JennMarie Equestrian Exploring improvement of horse and human partnerships through symbiotic, compassionate relationships with horses. Hi there! Thanks for stopping by!

I have been into Equestrian matters for over 20 years, my background is in Dressage, Ranch Riding and Liberty. My influencers are Luke Gingerich and Warrick Schiller, well established and highly talented horsemen. I do what I do for my horses sake, always looking to relationship building, unity and willingness instead of force. I follow behavior chain formulas used in operant conditioning and I am for positive reinforcement as well as using correction.

What's the deal with mane bags? Do they really make your horse's mane longer? When to use/not use them?

I was asked a question recently about mane bags and the truth is that there are many factors on whether your horse is going to have a long mane/tail.

I've heard so many 'secrets' of horse hair care, from - leave it totally alone, to condition it every day... braids vs no braids, tail up or down, brushing vs finger detangle, silicone based shine vs protein based shine. I can tell you what I learned:

Genetics, hair color, sun/wind exposure, stress, horseplay and hormones are the biggest factors. The bags help protect the length of the surface of the hair but not the roots. We can influence exposure the most with bags which cause the most breakage from sun and catching.

My two quarterhorses both had the same hair treatment since birth, EspanaSilk Grooming Products shampoo and conditioner, sunscreen shine spray, and braided in bags. The bags and sunscreen help keep the sun off and reduce breakage. This worked great until my mare had her baby and while nursing her mane shed to 'normal', about neck length, so I keep it braided and not in bags.

Orbit's mane is quite long, I like his in bags but if he loses some at the roots, it's mostly from rubbing and horseplay with others. So I limit his access to trees, give him skin supplements to reduce itching, and hope for the best when it comes to horseplay as I don't want to keep him from good company.

My Lusitano Aurora has long mane, so does her parents, she was raised in a pasture till 3, her mane thinned from the roots in the weeks after the stress of traveling, but it is growing back fast. I will be keeping hers in bags when the sun comes out especially because it is white.

I condition, braid and knot and electric tape up all tails in the winter, as I find caked mud to be the most drying of all the elements. I like tail bags for my horses who don't lose hair easily from the roots.

The EspanaSilk Grooming Products keep the hair strong with natural proteins without the use of synthetic silicone shine which can dry the hair and cause more breakage. It's really the only product I trust for my, and my horses hair. I will continue to use mane bags on an individual bases and in keeping with the sun exposure.

When considering something new, you never know what will happen if you just give it a try!

Last year I decided to try to show Orbit in Virtual Western Dressage virtual with Glass-Ed, since my regular dressage mount Vega was busy raising a baby. Orbit has never done this before, he excels at liberty so we had stuck with that for sometime. We both learned a ton through this experience and ended up virtual grand champion, we have so much to learn and are grateful for the judges kind feedback on where we can improve.

Thankful for my boyfriend Zach who filmed for me all last summer, he also was brand new learning to call out and film dressage tests at the same time! So proud of these boys who made a great team showing last year πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ˜πŸ₯‡

EspanaSilk Grooming Products got us clean and shiny, and Sundial Show Clothing created the Showshirts that are amazingly cool in the summer and warm in cool weather

What a year, 2024! So many hours training client horses and showing western dressage with Orbit, getting my dream Lusitano (and consuming lots of EspanaSilk Grooming Products whitening shampoo), watching my heart horse Vega give birth to her filly Siri, and teaching driving to Perrin and the mini horses. Rich with memories, i'm ready to usher in another year of horse fun! Welcome 2025~

If I bear joy, peace and love, they are fruits of the Spirit of a loving God who lives in me. The horses guide me to him every day, he can be found anywhere for the temple curtain was torn by the sacrifice of Christ, and he resides in us as we ask...

I love the reality of Christ shining into us, and the Christmas meaning of the light being shown into the great darkness.
