This precious Goat in a Coat is already spreading the love and making everyone’s day a whole lot brighter. 🌟🐾

Sending all the love to our furry friends today (and every day)!

With Valentine’s Day approaching, most pet parents know the danger chocolate poses to dogs, but this is a reminder that certain flowers can also be extremely toxic to your pets. Some of the more popular holiday varieties include:

Lilies (all varieties): Kidney failure in cats 🐈

Chrysanthemums (Daisy/Mum): Vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, incoordination, or dermatitis in cats and dogs 🐈🐕

Baby’s Breath: GI upset such as vomiting and diarrhea in both cats and dogs 🐈🐕

Daffodils: Small ingestions can cause GI upset. Large ingestions cause convulsions, low blood pressure, tremors and cardiac arrhythmias in both cats and dogs. Bulbs are the most poisonous part. 🐈🐕

Tulips: Vomiting, depression, diarrhea, hypersalivation in cats and dogs. Highest concentration of toxin in bulb. 🐈🐕

Roses: Although the petals are non-toxic, the thorns can be dangerous if your pet steps on or swallows the stem! 🐈🐕

If you suspect your pet has consumed toxic flowers or plants immediately contact Animal Emergency and Specialty Hospital of Grand Rapids at 616-361-9911 right away. You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Almost half of dogs over the age of 10 will develop cancer. Dogs get cancer at roughly the same rate as humans, while there is less information available about the rate of cancer in cats. February 4th is World Cancer Day, which aims to raise awareness and improve education about cancer.

Early detection is crucial when it comes to cancer in pets. Watch out for signs like lumps, weight loss, or difficulty breathing. If you suspect your furry friend may have cancer, don't hesitate to reach out to Animal Emergency and Specialty Hospital of Grand Rapids at 616-361-9911.

🐶 Meet Wally! 🐾

This adorable 2-month-old lab had a rough start with some GI upset, possibly due to intestinal parasites. Because he wasn’t eating, we kept him overnight with IV fluids and medications to keep him comfortable. 💙

Thankfully, Wally started eating again and stopped vomiting, so he was able to go home the next day—feeling much better! 🏡✨

Wishing Wally lots of love and tummy-settling treats on his road to recovery! 🍖💛

📣 Patient Spotlight: Peachy the Lovebird 💕

Meet Peachy, a brave 15-year-old little lovebird with a big heart and a history of overcoming medical challenges. Recently, Peachy visited our emergency hospital for a consultation with Dr. Faith regarding a toenail that had fallen off.

During the visit:
🩺 Peachy was carefully examined and placed in a bird incubator to help reduce stress.
📋 The owner provided a detailed medical history including prior procedures.
To ensure Peachy’s comfort and healing:
✔️ Pain medication and antibiotics were prescribed to prevent infection and manage discomfort.
✔️ The owner was advised to keep Peachy in a hospital-type cage to limit movement and allow the wound to heal.
✔️ Instructions were provided to avoid cleaning the wound to protect the clot and monitor closely for any changes.

We wish the best of luck to Peachy as he rests and recovers under the watchful eye of his dedicated owner. 🐦💖

🩺🐾 Create a First Aid Kit for Your Pet! 🐾🩺
Emergencies can happen when we least expect them. Whether it's a minor injury or something more serious, having a pet first aid kit on hand can make all the difference! Here’s what to include:

1️⃣ Gauze Pads & Bandages: For minor cuts, scrapes, or wounds. Use cool water to remove any debris from the wound and ensure the bandage is not too tight (if on an extremity).

2️⃣ Tweezers: Perfect for removing splinters, ticks, or other foreign objects.

3️⃣ Thermometer: To monitor your pet’s temperature in case of fever or illness.

4️⃣ Medical Gloves: To protect both you and your pet while treating injuries.

5️⃣ Instant Cold Pack: Helps reduce swelling or soothe pain in case of sprains, bites, or other injuries.

6️⃣ Muzzle or Soft Cloth: For safely restraining an injured or stressed pet during an emergency.

7️⃣ Scissors: To cut tape, gauze, or clothing around a wound.

8️⃣ Pet-Specific Medications: Any meds your pet takes regularly, including allergy medications (always consult your vet before use).

Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to check your pet’s first aid kit regularly to replace any expired items!

📞 Remember, in case of a serious emergency, always contact your veterinarian or head to one of our hospitals immediately.
