family.

It is NOT our fault that your dog got out.

It is not our responsibility to update your dogs microchip information.

It is not our responsibility to provide an ID tag for your dog.

As an animal shelter we are here to provide a safe environment for local animals that are lost, strays , abandoned or seized.

If YOUR dog requires medication, a special diet etc. the officers transporting your dogs to our shelter would not be aware nor would our shelter staff.
YOU the owner must be aware of your dogs whereabouts at all times.

We get it , accidents happen, dogs get out!

You the owner must provide appropriate ID required by NYS ( ID TAG & RABIES TAG on the dogs collar at all times ) to ensure a quick return home.

Yes our shelter has OFF hours. OFF hours means our shelter staff is assessing dogs with our behavioral & medical team. Vet Appointments & Surgeries , Training with dogs, Meet & Greets with rescues , kennel care etc.

If you leave a voicemail during OFF hours , our shelter staff will Return your call the next business day. This information is also provided on our website www.thepitchic.com

As a reminder for Stray Holds- dogs are NOT available for foster or adoption during the stray hold period.

The first 24 hours do not count towards the stray hold time, nor do weekends.

Not every dog is transferred into our partner rescue after the stray hold, some dogs are transferred into another reputable animal organization as a foster home may be available. After the stray hold time.

We will update the original post of the lost dog with information if the dog has not been redeemed during the stray hold period
