The deeper I go, the farther away I feel—while simultaneously feeling more connected than ever. It’s a strange paradox, one I hesitate even to put into words because I’m not sure how. This feeling has been growing inside me with each passing year. I find myself detached from most people, yet at the same time, I’ve never felt more in tune with everything....

As I sit down to write, it's almost inevitable that my four-year-old son will start causing a ruckus. I could have an underground bunker, and he would still find a way to create a ridiculous amount of chaotic distractions. When it comes to horsemanship, I have no problem working around distractions because I hyper-focus on the horse’s mind, body, and spirit....

The Pursuit of Harmony Harmony is what we all seek, yet few truly attain. Life is challenging enough on its own, and when you add horsemanship into the mix, it becomes damn near impossible. Horsemanship requires years of dedication just to reach a level of proficiency where we are at least staying out of the horse’s way. Eventually, timing becomes second nature....

Now for my favorite side of exposure—using the input of energy to create particular forms of thinking. At this phase, the horse responds to specific types of movements without fear of unknown or known stimuli, within reason, based on its level of understanding at that time. The horse has also clearly distinguished between meaningless stimuli and meaningful offerings. At this point, it should be very clear to the horse: if we apply a stimulus, we get more effort in return—willingly and in a relaxed frame of mind throughout the entire process....

Separation: Any time we are working on exposure, we are also working toward connecting the whole horse in balance to different movements. At this phase, we are teaching the horse separation of energy through desired movements based on offerings and driving forces. In groundwork—let’s say on the halter with a flag and body position—or under saddle with your leg and body position, the body position is the offering, and the leg/flag are the driving sources....

When it comes to exposing a horse to pressure, I think of it as a threefold process. The three versions of exposure come down to the unknown, separation, and thought. If done correctly, we are preparing the horse to succeed in any scenario, in any environment, given those conditions are conducive to a horse. This shows the horse that they can indeed put their trust and confidence in us....

Mind, Exposure, Harmony: Part 1 When working with horses, I find myself going through three phases upfront: first tapping into the horse’s mind, then exposing it to stimulus, and finally rounding it all out into a place of harmony. Sounds easy enough in words, right? But let me tell you — in practice, this process is all over the board, based on two factors....

This subject really has me thinking tirelessly on a daily basis. Looking back at my life and getting to know the depth of others’ lives, it seems to boil down to a person’s vision, drive, and passion toward the future. From there, a life could be dissected into a series of choices made around timing and opportunities. Sometimes these choices are deliberate; other times, we are just passengers in which the choice was made for us....

I was informed that my blogs have been perceived as offensive to some, so I figured it’s best to state why I’m blogging in the first place. The whole point of this blog, for me, is to hopefully connect with others in a positive light by reflecting on my life through my own perspective. Probably the most important part of writing for me is to get better at putting my thoughts into words—both written and spoken....

Have you ever noticed that people who go to some sort of therapy often adopt a new language, but nothing else changes? Therapy came to mind because that was my first encounter with the syndrome of falsified belief of change. While these people think they have changed, their actions in life often say otherwise — yet they develop this new ability to speak a complex, specialized lingo to convince everyone, including themselves, that they’ve actually transformed....

Opening the Door to Horsemanship True horsemanship isn’t just about riding—it’s about dedication, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of mastery. But for many, the barriers to entry are steep. Time, variety, and money often stand in the way. How do we change that? Something I work very hard at is creating opportunities for people to progress in their horsemanship. Too often, I see barns set up solely for competition or profit, leaving horsemanship in a grittier, gray area....

This post originates from a recent experience I had at a local restaurant. I sat at the bar, that was not busy, in a restaurant that was also not busy. The summation of the whole experience, I had to ask for everything start to finish. I had to ask for a drink, ask for a menu, ask if I could order food, ask for the check, literally everything....
