Guess who's officially a parvo survivor! 💪🎉 Last week, we told you about Zeus, a brave puppy battling a life-threatening case of parvovirus. Yesterday afternoon, Zeus finally tested negative and is eager to start the rest of his life!

Many thanks to Animal ER of the Western Slope , Grand View Animal Hospital, and our fantastic animal care and vet teams for handling Zeus's life with such care. And, of course, to YOU – the amazing Jake's Fund donors who made it all possible! ❤ Zeus has one final hurdle to clear today – getting neutered. Wish him luck!

✨ To celebrate Zeus's recovery, will you make a donation to Jake's Fund to save even more medically fragile animals like him who will need our help in the future? Every dollar makes a difference! Visit rhhumanesociety.org/jakesfund. ✨

Please send all your love and well wishes to one of our newest and bravest little friends, Zeus. ❤️‍🩹 When Zeus came to us last week as a stray, it was immediately clear that he did not feel well. Zeus has spent this week bravely battling parvovirus – a life-threatening illness that's particularly dangerous for puppies.

With a bit of luck, love, and excellent care from the teams at Animal ER of the Western Slope and Grand View Animal Hospital, Zeus is slowly getting his spark back. His appetite has returned, and today, he was finally discharged from the hospital to continue care at Roice-Hurst! Zeus is not quite out of the woods yet, but we have high hopes for his future. We'll keep you updated!

If you donated to Jake's Fund on Colorado Gives Day, YOU enabled Zeus to receive the intensive medical care he needed this week. Thank you for being there for Zeus during the hardest moments of his life. If you'd like to contribute to Jake's Fund to help more pets like Zeus, please visit rhhumanesociety.org/jakesfund. ❤️

for Liquorice! 🐾 When Liquorice first arrived at Roice-Hurst, his sparkling purrsonality immediately captured the hearts of our team. Because of his friendly and outgoing nature, he even spent a few weeks as a roommate to the grumpiest cat in the shelter, helping her learn that humans aren't so scary after all!

Liquorice spent a total of 89 days in the shelter before he was finally adopted by his new mom, Bella, who sent us this heartwarming update:

"He is just what I wanted! I felt like I connected with him the most out of the other cats. He is super cuddly. It's been really enjoyable living with him. I couldn't have picked out a cat more perfect for me! He's so sweet and relaxing to be around. He's perfect because he's on the calmer side, but he's playful at the same time. He has a lot of toys and I just got him a cat tower today!"

Our longest resident, Chuck, had the best time playing and hiking in the snow with our wonderful volunteer, Elaine, last week! ❄

Chuck has spent more time waiting to be adopted than any other pet in the shelter, and he has high hopes for a fresh new beginning in the new year. Until he meets his match, he's grateful to have such amazing volunteer friends to make snow angels with!

Changes are underway for animal welfare and law enforcement agencies across Mesa County beginning January 1! Here's what you need to know:

Mesa County Animal Services will continue to shelter and care for our community's lost and found animals. However, animal law enforcement concerns, like stray animals, cruelty or neglect cases, and public nuisance complaints, will now be addressed by local law enforcement agencies within their respective jurisdictions.

If you find a stray animal anywhere within Mesa County and cannot locate their family, please call the non-emergency dispatch line at 970-242-6707 and the appropriate personnel will assist you.

Roice-Hurst Humane Society is a private nonprofit organization and cannot accept stray animals within Mesa County. As part of this restructuring, Mesa County has removed the county-owned MCAS courtesy stray kennels outside of our shelter. For now, please do not bring found stray animals to Roice-Hurst (except to scan for a microchip), as there is no longer a holding space for them. We will keep you updated if this changes in the future. We are working closely with Mesa County Animal Services and local law enforcement agencies to ensure that pets in our community remain safe and well cared for.

This is a significant change for many organizations and agencies in Mesa County, and your patience and constructive feedback is greatly appreciated as we all navigate this new system together with a shared goal of improving animal welfare across the valley. We are grateful to live in a community that cares so deeply for pets and their people!

Did you know that you can take Roice-Hurst shelter dogs for a hike? It's true! And they love it! 🤩

Last weekend, two of our amazing volunteers treated West and Zula to a hiking field trip, and the pups completely transformed outside of the shelter! Here's what our volunteer, Nicki, had to say about their hike:

"At the shelter, Zula barks at all the dogs and we have been told she doesn't get along with other dogs. At the shelter, West can be jumpy and mouthy. In the real world on a hike, Zula hiked beside West with no issues, and West was not mouthy at all! It is always so amazing to see how much these dogs' behaviors change when they are out of the shelter environment!"

Animal shelters are inherently stressful places full of unfamiliar smells, strange people, and loud noises. When volunteers (and fosters!) give dogs a break from shelter life, we learn so much more about their real personalities – and it's fun for everyone!

Roice-Hurst Humane Society

Roice-Hurst Humane Society is an animal shelter and adoption center that provides loving care for homeless dogs and cats and services to our community aimed at keeping pets in their loving homes. We never euthanize animals because of a lack of space or resources. All healthy, treatable, and adoptable animals are cared for until they are adopted – whether it take weeks, months, or longer.
