We know it seems like a good idea to surprise that parrot lover in your life, but it's not!

A bond should be established between the parrot and the intended human prior to the bird going home. Parrots are innately wild creatures, and they don't trust humans easily.

Parrots can easily outlive us, and pre-planning for that is essential, again, prior to bringing the bird home. Who will take on the bird if something were to happen to the intended human?

Parrots are DESTRUCTIVE. They need constant stimulus. They need structure and routine. They need work and patience. They need more than what you are able to see in the cute videos online.

Parrots are stubborn. They don't all talk. They don't all have the ability to sing Bacon Pancakes. They will put holes in your clothes. They will bite. They will destroy your curtains if left unattended too close. They. Will. Scream.

We know we sound like we don't WANT you to have a parrot in your life. We DO think everyone who is able to should adopt a parrot in need of a loving home...

We just want you to be fully informed and prepared before you take the leap and adopt your new Feathered Friend.

For every painful quirk a parrot has, there are at least two beautiful quirks, and that makes it worth it all!

With those items now covered, the greatest needs for the birds are all the various ZuPreem pellets (which are still the birds’ favorite pellets 😉), specifically the medium sized bird pellets, and the pellets for the Cockatoos and African Greys… 🙏

Our Volunteer Spotlight this week is Natalie!!

Natalie is a single mom who started with the aviary back in September after hearing an interview with our founder on 88.1 WYCE. She’s been a lifelong animal lover with many pets over the years and was gifted a blue-crowned conure named Rio when they were both 7yrs old. After spending 25yrs together, which is unusual when an animal is given to a child as a present, Rio passed away at the end of 2020 shortly after Natalie herself was diagnosed with brain cancer…

When asked what her favorite part of being at the aviary is, she says she loves being around parrots again, helping take care of creatures who need someone to take care of them, and earning the trust of some of our surlier residents like Moe here who have been through so much in their lives and don’t trust a lot of people. “There’s something incredibly special about having them see something in you that makes them like you and trust you…”

Birds can make great companions, but they are a LOT of responsibility. People often don’t realize the amount of hard work it can take to care for them properly which is why they get surrounded as often as they do…

Here at Albatross Aviary while we do take in sick, abused, and neglected birds, we also take in birds that are surrendered for a variety of very legitimate reasons, whether that be they were more work than someone realized or they outlived their owners who they were extremely attached to and started having behavioral issues…

While Zelda is laid up recovering from her broken wing, Link moved them into a bigger enclosure where these two “lovebirds” (Rosellas) will be able to socialize much more with the other birds AND the volunteers… 💛 🦜🦜

While all the bills we pay and money we raise benefit the birds, if you’d like to give something to them directly, they’re almost COMPLETELY out of their Mazura Softbill low-iron bird food which happens to be ON SALE right now!! 😀

They also really need more mealworms, particularly the starlings and Link pictured below… 🪱🐦‍⬛
