It’s about to hit 102 degrees here today so we thought it would be an appropriate time to cover this common question (don’t worry, all of our dogs are enjoying the recently upgraded air conditioning). ☀️

It’s no secret Golden Mountain Dogs enjoy in cool climates. But can they handle hot ones? 🥵

The short answer is yes. Read the slides above for our most common tips on how to deal with the summer heat in hot climates 🏜️

But don’t just take it from us. Pearl, the GMD in the first and last slide, is a 2 year old GMD from us that lives in the desert of Arizona. We asked Pearl’s dad Tom if he would share how he handles the summer heat. He was kind enough to share:

“Pearl has done just fine in the warmer weather. Of course she loved the winter, and few inches of snow that we had. We wanted to continue keeping her active year-round (lots of hiking in the cooler temps...) to burn off her puppy energy (which she still has... She’s quite attached to the several balls that she has in her toy box!) so we walk between 3 to 4 miles a couple times a week, and take her to the park the other days... But we do it early, before the heat sets in (5:30 a.m.). Then we take an evening short walk, up to our mailbox (she carries the mail home...)after sunset, about 7:30-8 p.m. We don’t go outside too much when it’s above 90 degrees, but sometimes she will go out and lay in the sun for several minutes. We keep three bowls around the house, filled with clean water and she keeps herself hydrated. The inside a/c is set between 76-78 and she’s acclimated quite well to the schedule. I’m sure we will be back on the trails once the heat breaks (can’t believe how many people have died in AZ and Utah this year, hiking in the extreme heat... ). I don’t see any reason this breed would have an issue in the warmer climates as long as the owners practice some common sense. She has done just fine being a black dog in the desert! Hope this helps...”

Lick the heat! 👅🔥 Boy am I glad we got all those improved AC’s installed this year.

1. Provide Plenty of Fresh Water: Ensure your dog has access to clean, cool water at all times. Consider placing multiple water bowls around your home and yard.

2. Create Shade: If your dog spends time outside, make sure there are shaded areas where they can escape the sun. Use umbrellas, canopies, or trees to provide natural shade.

3. Limit Exercise During Peak Heat: Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler.

4. Use Cooling Mats or Towels: Provide your dog with cooling mats or damp, cool towels to lie on. These can help lower their body temperature.

5. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car: Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can rise rapidly and become deadly. Always take your dog with you or leave them at home.

6. Provide a Kiddie Pool: A shallow kiddie pool filled with cool water can be a fun and effective way for your dog to cool off. Make sure the water is refreshed regularly. We actually use rubber livestock troughs which are a little more resilient.

7. Use Fans or Air Conditioning: If your dog is indoors, make sure they have access to fans or air-conditioned rooms. A cool, well-ventilated space can help them stay comfortable and prevent overheating.

Introducing the Active List! This is a portion of our waitlist that we will place members on that have shown they are proactively seeking a puppy.

❓Benefits❓

1. Ideally this will reduce wait times across the board. How much? It’s too soon to say. It won’t be a ton to start because we want to be fair to those on the waitlist that won’t see this information. But as time goes on we’re hoping it will have more of an effect.

2. This should increase communication. This includes allowing people to better idea of when they will be able to receive a puppy as they get farther through their wait.

❓How do you get added ❓

Just check in every 1-3 months. You’re welcome to use this as an opportunity to ask questions, but you can always just email us and say something as simple as, “Just checking in!”

If you message us on IG just please include the email address you signed up with.

There is no ideal frequency. The only advantage to more often is the closer you are to the timeline I have given you, the more accurate timing information I should be able to give you. This is because the reproductive process/timing is difficult to predict until you get closer.

We still won’t be able to make promises on specific litters because there are too many factors involved. But we should be able to give you a better idea than before.

Checking in more often won’t move you along faster. We want to streamline the process, not get spammed 😉.

