The Story of Urbosa

This sweet angel came to us covered in battle scars, lean and rippled with muscles. She was willing to be loved and often times came off as aggressive when she demanded that love. She was petrified of children and certain other dogs would trigger her. We can only speculate what had transpired in the life prior to her being rescued, but I did not let that stop me from helping her turn out to be one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever had the pleasure of loving! She use to bite at my children and as most parents know that is heartbreaking and in most cases the children would out win over the dog, but we knew as a family someone had already given up on her and we refused to do that without giving her a chance. So, we set up boundaries, Urbosa would not be left alone or unsupervised with the children and the kids would give her all the space she demanded. Ass most know aggressive behavior stems from fear and what we had in our hands was a dog who had once been so afraid she had to prove she wasn’t.

Often times by snarling and nipping, over the span of months. I would often take her on trips or to work where I knew I could handle her and working on her automatic focus was one of the best things I could have done for her, she learned to ignore her surroundings that often caused her fright and instead trusted me to guide her around in safety. There were times a dog or person got to close and she would react, so those sessions would always be at the consideration of Urbosa’s comfort level. She soon became a wonderful greeter of people and most dogs! After months of having the children respect her space and fill her bowl with treats or food, she then learned to love and trust them as well, a true breakthrough was when she jumped up on the couch with my son, stared at him for a split second and rested her head on his lap. It was harder for her to trust my son than it was for her to trust my daughter, but in that moment I realized..six months later we had a breakthrough and she was no longer that scared pup.

She was an amazing dog and she lives on in my training, every method I do is to build a bond between the dog and myself. One built on by trust and respect.

The alpha theory is played out or used wrong, the alpha should not be feared for their power, but respected for their love and protection. Don’t think of yourself as the dominant one, think of yourself as head of the household as one would a child. Urbosa taught me that you can not use methods that instill fear, especially on an fearful aggressive dog. We do not use Pronged collars or Shock collars, this is not me bashing those who do. This is meaning giving my opinion how it is wrong, it may be a quick fix, but in their senior years the behavioral problems you suppressed with pain will manifest and sometimes double. Love, affection, respect, protection, all can be obtained with patience and rewards.
