A Pleasant Dog

A Pleasant Dog World renowned training & behavior support and grooming right here in Grand Rapids, Michigan USA.

A Pleasant Dog teaches people to communicate with their dogs through rewards and positive reinforcement and without force or domination. We do not believe that punishing dogs to behave better is effective or humane. We believe that modern, gentle training produces faster, better results.

Our favorite woodland fawn left this world last weekend after 16 too short years on this planet with us.

Mabel Louise was adopted by her mama from the Humane Society of Midland County 14 years ago. She was her mama’s first pet and one of the first dogs we trained in the infancy of A Pleasant Dog. She was a beautiful, velveteen bubble of beauty who loved her people and small circle of dog friends and siblings fiercely. She helped raise Jenn’s son Milo to be a bully loving boy. She also helped raise and foster a young pitty child, Sasha, who loved her like her mother because she became her mother.

Mabel loved to run on the beach, hike the trails, sun herself, hunt sneks, and snuggle in warm places with her family. When her daddy and brother joined her family a little later, they were instant favorites and part of her small circle of beloveds. To be loved by Mabel Louise was an honor anyone would cherish.

Mabel is survived by her mom and dad, brother, Wilson, aunties, uncles, and nanas, and beloved nieces and nephews, who are all tenderly trying to navigate this world without her.

Mary Oliver tells us,

“you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it
against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.”

But it’s just so hard. Good girl, Bubble. We love you.

Honestly, this is the kindest thing anyone has ever said about our school, and it’s especially meaningful on the heels of RFK’s recent statements and actions against autistic people.

We welcome and celebrate neurodivergent people and pets. We love you just the way you are.

This extraordinary family just brings tears to our eyes. Also I could not pick my favorite photo, so you’re welcome.

We first met Scouty and her parents shortly after they found her abandoned and starving as a youngster. We helped them learn how to set up her environment so she feels safe and to work through scary stimuli. Our friends at treated her anxiety and traumatic stress disorder medically. And this little family was soaring. Just really thriving.

Then all of a sudden, Scouty started picking fights with her sister. Her family brought her back to school and she even lunged and barked at her auntie Jenn (so weird for her). We noticed a hitch in her get along (which often becomes more obvious in dogs when they reach maturity). And sent her back to Dr. Cannady at Plymouth Road.

This is Scouty on NSAIDs. Back to being a happy relaxed girl, not fighting with her sister, and just soaking up the love.

This is why we do what we do, friends. This is our reward Click. Treat. Repeat.

We lost one of the greatest dogs this week, sweet, sweet Tippy. Tippy was one of our early service dogs and loved NOTHING more than to help his people and especially his boy, Daniel.

Even when we got to say goodbye to him last week and he wasn’t feeling well, he was super excited to help me with my jacket and to retrieve items for us at school. Tippy never had a bad day and all who met him loved him.

Tippy, you were the best, goodest boy. Thank you for loving and serving so well. Now please go get those squirrels!
