FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
❄ URGENT WARNING: Protect Your Animals from Extreme Cold Temperatures ❄
As dangerously frigid temperatures settle into the region this week, animal owners are strongly urged to take immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of their pets and livestock.
🚨Prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures can cause serious harm, including frostbite and hypothermia, and in some cases, can be life-threatening.
For Companion Animals (Dogs, Cats, etc.):
🐶 Dogs left outside in frigid weather cannot survive these conditions. Even short periods of exposure to extreme cold can be fatal for dogs, particularly smaller or short-haired breeds. It is crucial that pets are brought inside, and provided with warm, dry, and safe shelter.
🐱 While outdoor cats tend to be more resourceful, seeking shelter when necessary, they too require special care. Ensure that your outdoor cats have access to safe, warm spaces or insulated shelters to protect them from the bitter cold.
For Livestock (Including Poultry and Horses):
🐴 It's not just companion animals that need protection during extreme cold. Livestock—including horses, cattle, goats, and poultry—also require special care. All livestock need a well-ventilated, dry shelter to shield them from the cold and wind. A simple windbreak or a three-sided shelter can provide much-needed protection.
‼ Key tips for caring for livestock during extreme cold:
➡ Provide Adequate Shelter: Livestock must have a structural shelter with proper ventilation to avoid frostbite and cold-related illnesses. Dry bedding, such as straw, will help insulate legs and hooves from frostbite.
➡ Offer Extra Food: Animals burn more calories in extreme cold to keep warm. Increase the amount of feed provided to ensure they have enough energy to maintain body heat.
➡ Ensure Fresh Water: Animals need access to fresh, unfrozen water every day. Avoid using frozen streams or snow as a water source. Stock tank heaters and frost-proof watering devices are essential for ensuring that livestock stay hydrated in freezing temperatures.
➡ Keep Animals Dry: Long hair or fleece can offer insulation, but only when it is dry. Wet or muddy fur and fleece lose their insulating properties and can actually cool the animal further as it dries. Be sure to keep animals as dry as possible, and provide them with proper shelter to avoid wet conditions.
🚨In accordance with local and state laws animals MUST be protected from severe weather conditions to remain in a “good state of health”. Be vigilant about monitoring your animals and ensure they are properly sheltered, fed, and hydrated during this polar vortex. Failure to do so could result in injury or death and lead to animal cruelty/neglect charges.
Contact your local law enforcement agency or Macomb County Animal Control if you see an animal that needs immediate intervention.
