DFW Pug Rescue Club, Inc.

DFW Pug Rescue Club, Inc. DFW Pug Rescue Club, Inc. is a 501c3 charitable organization for the rescue, care & placement of Pugs. Mission Statement: DFW Pug Rescue Club, Inc.
(132)

was formed for the purpose of providing rescue, care and adoption of unwanted, mistreated or homeless pugs. DFW Pug Rescue Club was founded in early 1996 and incorporated in July 1997 as a charitable, non-profit corporation. We are one of the largest pug rescue organizations in the United States having rescued and placed over 8,500 pugs. Veterinary care is our biggest expense averaging $220,000 a

year. All pugs rescued are taken immediately to the vet where they are examined, tested and treated for parasites, infections, vaccinated, sterilized, and microchipped before being placed in a foster or permanent home. DFWPRC is an all-volunteer, foster-based organization — there are no paid positions. We do not have a staging area to hold our rescue pugs. We depend on the generosity of our volunteers to provide foster homes until permanent homes can be located. You can help to promote our mission and be a part of this exciting volunteer opportunity. Please visit our website and social media sites for information on DFW Pug Rescue. We rescue pugs in Texas, Louisiana, and parts of New Mexico since there are no pug rescues in those other areas!

Four-year-old Peta is an affectionate and cuddly girl with expressive eyes and a heart full of love. She prefers to be close to her pack at all times, and adores socializing with adults, children, and other dogs. Her favorite things include going for walks, going for car rides, relaxing with chew toys, and eating. Peta is not one to turn down a treat, a meal, an opportunity to eat a couple of bites from other dogs’ bowls, or a chance to steal snacks from toddlers (though she does so gently and without aggression). Despite her history of food thievery, she has lovely manners overall, is housetrained, and is crate trained (though she would prefer to be uncreated and snuggled against a human in a bed or on a sofa). If you’d like to make room in your home for this sweet and easygoing girl, lock up your snacks and apply for her at dfwpugs.com.

Three-year-old Flex is a happy, active, outgoing, and playful tripod; he does everything that other dogs his age can do, but with one less leg — which is pretty impressive! Flex came to the rescue after he was hit by a car and sustained a broken leg, which never healed properly (even after surgery) and had to be removed. And none of this has slowed him down one bit! He enjoys playing with kids and other dogs, is a worthy tug-of-war opponent, and can jump on and off surfaces with ease. In his more chilled-out moments, Flex adores snuggling and relaxing with an assortment of chew toys. He has made excellent progress with his housetraining and can let himself outside through his family’s magnetic screen door. He’s also crate trained. Flex’s ideal forever family will provide him with plenty of exercise and affection (he’s a true Velcro boy). We know Flex can keep up with you, but can you keep up with him? If you’d like to make Flex a permanent part of your family, apply for him at dfwpugs.com.

Someone is a real snuggle bunny this morning. 💕 This is my foster, Pip. He’s a two year-old, energetic, loving bundle of joy. He starts each morning with the snuggle and he ends each evening with another. Throughout the day, expect to be bombarded with his hugs. He loves other dogs and takes a lot of joy playing with them. He loves a good zoomie.

Being just a pup, he is very playful, but also very curious. He will follow you around to see what you are doing, but he has very good manners. He walks well on a leash, and he’s getting very good at his house training. We had a few accidents at first, but once he learned the routine for going out, he’s done fine.

He’s available for adoption. Although we will miss him terribly, we know an ideal home for him would have kids to play with and/or other playful dogs. He would also be a great companion for someone who is very active, for example, a running partner in the evening or morning or trips to the park, he loves to play fetch!

As always, you can go to www.dfwpugs.com to learn more about this sweet boy and fill out an adoption application!

