Hunting season is over! Hallelujah!! We can finally get back to work and finish up all these mounts from 2022. It was a perfect amount of critters brought in this year and with not accepting bears for rugs anymore we will definitely start getting caught up. Here’s a few successful hunters from last week. Proud dad Freddie Chavez and 15 year old daughter Kendall with her big buck. Martin Menart with a nice 180 class buck and Mike Harmeling with his Grand Mesa buck. Although the regular seasons are over, we will continue to get animals in such as Buffalo, mountain lions, bobcats, and exotic critters. Thanks for all the birthday wishes!

BIRTHDAYS!……. I’m so over ‘em. My mind feels like it did 35 years ago (at least I think it does). My body on the other hand does not feel like that…. It feels like 67 years old. The good news is, I still got a 6-pack… it’s just in a different location now!

All “hands on deck” around here. The one thing we get done really quick here are European skull mounts. They get immediate attention and are completed in a matter of weeks. These are some of the 2nd and 3rd season deer and elk. I hired Keely back to work a couple days a week, (she worked here 4 years ago and is a really good sewer). I have Halle so busy around here doing the mounting she needed her own assistant. Apparently they turned Dave into their errand boy as they sent him to get subway.

More successful hunters. All animals were taken in Colorado at their “Secret Hunting Spot”. Lance Shufelburger and his hunting buddies with his big 8x8 elk. Robert Manuppella with his 30” 3x3 buck. Travis Christensen with his 190” mule deer. Bruce Penny dropped by to pick up his 6x6 archery bull and drop off this huge 8x9 elk found dead on his property during September archery season.

Third season weather conditions have been perfect. Hunters are reporting seeing plenty of deer. The snow storm has pushed the big bucks to lower elevations and they are really chasing the does around. The Bake family (Matt, Reagan, and son Grayson) from Washington state, filled-up opening morning. Michelle Redd and her mother Rose teamed up to get their deer on the Grand Mesa. Eric Wacker shot this 31” muley on his property on Glade Park.

I always make time for my clients and special friends when they stop by. In this case Dana Hollinger, (the world renowned trophy mule deer antler collector) is in Colorado to hunt mule deer. He is throwing all sorts of cash my way trying to buy some of my record book mule deer. I’m getting close to that point where one day I’ll sell the whole collection and retire…… just not yet, but I’m listening to offers.

Darryl and Dave working on European skulls. We’re giving the once-over and the finishing touches on September elk and 1st season rifle elk. The wait time on skulls is usually just a matter of weeks. Shoulder mounts on the other hand is a different story…. We’re easily 18 months to 2 years out!

It just might be the New World Record Typical Mule Deer. This is a well known deer among antler collectors. I first saw it over 25 years ago at a Sport show. It has been scored before but the antlers will need to be X-rayed and re-scored by a panel of judges. Then it will be entered in the record book by the new owner depending on the final score and potentially being the new world record. All I’m going to say is that it’s a Colorado deer. I won’t be answering questions from comments on Facebook as I expect to get bombarded with questions.….. just watch in the future as I’m sure it will be an internet sensation.

All my customers have been very patient. Everyone has waited 2 years to get their trophies back. Deckun Summer and his dad Nathan from Gunnison showed up to pick up Deckun’s trophy bear. Steve and Dana Gander from Wisconsin picked up their Pedestal elk and European elk. They left us with 2 more elk… they are very successful hunters. Floyd Martinez is all smiles after seeing his 6x6 elk. Darryl and Halle Groom a couple of elk getting picked up by some hunting buddies from Minnesota.

Happy hunters with their trophies. Mark Miller with his Colorado muzzle-loading moose. Justin Eller and his proud dad with Justin’s moose. David Donohue and his hunting buddy Dave with David’s hard earned elk. It took over 30 years to draw the ranching-for-wildlife tag. David suffered a stroke a few years ago and lost the use of the right side of his body. He had to learn to shoot left handed so he was ready if he ever drew the very rare tag. Ryan Biggs and his dad Daren with Ryan’s 6x6 elk taken on unit 61.

Some happy hunters picking up their trophies after waiting almost 2 years. Elizabeth Filener was about 9 months pregnant when she shot her deer. Now she brings her 2 year old son to pick up mom’s deer. Jacob Krol drove from California to pick up his 2022 deer mount and shows off his 2023 deer antlers that we will be mounting for him in the future. Joe Combs stopped in to pick up his 2022 deer mount and while here bought this buffalo skull to give to his daughter. Nicole Browne is all smiles after picking up her first deer she’s ever harvested.

Two big ole’ Bulls to be picked up. The bull on the left is mounted on the standard 90 degree sharp turn. The bull on the right is on a standard 90 degree turn with an alteration (tilting the head upwards). The client said “mount it the way you would if it was yours” so we turned it to show off the best side and changed the angle of the head so that he’s sniffing the wind… looking for the cow elk in heat.

Some nice trophies from the past few days. Jordan Welch and his dad Jeff with Jordan’s Grand Mesa moose, taken with his muzzle-loader opening morning. Blair Collins with a nice mountain goat. Gradon Miller with his 30 inch non-typical Archery mule deer. Reed Bumgarner and another big archery 6 point bull. Reed has taken more giant bulls with his bow than anyone I know.

Halle puts the finishing touches on a couple of Mt. Goats ready to be picked up. She looks really serious, or is she angry because I haven’t fed the employees yet. 37 years in business and I have provided lunch for my employees every day, whether it’s ordering pizza, doing carry-out, going out to eat, or most of the time I’m cooking in the kitchen. They’re worth it….cause my employees are my family!

This is the time of the year where we really start getting behind schedule. I get pulled away from helping Halle with mounting duties to help Dave with keeping up with all the critters being brought in. We still have bear rugs from September 2022 to complete. Have a few life-size mountain goats and sheep left from 2022. Completed all deer, elk, and antelope from September 2022. Currently working on October 2022 Deer and elk. REMEMBER we are not accepting bears for rugs this year. We turned down half a dozen this spring and 6 already today.
