Interesting!

By now, you've probably seen 100 northern lights photos from last night. But did you know that these events may impact wildlife behavior?

Auroras are natural light shows caused by magnetic storms that have been triggered by solar activity. Various species of wildlife like bees, whales and birds can navigate by detecting the Earth's magnetic field. An intense solar storm can therefore throw a wrench in wildlife navigation, especially migrating birds flying at night.

A 2023 research article looked at migrating birds and the impacts of strong geomagnetic disturbances on their behavior. What the research found was that yes, it does appear those beautiful northern lights, may alter nocturnal bird migration. Fewer birds migrate during strong geomagnetic disturbances and it may cause migrating birds to experience more difficulty with navigation.