10-month-old Winnie’s foster mom describes her as an active girl who will “steal your affection and then your sandwich.” She is social, adventurous, a bit mischievous, and wants to be where the action is! Winnie adores the company of adults, kids, and other dogs, and will play with all of the above. She seems to have two speeds: Amped up and sleeping. When she’s in sleep mode, she prefers to be curled up against (or planted directly on) a human. Winnie is close to being housetrained, is crate trained, and mostly polite when it comes to food (though she can be a bit aggressive when a treat is dangled in front of her, and we can relate). Her ideal forever family will be as energetic as she is, provide her with frequent exercise, help her to brush up on her manners training, invite her to join in as many family activities as possible, and include playful companions such as other dogs or kids. This is a girl who likes to keep alone time to a minimum! If you’d like to explore the world with Winnie by your side, apply for her at dfwpugs.com.

One-year-old Lolly is outgoing, confident, and fearless, bringing energy with her everywhere she goes. Did we mention she’s also smart? She understands a suite of commands and taught herself how to use the doggie door in her foster home. In her free time, Lolly enjoys active pursuits including engaging in wrestling matches with other dogs, fetching and chewing on toys, going for walks, accompanying her foster family on car rides, and playing with kids. When it’s time to rest, she enjoys a good snooze in a human lap. According to her foster mom, she is 90% housetrained and loves sleeping in her crate at night. Lolly’s ideal forever family will provide her with plenty of exercise and opportunities to socialize and play, while lovingly reinforcing her manners training. If you’d like an up-for-anything best friend (and enthusiastic car passenger) for life, apply for Lolly at dfwpugs.com!

08/25/2024

One-year-old Beanz is looking for a forever family who can match his energy level. He enjoys an on-the-go lifestyle that includes rifling through his foster family’s toy box and sampling every single toy, playing with other dogs, chasing cats, and running over every available surface (including people sitting on furniture). When Beanz isn’t showing off his feats of athletic strength, he’s busy charming his foster family with kisses and affectionate nibbles. He’s making excellent progress with his housetraining, is crate trained, and is doggie door trained. He is a polite eater and is food motivated overall, but has repeatedly turned up his nose at dog treats (making him a traitor to the entire pug race). Beanz’ ideal forever home will help continue his manners training, lead an active lifestyle, and make sure he gets plenty of exercise. He would be thrilled to have another energetic canine playmate! Although he loves kiddos, we think that a home with older children would work best for Beanz due to his excitable ways. If you’d like to make Beanz a part of your family’s everyday adventures, apply for him at dfwpugs.com!

08/25/2024

Despite his youthful age, two-year-old Verne is a sweet old soul at heart who prefers a quiet, relaxed atmosphere to a home that is bustling with activity. Due to his challenging past, Verne can be timid in new environments and becomes shaky when he hears loud noises or sees quick movements. When he feels safe and secure, however, the true Verne shines through; he’s a loving, Velcro boy who loves to snuggle quietly with his humans and show off his gentlemanly manners. Verne walks politely on the leash and is housetrained and crate trained (though he prefers to roam the house freely and can be trusted to do so). We believe that Verne would thrive in a mellow home environment and a quieter neighborhood, with an affectionate family who will allow him to sleep in bed with them. He would be fine as an only dog in the home or as part of a family who has older and more relaxed dogs. In return, Verne’s forever family will have a loyal and loving companion for life who happens to sport a lustrous fawn coat with alluring dark highlights! If you’d like to make Verne your permanent cuddle buddy, apply for him at dfwpugs.com.

After being found dumped in Dallas, four-month-old pug mix Toadette is living the playful and carefree puppy life. She is mischievous, loving, silly, outgoing, and curious, and prefers to always be near a human or another dog. Toadette’s leisure interests include running around in the yard, asking to be fed (even if she’s just had a meal), chewing on bones and toys, burrowing under blankets, and observing and learning from the older dogs in her foster home. She is working on her housetraining, is curious about the doggie door, and is content to chill in her playpen as long as another dog is there with her. Her ideal forever home will have a securely fenced yard, at least one other friendly dog, and at least one person who is home most of the time to provide companionship, socialization, and training. If you’d like to make this gal the newest and tiniest member of your family, apply for Toadette at dfwpugs.com!

