If you’ve ever read any of our posts, please read this one.

Sean reached out to us a few weeks ago to put down a deposit on a puppy. He was very excited to get a puppy for his wife Kaitlin. He chose the puppy they later named Mars. For weeks they went through the entire process with us, receiving updates, asking questions, and excitedly getting ready for the day Mars was going to go home with them.

This weekend was finally the time Sean and Kaitlin were going to take Mars home with them.

On Wednesday we received a call from Sean. He gave us the devastating news that he had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Sean was in good spirits. We were amazed with his bravery. He sounded optimistic and told us they were still interested in picking up Mars. He said they needed to go through with a doctor’s visit the next day to make sure it was the right choice.

We received an email on Thursday saying they were going to go through with picking up Mars.

Friday night we received a call from an unknown number. It was Kaitlin’s mom. She begged us to hold on to Mars for her daughter. She gave us the devastating news that Sean was in critical condition at the hospital. She told us her daughter was going to need the puppy to help her through this.

Sean passed away this weekend.

After making sure it was still the right decision, Kaitlin picked up Mars yesterday with her family. (Mars was donated).

Kaitlin’s mother sent us a letter written to Kaitlin by Sean about Mars. We included it above. It will make you cry, but it really does show what an amazing person Sean was.

“He has been perfect… he just crawls lap to lap for belly rubs. Then he runs back over to Kaitlin which just sit on the floor with him. It’s almost like he knows he has a job to do of comforting her and he’s right there.”

We don’t do a ton of themed photo shoots anymore. Our goal is more simple, timeless, frame-able photos. Something you can have and look back on forever. Our photography is a work I progress. Some are better than others 😬.

You might look at this and think, “What a beautiful tricolor!” But guess what? Griffin is a brindle. Brindles have the same brown, black, and white color as a tricolor. The brown patches are just… brindle instead of solid. Some brindles are very abstract in their pattern, but some, like Griffin, follow a more uniform pattern like a tricolor.

It’s no secret the wait for tricolors is no joke. It’s longer than ever. So if you like the colors on a tricolor consider adding brindles to your preferences.

Fun fact: A parent that does not have the genes to produce radiant tricolors will only produce classic tricolors and/or bicolors, OR brindles and/or bicolors. They will never produce tricolors and brindles, just one or the other. But a parent that does have the radiant tricolor genes can produce all 4 color variations in the same litter.

We aren’t perfect. We’ve made mistakes along the way. We’ve had tragedy and heartbreak. But we feel like we’ve gotten pretty dang good at this whole puppy raising thing. If you’ve run into problems never hesitate to reach out. If we can’t help we will do our best to get you pointed in the right direction.

The GMD community is SMALL. If a GMD is available from someone else and you’re considering going for it you won’t upset us. We know we won’t have enough for everyone that signs up. We’re okay with that. Our goal will never be to have as many puppies as possible.

There are some other GMD breeders out there we think do a GREAT job. But it’s not a long list. If you need help we’d be happy to get you pointed in the right direction with zero judgement.

(The puppy in the second side is experiencing challenges, but the owner was able to get it into the vet quickly today and we think he will be okay. The owner is frustrated, but is doing what’s best for their puppy and they will be the best thing that ever happened to it)

Responsible breeders know that two puppies at a time isn’t what’s best for the puppies and the pup-parents.

Littermate syndrome is a behavioral condition that can occur when two or more puppies from the same litter (or even unrelated puppies of similar ages) are raised together without enough individual socialization and training. Puppies with littermate syndrome often form an unhealthy bond with each other, leading to several issues, such as:

1. Over-dependence on each other: The puppies rely too much on each other for comfort and interaction, often leading to anxiety when they are separated.

2. Fearfulness: The puppies may become more fearful of new environments, people, and dogs because they primarily interact with each other.

3. Aggression: There can be increased sibling rivalry, which may escalate into aggressive behaviors.

4. Delayed development: The puppies may have delayed social, emotional, and cognitive development because they do not learn to interact with humans or other dogs in a healthy, independent way.
