Carla Thornton has loved horses since she was a young girl. The performance ring is where she found her passion for Arabian horses. Sadly, after a horrible back injury sustained during a riding accident, she had to redirect her pathโฆ so she found a love of breeding and genetics within the Arabian breed. โAs a breeder, the year wait for a foal is so exciting, and that excitement never dwindles from year to year. So many hopes, dreams, and even doubts as you think โDid I make the right decision crossing this horse with that horse?โโฆ up until you help a mare bring a beautiful new life into the world and you lay your eyes on that babyโs precious face for the first time, watch them make their first steps, and then think โYes, this one will be a championโ, says Thornton.
Carla carefully selects a stallion that possesses the type, athleticism, beauty and disposition the Arabian breed should want to see in their foals and one that compliments her mares. She makes it a point within her program to not breed specifically for halter or performance, but to breed for an Arabian that possesses both beauty and an ability to excel under saddle as well.
Year after year Aspen Creek Arabiansโ foals are shown in the futurities and sweepstakes programs. They come home to grow up and then go back for performance training with ABCentre and if they donโt stay with her program as a broodmare, they find a performance career and are placed with the perfect home for them. โSelling my babies is the hardest partโ Carla says, โeach foal I have birthed and watched grow and become the individual they are, but Ali Brady and I carefully select buyers to make sure they go to the perfect home.โ
