Did you know that the second Saturday of May has been declared by FEMA as National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day?
An individual family’s emergency plan is just that: one plan for one family. Emergency kits should include all family and pet needs, such as dietary restrictions and any needed medications. Keep all important documents such as personal identification (passports, birth certificates, social security cards), medical records, (for pets: vaccinations, microchip information, vet, and emergency contacts), and any prescriptions in an easy to access place in the event you must leave your home with short notice. Consider keeping digital records of documents.
Start moving your animals when a severe weather watch is issued. If you can’t move animals because they are in tanks or cages, cover them with blankets. It is better for your animals to be confined before any severe weather hits than to scramble in the minutes after a warning has been issued.
Have a carrier or crate for each pet. Assign your pets to individual household members. Plan and practice how to catch your nervous or shy animals. Practice familiarizing your pet with their carriers and crates so there’s less anxiety. Make a routine and offer high value rewards. Ensure all carriers or crates are in good condition. If there is damage, replace the carrier. Losing a pet during an emergency because of a broken door or cracked side is a preventable tragedy.
Enroll your family in Smart911. The Rave Alert system allows Clinton County to communicate with our residents before, during, and after an emergency.
