Happy Friday and part 2️⃣ of the 1️⃣2️⃣ steps of a COHAT! We hope you are ready to learn the next 3 steps…😎

4. Once fully under general anesthesia Dr. Ringen will place gauze in the back of your pet’s mouth (to prevent any fluids from being inhaled) and do a thorough chlorhexidine rinse. This rinse kills bacteria in the mouth. 🦠

5. Now that we are ready Dr. Ringen will do supragingival calculus removal or commonly known as tartar removal. Tartar is the extremely hard yellowish material found on your pet's teeth when dental plaque (the white gummy stuff) is not removed and hardens with 24-48hrs.🦷

6. The removal of tartar and plaque is done by scaling the teeth. Because lots of bacteria is found below the gumline Dr. Ringen will do subgingival scaling to target these difficult areas. This is especially important for the pets who have gingivitis, stomatitis, or kissing lesions.🔺

Unlike us taking a holiday a couple days ago, parasites unfortunately do not! We still are experiencing warm temperatures so please give your pets their monthly preventatives. Fleas, ticks, and mosquitos carry nasty diseases, and we do want your pet to contract them. 🛑

We are excited for another month with all of you. Stay tuned for more exciting information coming soon!🔈

We love when it is Friday, and we love getting to discuss new information with all of you! Today we will be talking about the first 3 steps that go into a COHAT. 🦷

1️⃣. Whether you're bringing your pet in for their annual exam or if you have noticed your pet painful in their mouth, a full head to toe exam will be done. If allowed by your animal, checking the inside of their mouth is crucial to observe the status of their teeth and check for any abnormalities like lesions or masses. Discussion with your veterinarian will occur, going over medical and dental history and any at home oral care.✏️

2️⃣. Once the decision of COHAT treatment is made, the first thing done is lab work and ECG. This is to make sure your pet is as healthy as they can be in order to go under general anesthesia. If all looks good then that is the final green light for a COHAT🟢

3️⃣. The day of COHAT your pet will be going under general anesthesia. They will be fasted and ready for their COHAT. In order to get them sedated they will undergo preanesthetic medications, and then will have the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. A veterinary technician will be monitoring your pet during the entire duration of the COHAT. Vitals will be observed and recorded.🧐

Can you guess what is in the container? 🧐

If you said ticks, then you are correct! 🤢 A few weeks ago, a client brought in her dog who was shaking and scratching at her ears. After Dr. Fromm did an ear exam; these nasty little buggers were found moving around in the dog's ear canal. In order to get them removed the dog was sedated and the ticks were pulled out one by one. The dog made a speedy recovery.😊

You may be thinking that this is normal for a dog in the mountains or one running around freely, but this dog lives here in the valley and has not left recently. This means that she had picked up these ticks right here in the backyard.‼️ As a responsible pet owner please, please, please get your dog (and cat) on flea and tick preventatives as well as their heartworm preventative. Ticks are becoming more and more prevalent, and we are seeing a steady increase in tickborne diseases.📈

We know we have been posting a lot about dentals🦷 with West Slope Veterinary Dentistry & Oral Surgery, that is because our clinic and Dr. Ringen believes that oral care in pets is crucial for their overall health and wellbeing. Most people believe animals are “supposed” to have bad breath, but this is simply not the case. 🚩

Board-certified veterinary dentist, Dr. Ringen has graciously shared with us all the steps that go into COHAT’s and we feel that it is important enough to share with all of you!🔈

Over the next month we will discuss each of these steps, so you as a client can truly understand what all goes into COHATS and why they are so important for your animal. We have loved working with the WSVDOS team and we can’t wait for you all to be as excited to learn more.🤩

The ‘dog-days-of-summer’🐶 are slowly coming to an end, but that does not mean preventative care should be stopped. Keeping your pets up to date on their vaccines and flea/tick/heartworm prevention will only keep them healthy and live a longer life. Parasites don’t stop or hold on for just anybody! 🦟

There has been a recent influx of pets becoming lost and owners trying to find them...😭

It is important to keep proper identification on your animal at all times if possible. Make sure your pet’s identification is up to date and has your correct information on it. Meanwhile, you should also get your pet microchipped in case their collar and tags fall off. 💙

Losing a pet can be a very stressful time, but being able to rest easy knowing they have your information on them at all times should take a bit of the stress off.🥵

We know that you hear us stating over and over about bringing your dogs and cats in for their annual exam and vaccines, but that is because we just care about the overall wellbeing of your pets and want them to live a long life!😻

At our practice, we tend to see more dogs than cats on a given day. In 2021, research showed that 82% of the population of dogs visited the vet where only 40% of the cat population visited. These numbers are alarming considering cats are known to hide their pain often when they are feeling unwell. 📉

We understand that getting a cat into a carrier, listening to them howl in the vehicle, and watching them get a physical exam can be stressful for both owners and pets alike. But that is why we are here to help! There are different options that can help ‘take the edge’ off for your cat. 😊

We truly just want what's best for the overall being of your animal. Getting your pets in for annual exams, vaccines, and lab work is the first step to being proactive for your cat and letting them live long happy lives.💙
