Introducing Moab’s newest Taxidermist, Charley Every. However Charley says he only wants to learn this new adventure as a hobby, mounting his own specimens and a few of his buddies’ trophies. He stays very busy as a successful builder but always wanted to learn the Art of Taxidermy. As you can see from his mounts he really has an eye for this craft. Congratulations Charley!

Super busy around here. 6 elk mounted up and drying fills up the mounting shop. Just enough room to mount the Buffalo and Desert Bighorn Sheep. Charley Every from Moab is in the last week of his taxidermy course. He’s mounted 3 deer and this elk that he and Dave are working on. We’ll show you his completed mounts in a week or so.

Check out the tine length on this bruiser. Jayden Stoddard had no idea what a nice Muley he shot until he brought it to me and I explained how the Boone and Crockett scoring system worked. I told Jayden that it would gross score over 195. After deductions it should easily net 180 (which would place his deer in the Boone and Crockett Awards Record Book) Sho’ nough, after the mandatory 60 day drying process it officially scored 180. Jayden chose the wall pedestal mount with habitat to show off his trophy deer.

If I deliver and hang taxidermy mounts for you, you must be very special customers. In this case I was happy to do just that for Clyde and Angie Huber on Glade Park. I’ve been doing taxidermy for them for over 30 years. After hanging these 2 Canadian moose we set down to moose steaks fresh off the grill. In appreciation they sent me home with a big Ole’ bottle of whiskey….. They know me well!

We got the Grand Slam of Sheep here plus a few extras. What are the 4 Sheep that make up the Grand Slam?…. Rocky Mtn Bighorn, Desert Bighorn, Dall Sheep, and Stone Sheep. Sheep hunters are a different breed. Acquiring all 4 can be a very expensive process. Some of these sheep hunts can cost $40,000 to $60,000 dollars and up, and there’s no guarantee you’ll get one. Darryl and Halle adjust and cut the skull plate to fit this Lifesize Rocky Mtn Bighorn

These are the last deer from the year 2022. Yes they have waited very patiently. We still have a few animals from 2022 to complete but are currently working on 2023 critters. Tina Weber was very excited to get her deer back as was Rick Wright, Joe Stegeman, and Bill Votruba with their big 3rd and 4th season bucks.

Your thoughts….. ears forward or ears back. As a taxidermist I always ask the customer which way they want the head turned. But no-one mentions the position of the ears. I determine ear position by the configuration of the antlers. What I’m trying to do is frame the antlers and show them off. I probably mount ears back 75% of the time…. I just like that look.

Some recent critters picked up and taken to their new home. Kyle Goddard with his huge British Columbia mountain goat. Klint York holding his son Trace’s antelope. (Yes he got yelled at for grabbing the antelope by the throat after I showed him how to handle and hang the mount). Ryan Smith and his hunting buddy with Ryan’s big Colorado mountain goat. (And they’re drinking my beer). Bob Foss and his homies with his nice 6x6 elk. Everybody waited over 2 years to get their mounts back. Hate running this far behind but we are starting to mount up some 2023 animals, usually some young kids with their first big game animal. And of course some boys from Kentucky that promised me some Kentucky Bourbon.

This shop is getting filled up with a variety of critters in various stages of the mounting process. Halle adjusts and pins foam to show the muscle detail of the moose we mounted yesterday….. then it’s on to the next moose.

I’m cracking the whip around here! Everybody got a raise January 1st and I’m making sure I’m getting my money’s worth. Seems like everybody’s working…. Dave’s staining antlers and getting them ready to mount. Keely’s prepping a deer cape for mounting, Halle’s sewing up the next deer in line. I’m kinda working, gluing horns on buffalo skulls. Dave’s been here 12 years and got the biggest raise…. Almost making 4 dollars an hour now… go Dave, you’re the man!

WOW! AMAZING! A high school Physical Education teacher and beach boy from Virginia with a dream of moving out west and starting a Taxidermy business. Obviously a dream come true! Getting ready to start my 38th year in business. Love what I do but need to start slowing things down, I find myself working 7 days a week year-round. Hate running 18 months to 2 years out. I met most of my deadlines to get some mounts completed for Christmas and the first of the year. My dentist Scott Stoddard stopped in to pick up a few of the trophies from his and son Jayden’s African Safari. A blue wildebeest, black wildebeest, and a red lechwe. A big happy new year to all my customers!

Obviously I’ve been a good boy this year. Anytime Santa drops by to visit before Christmas, you’ve been nice, not naughty (which is unusual for me). Actually Santa owed me some money towards his deer mount…. Not a Reindeer…. But a mule deer. Anyway… a Very Merry Christmas from Darryl and the crew at Darryl’s Taxidermy to all of you and yours! Santa played by my customer Robert Manuppella (who is actually a Santa for hire around town).

Happy hunters picking up their European skull mounts. Around here Dave is known as the European guy, not because he’s European, but because he’s in charge of doing all the skull mounts. We got in over 150 this year, and to have all of these done before Christmas was quite the feat! Everybody give Dave a big Atta-Boy!…..Not really. Don’t fill up my comment section, he’s not that awesome !

Santa called and said he was short a couple of reindeer this year and did I have any extras. I told him no but he could borrow a couple of Big Mtn Goats. The Billy on the left was taken in British Columbia by Kyle Goddard of Palisade, Colo. The Billy laying down is a Colorado Mtn Goat taken by Ryan Smith of Fruita, Colo.

“4 year anniversary”. 4 years ago today Halle came into my life. A little 14 year old kid told her mom and dad she wanted to try taxidermy. Being homeschooled and extremely intelligent she was quite bored. She needed that artistic challenge and mom and dad were all for it. I have been very blessed with her presence here and have enjoyed watching her turn into an extraordinary taxidermist. Maybe one day she’ll take over the business…. She is certainly capable. In the meantime she still doesn’t talk very much….. but she does have to work with 2 old guys. (She forgets that we were young too a long time ago.)
