One of the things I am most grateful for in life is what I think of as our Cohesive Family Unit (CFU). I find it funny, considering that in high school, I couldn’t wait to get away from them—though it was more about leaving the small town I was raised in than escaping my family. When I think about the most difficult aspects of horsemanship, it all comes down to three things: the location, timing, and fluctuation of the hands. While understanding leg cues is fairly straightforward once you grasp the concept, getting a horse truly alive to them with understanding is another challenge entirely. Of course, there’s the inevitable task of combining both the legs and hands, which can feel complex at first, but as you progress, it becomes second nature....

I’ve always been of the mindset: buy in now, figure out how to cash flow it later. Pay to play! It’s officially been about two weeks now since I was completely wiped out—first by norovirus, followed immediately by flu B. We had some friends fly in from abroad, and they brought both into the household. As I told them, you aren’t truly family until you’ve been sick together. Now, here I am, trying to get back into the swing of things after what I can only hope was my full-body cleanse for the year—hopefully for many years....
