Join our entire team in WELCOMING Dr. Ed Payne to Lakeland!! 🤩🥳🙌👏

Dr. Payne is joining our veterinary care team after spending the last 20 years in emergency medicine where he spent over half of that time working as a Criticalist and Medical Director for various hospitals across the country. Having graduated from Michigan State University and completed an emergency and critical care internship at MSU the Midwest has become his home. After an almost 20 year absence from the Midwest, Dr. Payne and his wife decided to return with their two children to be closer to family. While the decision was hard for Dr. Payne to leave his first love of Critical Care medicine, he is excited for the next chapter in his career and is looking forward to bringing his advanced medical training to the primary care setting.

Pssstt... Dr. Payne and our Dr. Cunningham were classmates in veterinary school at MSU over 20 year ago!! And have been friends since. We are ecstatic about him being part of our Lakeland team!!

Some of the fun "doctoring" we did this past week: GDV surgery, gastrotomy with foreign body removal, blood typing, blood transfusion, chemotherapy, ultrasound-guided liver aspirates, cancer staging, cystotomy with urolith removal, tracheotomy, and venous cutdowns.

A behind the scenes look at our surgery suite. Fully equipped for your pet's comfort and safety. Let's walk through the importance of the precautions we take while your pet is under anesthesia:

1. IV catheters, IV fluids and fluid pumps keep blood pressure from falling to a dangerously low level
2. Endotracheal tubes keep the airway open in order to prevent breathing problems
3. Anesthesia machines deliver oxygen and inhalant gas so that surgical procedures are painless
4. EKGs detect abnormal heartbeats which have the potential to be fatal if gone undetected and untreated
5. Pulse Oximeters make sure vital organs are receiving enough oxygen
6. Blood pressure monitoring detects changes that can lead to anesthetic related complications
7. Air warming blankets keep the body temperature from becoming cold
8. Veterinary surgical teams take a hands-on approach by closely monitoring vitals signs and making adjustments to the protocol as directed by our veterinarians

As part of our Green Initiative, we recently assessed the environmental impact of our toilet paper usage. The Natural Resources Defense Council's 2020 toilet paper sustainability rankings were an eye opener for us! To decrease our carbon footprint, we now only purchase toilet paper with an A ranking.
