So many adorable new patients joined the Family Friends family this week! 🐾 While we had the pleasure of meeting many, here are just a couple we managed to snap a photo of:

🐶 Finn, the 10-week-old Miniature Dachshund, stole hearts during his visit with technician Jess. With those tiny paws and big puppy eyes, how could he not?!

🐺 Mojo, the 11-week-old Alaskan Klee Kai, was all about exploring—especially the bench in his exam room! This little adventurer kept us smiling the whole time.

🚨 It's Toxic Tuesday! 🚨 March is National Pet Poison Prevention Month, and each Tuesday, we’re highlighting common toxins that can put pets at risk. This week, we’re starting with household hazards—everyday items that can be dangerous if ingested.

Did you know that some of the most dangerous toxins for pets are found right inside your home? Many everyday items—like chocolate, grapes, cleaning products, and certain essential oils—can be extremely harmful to dogs and cats.

If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, call us immediately (616-575-6520) or contact the Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661) 🚑

Is your pet limping? 🦴 Whether it appeared suddenly or has been getting worse over time, limping can be caused by anything from a minor sprain to a serious orthopedic issue. Some common causes include soft tissue injuries, arthritis, paw wounds, and even CCL (cranial cruciate ligament) tears. In some cases, certain cancers can also cause limping.

🚨 When to see a vet:
✔ Limping lasts more than 48 hours
✔ Refusing to put weight on the leg
✔ Swelling, pain, or visible injury
✔ Sudden or severe lameness

At Family Friends Veterinary Hospital, we diagnose and treat limping pets every day in both general practice and urgent care. Spring is on the way, and with it comes muddy paws, melting snow, and the return of fleas and ticks! 🌱🐾

As temperatures stay above freezing, these pesky parasites become active earlier than you might expect. Now is the perfect time to start your pet’s flea and tick prevention to keep them protected before the season is in full swing.

Welcome Wednesday 🐾💛 Not much makes us happier than welcoming new patients!

This week, we had the pleasure of meeting Betty, a newly adopted retired racing Greyhound who is adjusting wonderfully to her new home. She was so sweet for her visit, and we’re so happy she’s found her forever family!

We also met Gizmo, the cutest, wrinkliest 10-week-old English Bulldog puppy! 🐶 He came in for his first visit and to discuss scheduling nares surgery, which is unfortunately common for his breed—but he was as happy and lovable as ever!

And last but not least, we had Tipsy’s Litter—eight playful Golden Retriever puppies—come in for their first round of vaccines. They definitely kept their technicians busy, but luckily, they brought a few extra hands for a perfect group photo opp! 📸✨

Throughout Pet Dental Health Month, we’ve been sharing weekly tips to help you make the best choices for your pet’s oral health! 🦷✨

Not all chew toys and treats are created equal—some can actually do more harm than good. The right dental chews and toys can help reduce plaque buildup, but hard bones, hooves, and antlers can crack teeth. Look for the VOHC seal, avoid excessively hard chews, and always supervise your pet while they chew. And don’t forget, even the best chews can’t replace a professional cleaning! 🦷

We’re thrilled to announce that echocardiograms can now be scheduled directly with our very own FFVH doctors! In the past, this service was only available through visiting specialists, but thanks to ongoing training and investment in advanced diagnostics, we can now offer this important heart health screening in-house! 🩺

🔹 Currently available with Dr. Zachos, Dr. Cooper & Dr. Davis (More are in training!)
🔹 Includes an echocardiogram, blood pressure measurement, and specialist interpretation

✨ Before & After: Two Transformative Dental Cleanings! Meet two feline patients who recently had their dental health transformed at FFVH! 🦷🐾

🐈 Our first patient came in with significant juvenile periodontal disease and horizontal bone loss. During her dental procedure, we removed non-vital teeth, performed a deep scaling, and used laser therapy to promote healing. Thanks to her dedicated owner recognizing the signs, she’s now on the path to a healthier, pain-free mouth!

🐈‍⬛ Our second patient, a beloved pet of one of our team members, had a routine dental cleaning when dental x-rays revealed hidden tooth resorption—a condition difficult to detect with a physical exam alone! This is a great reminder of why we recommend x-rays with every dental to catch underlying issues before they cause pain.
