THIS is why we have spay/neuter as a requirement AND help to find as many as we can!

Grand Rapids Pit Bull Alliance firmly believes in spay and neuter and it is a requirement for pet assistance from our organization.

Let's take a moment and talk about the benefits of having your pets spay and neuter for them and for you!

Spay & Neuter, The Compassionate Choice

Spaying and neutering are powerful ways to make a positive impact on both your pet's health and the community. By choosing this simple procedure, you can help address the critical issue of pet overpopulation in our overflowing animal shelters while providing significant health benefits to your furry companion.

🐾 Health Benefits for Your Pet

For Female Pets
Spaying offers critical health protections:
- Prevents life-threatening breast cancer
- Eliminates the risk of painful and potentially fatal uterine infections (pyometra)
- Stops uncomfortable and disruptive heat cycles

For Male Pets
Neutering provides important health advantages:
- Prevents testicular cancer

🐾 Longevity and Quality of Life

Research shows that spayed and neutered pets live an average of 2-3 years longer than unaltered pets. This additional time means more years of companionship and joy with your beloved animal.

🐾 Practical Benefits

Behavior and Comfort
- Female cats in heat cycle every three weeks, experiencing 4-5 days of behavioral changes
- Reduced yowling and frequent urination
- Decreased stress for both pet and owner

Financial Considerations
The cost of spaying or neutering is minimal compared to potential expenses:
- Avoid expensive emergency veterinary care during unexpected births
- Prevent costly treatments for preventable health conditions
- Reduce long-term medical expenses related to reproductive health issues

Community Impact
By spaying or neutering, you directly contribute to:
- Reducing the number of homeless animals
- Decreasing shelter populations
- Preventing unwanted litters
- Supporting community animal welfare

A Responsible Choice
Spaying and neutering is a simple, humane way to ensure your pet's health and well-being while making a meaningful difference in the community.

Consider spay and neuter procedures as an essential part of responsible pet ownership.

Support local spay/neuter programs and initiatives.

Deeohgee Axel needs a hero.

This young boy has been with us now for many months & has clearly had a hard start to life. In foster, he loves the company of his teenage kids & sleeps in bed with them. He has assimilated to life with two other dogs & prefers his female companion who is playful, but tolerant of his silly. Axel has been working through anxiety & fear based aggression (to strangers), to where he takes a daily anxiety medicine. He has been evaluated & is on a training plan through A Pleasant Dog.

His foster family is unable to keep him due to a serious life threatening illness of Axel’s grandpa that requires his foster mom’s utmost care & attention.

Since in rescue, we’ve done a lot of work to help Axel. Sadly, we haven’t got a single application to adopt him. We know that may be due to not many photos, but that’s because phones in his face scare Axel.

This boy is loyal, cuddly, playful & delicate. Axel needs a special person to step up & be his person, as his foster family has important matters to attend to.

We are looking for:
🏡Quiet home with not a lot of people going in/out
🏡Secure yard
🏡Someone who understands dogs need medication like some people do. Prozac is very affordable!
🏡Only dog home or easy going female dog
🏡Someone who is willing to work with the rescue for additional training to help Axel settle into his new environment

If you have got this far please please share for Axel & his foster family 🙏

For , meet our newest volunteers!

🐾Mandace said, “Emerson, my 12 year old, is buddies with Will Lawrence (another youngster volunteer). He was invited to help out a few weeks ago. He had so much fun, I wanted to join! Having only helped out twice, it’s difficult to pin-point the best part of it, but I do really enjoy chatting a bit while food/litter gets re-portioned. We have a 2 year old demon tuxedo kitty named Oreo. He’s either sleeping or in attack mode, but not afraid of people, so... win?”

🐾 Caila jumped into volunteering with both feet! She worked at pantry and also helped unload the 10,000 lbs of food and litter! She likes helping to organize & said she really enjoyed unloading the aforementioned loads delivered recently. She currently has no pets because she travels for work but loves them all nonetheless!

🐾Jenni also jumped right in & after a bit of training from our seasoned volunteers, she was off and running. When asked what made her join us, Jenni said “I wanted to join a group that had the shared goal of helping people in our community. I’m also an animal lover so when I found Pleasant Hearts on Volunteer Match I knew it was meant to be! Everyone deserves to experience the unconditional love of a pet, and it feels good to help in whatever way I can.” She & her husband have a rescue schnauzer/chihuahua mix named Wylie who adds so much joy to their lives!

We love adding to our volunteer family & look forward to continuing to get to know these guys!

❤️Thanks to The CRAP Store & to all who shopped there on Black Friday, they donated 10% of sales for the day which was over $500! Because of them, we were able to purchase almost 400 # of cat food today & it also helped us purchase the reduced price pet food we got earlier this week from Helping People Helping Pets: Harbor Humane Food Bank!!!

This is just one instance of how amazing it is & what can happen when our community comes together - we couldn’t feed all the animals we do without YOUR support!!!❤️
