This week's pet of the week is very special to us because her new owners were the best! Chiquiz was a stray pup in a neighborhood who ended up pregnant. When her soon-to-be new owner's saw her in distress trying to deliver her puppies, they brought her in for an evaluation and we were able to perform an emergency c-section saving 2 of the 3 puppies. Chiquiz found the best owners because they thankfully were able to move forward with the procedure. We understand that not every person is able to do this financially (especially without being able to prepare for it!) but we thought these owner's deserved a special shout out for being great Samaritans and reminding us that this world is filled with wonderful people! So thank you for being a hero to Chiquiz and her puppies!

Meet Liberty- one of the cutest little bullies we got the pleasure of seeing! Liberty originally came to us just a few days after being brought home for vomiting- turns out she just likes to eat so fast she gets an upset tummy! Thankfully, a slow feeder bowl helped stop these vomit episodes and when she came back 1 week later for vaccines she was feeling great! She is 5 months old and weighs over 17 pounds! She loves to chase ball but already gets jealous of mom (apparently she is a huge daddy's girl!)
She drives her pet parents crazy by making a huge mess with her water!
We are so excited to be a part of her care team and can't wait to see how awesome of a companion she becomes for her family!

Happy Sunday all!!
I wanted to share this feel good story from another clinic; senior pets and pain management is something I'm very passionate about after living with senior pups for 4 years with mobility concerns.
Remember pets age faster than we do, so your senior pet that is slowing down may need some pain relief- and we have plenty of options to choose from (less for our cat friends but we still have a few great ones!)
Pets don't show pain like we do, so if you have an older pet at home that is slowing down, gives us a call to get them evaluated and we can give them the gift of pain relief this holiday season!

This senior dog was having a lot of mobility issues and could barely get around. Our doctors started him on some medications for pain and an anti-inflammatory so that he was able to return home, and he had a very positive response. We are so thankful we could improve his quality of life and give his owners more time with him!

We want everyone to meet our new clinic hamster! She likes to keep her cheeks full of food so she has been affectionately named Fatty!
She has been with us for a few weeks and she enjoys rolling around in her ball. If you hear us in the back saying things like "watch out, dont kick fatty!" It's because she is getting some much needed exercise in that ball!
Hamsters make great pets for families, kids, and clinic staff members (HAHA!!). If you are considering getting a hamster as a family pet, please reach out and we can provide you with some basic care information so you can make the best decision!

Pet of the Week is this cutie! Say hello to Happy Pappi!! He visited recently looking dapper in his plaid jacket!
He is a 13yr old mixed terrier that was adopted from a shelter. This old man is loving his golden years relaxing in the sun! After all these years he still has his favorite stuffed animal that he cannot sleep without!
We just love having this older pups visit with us- bringing them in for annual to biannual visits can help us give them the best quality of life possible! We hope Happy Pappi continues to relax in the sun for many years!

Let's take a few minutes to talk about the importance of planning ahead if your pet becomes pregnant.- I'll apologize ahead of time for this lengthy post!
Dogs and cats usually are pretty good at being able to safely deliver their babies without help. However, a dystocia, aka a difficult birth, can occur with any breed or species. Certain breeds are at extremely high risk, such as french bulldogs and english bulldogs, and generally should have a c-section scheduled ahead of time. Unfortunately, even the best laid plans can go awry!
This adorable frenchie came to us as a new patient and in distress with a puppy stuck. Her owners had the best intentions for this girl because they had a c-section scheduled for the very next day at their primary veterinarian! But with a recent move, that veterinarian was now over an hour away and it would have been risky for Star and the pups had they driven her that far for the surgery. None of the staff hesitated to make sure she was given the best care and rushed to surgery to save momma and her puppies.
Just like with humans, there is not a set number of days for pregnancy (also known as the gestation length). On average, the gestation for dogs and cats is 62 days +/- 5 days. Since this length is short in comparison to other mammals, a large part of development is still occurring at the end and scheduling a c-section even 1 day too early leads to a higher risk of puppy loss.
If you are planning on breeding your dog, we recommend consulting with a reproductive specialist as it is very important for certain breeds to be tested for genetic concerns, such as hip dysplasia, thyroid function, eye disease, heart disease, etc, prior to breeding. They can also help determine the best days to have your pet bred and what day to plan a c-section if needed.
If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out to us to have your pet evaluated- having a client-patient-doctor relationship is so important prior to an emergency!

Give a big warm hello to Chucho, who is an adorable 7 year old chihuahua! His owner acquired him from a friend, and even though he looks nervous visiting with us, we think he landed in the perfect home for him! His favorite activities are to eat and sleep (can anyone relate??). His owner says that he loves to dress up- he does look quite dapper in his outfit don't you think?- and he loves to cuddle! Chucho sounds like the perfect companion!! He came to visit us for his annual vaccines but he was also having some eye troubles! With a couple medications home and should be better in no time!

We couldn't pick just one picture of this cutie! Meet Simba! He is 13 weeks old and loves to play with spring toys but he is not the biggest fan of dogs! His owner just loves him to pieces, except when he tries to jump into the fridge! He was too cute playing with the table mat during his photo shoot, we just had to share all of them!

Pet of the Week goes to Spaghetti!!! She is a 2 year old mix who came in for annual examination and vaccines a few weeks ago- we could not get over her name! She weighs a healthy 10.6 pounds and loves to chew on her mom's belongings (never her dad's!). She is not a fan of loud noises though she loves to bark for no reason which drives her pet parents CrAzY!!! It was such a pleasure to see her and we hope to be a part of her care for many years!!

I would like to talk about aggression in the vet clinic briefly. When we have a patient that seems "kinda iffy", we really want to figure out what is the best way to handle that individual to make them as less stressed as possible. Many clients want to be hands on stating "I'd rather get bit than you get bit" or insist on restraining their dog for us. Many times, these pets that come off as aggressive in the room are doing so because of the small space, they are fearful, or they are trying to protect the owner. For instance, when Coco came to visit us originally a few months ago, the Doctor was unable to examine her due to her temperament. On this visit, the owner brought her in muzzled and we quickly learned that not only does she do better away from the owner, she does great when she only has females caring for her! She was an angel for us to give her injections, treat her ear infection, and give a pedicure with generally minimal restraint. You can see her enjoying scritches and pets by the staff! I promise you, if we bring your pet in the back to do the exam or treatments, we are handling them with the best care possible! We want them to enjoy their visits with us! So, if you have a pet that is generally unhappy coming to see us, let's try some different ways of handling to see what works best for your pet- though sometimes what works best are medications to help calm them prior to the appointment!

Say Hello to Bru who visited us a couple weeks ago for his neuter! He is our Frenchie of the Week! Bru is a 1year old cutie pie who came from Saving Hope Rescue. He loves to walk and play fetch. A couple interesting facts about this boy- he was a breeder surrender due to having an a**l prolapse (thank goodness he got the help he deserved and a wonderful family to love him!) but he also only has 1 declaw! Bru just needed to be unique!!! #

Everyone we would like you to meet Vinny and Mac! They are 16 week old Chihuahua brothers that we are seeing for their puppy vaccine series! Do not let their small size fool you, they were tough as nails for their pokes! Their owners recently lost both of their senior dogs and needed to fill the void and we are so happy to be a part of their new journey together! Vinny and Mac love to fight with each other but do not really like the cat in the house! They drive their mom crazy with this love nibbles on her neck- but who could stay mad at those little faces!?
