September 1st! Another archery season has begun (in some states)! New regulation changes in Minnesota this year. You can now import deer heads back into Minnesota without capping them as long as they are brought to a taxidermist within 48 hours.

If you are going to cape one and bring them to a taxidermist make sure you leave plenty of cape. There is no reason to cut a deer cape short or all the way up the brisket. See the picture below as I cut them about half way between the front and rear legs. I also don’t cut through the ribs while gutting deer.

When caping a skull I prefer a small Y incision like I have pictured, there is no reason to skin the deer all the way down the back of the neck. It’s just 2 extra hours of sewing on my end. And more difficult to hide the seam. Be careful around the eyes nose and lips.

Good luck and shoot straight this fall.
