Did you know that you can take Roice-Hurst shelter dogs for a hike? It's true! And they love it! 🤩

Last weekend, two of our amazing volunteers treated West and Zula to a hiking field trip, and the pups completely transformed outside of the shelter! Here's what our volunteer, Nicki, had to say about their hike:

"At the shelter, Zula barks at all the dogs and we have been told she doesn't get along with other dogs. At the shelter, West can be jumpy and mouthy. In the real world on a hike, Zula hiked beside West with no issues, and West was not mouthy at all! It is always so amazing to see how much these dogs' behaviors change when they are out of the shelter environment!"

Animal shelters are inherently stressful places full of unfamiliar smells, strange people, and loud noises. When volunteers (and fosters!) give dogs a break from shelter life, we learn so much more about their real personalities – and it's fun for everyone!

Do you know me? 🐱 This handsome kitty was found in a carrier outside of our shelter. Because his identity is a mystery, he will be on a 5-day stray hold with us as authorized by Mesa County Animal Services, allowing his family time to find him if he is lost. If this is your missing kitty, please come to Roice-Hurst to bring him back home!

If you are the person who left this cat with us, whether he is a pet you can no longer care for or one you found, please give us a call at 970-434-7337 so we can learn more about him. If he is your pet and you'd like us to find him a new home, we would love to know his name, personality, history, and preferences to make the best match. If you're struggling with housing, finances, pet supplies, behavior issues, or another challenge that led to the decision to rehome him, we may be able to provide resources to support you and keep the two of you together. We're here to help!

Do you recognize this kitty? This girl was caught looking for a snack in our food shed this morning. Mesa County Animal Services has authorized her 5-day stray hold at our facility. If she is yours, please come to Roice-Hurst during our open hours of Tuesday-Sunday from 12-4pm with proof of ownership!

Today is , and is just one week away! 💝 Today, your gift to Roice-Hurst will help heal sick and injured shelter pets like Braille.

Remember Braille, the tiny, eyeless kitten who was found living outdoors at just five weeks old with an infection that destroyed his eyesight? His life changed when he landed safely at Roice-Hurst. Thanks to Jake's Fund donors, Braille received essential medical treatments and surgery to remove the damaged ocular tissue that remained. It's because of the generosity of this community that today, Braille is a spunky, loving, healthy kitty spending the holidays with his family! 🎄

Jake’s Fund is a special fund at Roice-Hurst that covers the cost of medical care for our most medically vulnerable shelter pets, and we need your help to replenish Jake's Fund for the pets who will need it in 2025.

We have some very brave kittens to introduce you to... meet Fabio, Rascal, Zorro, Emmy, Velvet, and Meredith (adopted)! 💪 These 11-week-old floofs just survived panleukopenia, a life-threatening virus that they battled for two weeks in our isolation room under the diligent care of our vet team. On Thursday, all six kittens tested negative and officially declared victory over this formidable illness! 🥳
