Quite the makeover on this big 6x6 Bull Elk. However, when it was brought in it was really broken up. The orange tape shows where the antlers were broke off, basically a 6x3 with two points broken on the other 6 point side. Kentucky hunter Rick Pine knew I was the man to fix it up as we’ve fixed many broken antlers for his hunting buddies. When these Elk are rutting and fighting other bulls for dominance they sure can break up their antlers. When we fix antlers we use real antler not cast resin antlers. Dave holds a couple of antlers that we “borrowed” antler points from to fix this one. 90% of hunters (including myself) would fix antlers as opposed to leaving them broken.

A really cool mount. A Dall Sheep (taken in Alaska) and a Stone Sheep (taken in British Columbia) in separate years by Kyle Goddard of Palisade, Colorado. Kyle wanted a double pedestal mount for the sheep…. Easier said than done! In the Taxidermy world there aren’t always a lot of forms that fit a particular animal in the pose the client wants. We aim to please, so we altered standard shoulder mounts into pedestal mounts by adding the scalloped back to the back of the form and drilled our own hole in the brisket area for placement on the rock base. We then covered the exposed back with leather. I know it’s tough to focus on the sheep with that background of awesomeness on the walls!

Happy Labor Day everyone! All the employees have the day off so I’ll be hanging around tending to some of the critters we mounted this week including this big Shiras Moose that Halle mounted on Friday.

The new Rack Cards are out! Slight increase from last year’s prices (won’t even cover the increased prices us Taxidermists are dealing with). A couple of announcements… not taking in any bears any more (maybe an occasional lifesize) not taking in deer in velvet this year, and we will definitely be limiting the amount of work we take in. 38 years in business and we’re running the farthest behind we’ve ever been. I would like to retire in a few years and just sell taxidermy and rustic decor.

Darryl and Charley delivered some critters up to the Kentucky boys’ beautiful lodge on Glade Park. The truck was loaded up so we’ll bring some more trophies next week.

Hunting season is right around the corner and we’re getting things mounted and out the door. We really start to get behind once the season starts. It’s all we can do to keep up with what comes in….. and that’s with 3-5 employees year round. Some of our happy hunters are Megan Sherman and her guide Owen Taylor, Lane Peterson and Cadance with Lane’s big buck, Justin Geiger and his nice archery bear, and Dave Hartmann with a wolf skull he found while on his Yukon moose hunt.

What a fun time the last few days have been with my huge yard sale. Made a couple thousand dollars! (Unless I.R.S. is watching…. then I only made $17.53). I’m a wheeler-dealer, I can sell white gloves to a person eating bar-b-que. Sold some antlers, buffalo skulls, shoulder mounts, log furniture and lots of Knick-knacks. I even sold 6 year old Sloan a wild turkey Bourbon bar sign and a turtle shell. Met lots of new folks, some of them got a tour of the 2 man caves. Now they know where to come for future rustic decor and man cave items.

Rangely, Colorado residents Andrew Lloyd and wife Melissa, and Mike Dunne and wife Melody came out to pick up their elk and deer. While they were here they got into some of my yard sale items. I’ll be having a huge yard sale this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Lots of antlers, skulls and rustic decor, over 30 shoulder mounts and of course hunting items. Look for add in The Nickel and Daily Sentinel.

No, we didn’t spill bleach on this elk. This elk, taken by Bart Paulsen in Utah, would be considered a Piebald. Piebald condition results from an inherited genetic trait. Piebalds characteristically have varying amount of white hair in their coats, ranging from slight amounts (like this elk) to an almost totally white coat.

When the Sheriff patrol car pulled in I thought for sure Halle was getting in trouble again! But it was our very own Mesa County Deputy Sheriff, Rich Tafoya stopping by after work to pick up his huge Desert Bighorn sheep. CPW aged this ram at over 10 years old. It’s face is very scared up and horns broomed off from many years of fighting and butting heads with other rams.

Last couple of pictures of Man Cave #2. No more room for shoulder mounts but have some space for pictures and cool decor. Some aspen trim around doors and baseboards and we’re done. Then I can start dreaming about the future Man Cave #3!

As promised…. Here’s a couple of walls of some huge elk I own that are on display in Man Cave #2.
