‼️ 🦷 DID YOU KNOW that by the time your pet is 3 years old, he or she will very likely have some early evidence of periodontal disease??!!🦷‼️

This will worsen as your pet grows older if effective preventive measures aren’t taken.

Causes of pet dental problems: 🦷

Although cavities are less common in pets than in people, they can have many of the same dental problems that people can develop:

➡️Broken teeth and roots
➡️Periodontal disease
➡️Abscesses or infected teeth
➡️Cysts or tumors in the mouth
➡️Malocclusion, or misalignment of the teeth and bite
➡️Broken (fractured) jaw
➡️Palate defects (such as cleft palate)

These and other hidden items can generally be detected early during your pets annual exam! 🥼

🌹 Today, Feb. 3, 2025 is National Doggie Date Night! 🐕

Showering your pet with affection and attention will make them much happier than any gift you can wrap up with a bow. 💕
However we wanted to take the opportunity to share a few food options to always avoid. 🚫

7 Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Dog

☑️ Xylitol-containing products (xylitol is an artificial sweetener often found in sugar-free candy and gum);
☑️ Chocolate (although some types of chocolate are not as toxic as others, it’s safer to keep your pet away from all types of chocolate)
☑️ Onions
☑️ Grapes and raisins
☑️ Fatty and fried foods
☑️ Macadamia nuts
☑️ Avocados

Sidewalks and Ice Melts ~
🧊❄️🐾

Here in Michigan, ice melt is a necessity during the winter months.

It keeps sidewalks clear, driveways and parking lots ice-free, and ensures that roads are safe for driving.
However, while ice melts can be essential, not all types are safe to use around animals.
Some are highly toxic 🚨when ingested, while others cause irritation to your pet’s paws, skin, and/or mucous membranes.

Before taking your four-legged friend walking outdoors…
☑️ have preparation ready to clean off their paws when returning indoors.
☑️ if outside unattended, make sure your pet doesn’t have opportunity to ingest the salt by eating directly or locking their paws.
🚨Most common ice melts contain sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride—all of which are highly toxic to dogs if ingested.
☎️ if you have any concerns you may call our practice or the Pet Poison Hotline 1-855-764-7661

❄️DO NOT COUNT ON THE COLD TO KILL PARASITES! 🪱 🚨

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), cold weather can make pets vulnerable to internal parasites. Parasites can survive cold winters and may even seek warmth indoors.

💊 Regular medication:
Give your pet preventative medications regularly and year round.
💩 Clean yard:

🥼 Early veterinary care:

Is checked annually.

❄️Our sweet friend. “Nora” is here to say, even though the snow is SO MUCH FUN for some of our furry friends, here are a few safety precautions to keep in mind:
💙Check the paws: Check your dog’s paws frequently for signs of cold-weather injury or damage, such as cracked or bleeding paw pads. During a walk, a sudden lameness may be due to an injury or may be due to ice accumulation between his/her toes. You may be able to reduce the chance of iceball accumulation by clipping the hair between your dog’s toes.
💙Play dress-up: If your dog has a short coat or seems bothered by the cold weather, consider a sweater or dog coat. Have several on hand, so you can use a dry sweater or coat each time your dog goes outside. Wet sweaters or coats can actually make your dog colder. Some pet owners also use booties to protect their dog’s feet; if you choose to use them, make sure they fit properly.
💙Wipe down: During walks, your dog’s feet, legs and belly may pick up de-icing products, antifreeze, or other chemicals that could be toxic. When you get back inside, wipe down (or wash) your pet’s feet, legs and belly to remove these chemicals and reduce the risk that your dog will be poisoned after (s)he licks them off of his/her feet or fur. Consider using pet-safe de-icers on your property to protect your pets and the others in your neighborhood.
