When opossums are born, they have no fur and their eyes are closed. They enter mom’s pouch and stay there for approximately eighty days.

This is because opossums are marsupials and live in a mom’s pouch like a kangaroo! 🦘

But what happens if mom passes away?

🐾 Orphan babies will remain feeding on mom after her death and will become sick if not rescued quickly.

🐾Often when moms are killed by a domestic dog or hit by a car, all or most of the orphans may survive and need help!

What can I do?

🐾Remove orphan opossums from mom's ni***es and bring them to a rehabilitator.

🐾If you don’t feel comfortable searching/touching mom, bring her and her babies to a rehabilitator.

🐾Now that you know this information, place some gloves and a box in your car and watch the roads for dead or wounded opossums.

You are now officially a member of the Opossum Pouch Patrol! 📛

With high temperatures this week and next, we would like to remind you that asphalt temperatures get significantly hotter than the air! If you have a dog, please see the diagram below. If it is 77 degrees out, the asphalt temperature is 125 degrees. Dog paws can get burnt in as little as 30-60 seconds in these conditions.

If it's too hot for your bare feet, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Take care when walking your furry friend. Walk them in the grass or on an unpaved trail. LPD parks have many unpaved and shaded trails that are great for walking your dog! If you must walk them on asphalt, go in the early morning or at dusk when temperatures are cooler. Make sure you check the weather before you go on a walk to see what the air temperature is, and use this picture as a guide to see what the asphalt temperature is before taking your dog out.