❓What would remove me ❓

Don’t worry, we won’t remove you from the active list if you check in less frequently. However, if we do send you an adoption opportunity email and don’t receive a response we’ll go ahead and place you back on our standard waitlist (we won’t reset your wait time or anything either).

We COMPLETELY understand the importance of good timing and getting the puppy you truly want. So if you receive an adoption opportunity email and it’s not the best time or you don’t see the puppy you want, just reply and let us know you’d like to pass. We won’t remove you from the active list and you can pass as many times as you’d like and not lose your place.

Sunday on a Wednesday. We originally thought Sunday was a bicolor when she was born. It can be difficult to tell sometime. Eventually she had some brindle areas pop out!

If the color ends up being different while the puppy is with us, that is one condition in when we will refund a deposit. It doesn’t happen often, but no one has taken us up on the offer yet. Everyone falls too in love with their chosen puppy ❤️

We also won’t change the price on you if they end up being what is a higher priced color once you’ve made a deposit.

Realistically they’re all a collection of each in different amounts lol.

A typical photoshoot for us can take a few hours if you combine set up, sanitizing (every time), and the photos.

Photos require a lot of patience because those babies don’t know they need to sit still and/or show you their pretty selves.

Puppies are usually on the nervous side during photo shoots because they’re in a new(ish) setting away from mom and siblings. So we make sure we aren’t rushing them, while not taking too long ourselves, and comforting them as much as possible.

After you’ve made a deposit you’ll receive photos and a video once a week every week until you receive your puppy at 8 weeks old. In addition to the videos being taken in photoshoot settings we now make sure we include them in their natural setting with mom and siblings in our videos.

We are not professional photographers by any means but we’re always trying to improve!

We understand that everyone has a personal preference. While we haven’t been wrong yet at identifying radiant versus classic tricolors based on the features above it is always possible. If you placed a deposit wanting a specific type of tricolor and it turns out to not be the case as the puppy gets older this is one of the circumstances when we will return a deposit. You may also choose to transfer the deposit to a future litter.

We have the option of a flight nanny or ground delivery. However, it makes more sense for some people to either drive or fly to us to pick up their puppy. 🐶

If you do choose to fly into GJT we can certainly walk you through flying back with your puppy. We will also meet you at the airport or your hotel with the puppy so you don’t have to get a rental vehicle. 🛬🏨

If you need to pick up and go we totally understand. But if you want to make a trip of it there’s plenty to see and do near Grand Junction. Since we often get this question we thought we’d share with everyone some of what we recommend! 📸 👀

Palisade’s Wine Country 🍷🍇

Only 10 minutes away from the Grand Junction airport is the tiny town of Palisade. This town is home to the most well known vineyards and orchards in Colorado. There are 25 wineries with acres of vineyards.

Palisade’s Orchards and Fruit Stands 🍑🍒

The best peaches in the world come from Palisade. In spring you can catch the peach orchards blossoming, and summer through fall there are peaches for miles. There are many fruit stands around Palisade. You might even see some of our alpacas 🦙 at one of the fruit stand’s petting zoo! They have activities like horseback riding through the orchard or U-pick tours.

Palisade Tours 🐴 🚲

From late spring through early fall there are all kinds of tours around Palisade including horse carriage, pedicabs, bikes, a trolley, and more.

Colorado National Monument ⛰️🥾

Minutes outside of Grand Junction, this national park has some incredible rock formations. You can drive up the monument for some amazing views, or go hiking on the many hiking trails.

Grand Mesa 🏕️ ⛷️

This is the largest flat top mountain in the WORLD. You can see it from town, but it’s a 45 minutes away. It has hiking, fishing, and camping. In the winter Powderhorn Ski Resort is open.

Moab and Glenwood Springs 🌄🏊

If you’re driving in on I-70 you can stop by these locations. Moab is 2 hours west of Grand Junction and Glenwood Springs is 45 minutes east. Moab is infamous for its arches, other rock formations, and sand dunes. Glenwood has hot spring pools and the beautiful canyon.