Two-year-old Knuckles is a sweet, easygoing guy who enjoys the company of adults and children, other dogs, and cats. His favorite things include fetching balls and parading them around the home, playing tug, running around with other dogs, and cuddling up to humans. He is a slow and polite eater, walks nicely on a leash, is crate trained (and snoozes in his crate through the night), and is making excellent progress with his housetraining. Due to his laid-back nature, we believe that Knuckles would be at home in almost any family environment where he has frequent companionship and many opportunities to run and play. If you’d like to make Knuckles a permanent part of your family, apply for him at dfwpugs.com!

🌟🌟Important Update!! 🌟🌟

Hello pug lovers and friends and supporters of DFW Pug Rescue. July was an unusually busy month taking in 42 pugs, with only half that number being adopted.
As Foster Director, I want to give you an update on our current situation:
We have 65 adult dogs still in foster homes and as of this weekend we will have 10 puppies. As you can see, this is still quite a few pugs that the rescue is still caring for.
Our adoptions have picked up, and with that, our foster homes are getting freed up so that we can get the newly rescued pugs out of the clinics timely. We have also had a tremendous response from our call for fosters, with applications pouring in. Processing these does take time, and we are working those through the approval process as quickly as possible.
We are at a place where we feel comfortable opening our intake. This will be slow at first, starting with bringing in up to 5 pugs per week for now, which will leave space for emergency intakes. We will always take in pugs in emergency situations. During this “down” time we did take in 2 such pugs as emergency admissions so that they would be safe. Once we have new foster homes in place, we will begin to increase our intake. Rest assured; we will continue to monitor our intake numbers closely to avoid the clinic back up going forward.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the love, kindness, generosity and patience you have shown over the last few weeks.

MJ McKenna

Foster Director/Foster Medical Coordinator

After being abandoned and spending time as a stray, two-year-old Camille (known as “Cami” to her foster mom) is learning what it’s like to be part of a loving family. She loves human companionship more than anything, wants to be around her people 24/7, cuddles like a total champ, and likes to have her people next to her while she’s enjoying toys, bones, and stuffies. Camille is already housetrained, crate trained, doggie door trained, and is a polite eater. Her forever family will need to help her brush up on other ladylike manners, ensure that there is one person at home most of the time to help her feel secure and provide her with consistent snuggles, and offer patience and support as she settles into a new home routine. Although she does well with other dogs her size, we believe that being the only dog in the home would suit her best, as she enjoys being showered with attention. If you’d like to make Camille a permanent part of your family, apply for her at dfwpugs.com!

08/22/2024

Despite his youthful age, two-year-old Sparky is an affectionate and mellow guy who is content to relax with the adults, children, and dogs in his pack. He has short bursts of playful energy (and is occasionally moved to roughhouse with his stuffies), but he mostly prefers the couch potato lifestyle. Sparky’s favorite things include napping on soft surfaces and any activity that allows him to be around his people, whether watching TV, providing emotional support and morale-boosting services on those work-from-home days, or spooning in bed with his humans at night. He is housetrained (and will let you know when he needs to go out), chills quietly in his crate, has nice leash manners, and eats his food politely (preferring to graze slowly rather than wolf it down in one sitting). Due to his easygoing nature, we believe that Sparky would fit right into many types of family environments, as long as he has plenty of opportunities to socialize, snuggle, and be held. If you’re looking for a laid-back and loving companion, he’s your guy! Apply for Sparky at dfwpugs.com.

One-year-old Ladybug is charming, social, active, and ready for her forever family! This lovely lady just had stenotic nares surgery courtesy of DFW Pug Rescue to help ensure a lifetime of easier breathing and is ready to live life to the fullest after her nose job. She’s already putting those new nostrils to work and enjoying active pursuits including playing with other dogs, going for walks, and running around the house. Her foster mom reports that she is an all-around joy, as she loves socializing with adults and children of all ages, is crate trained and doggie door trained, eats her food politely, and is making good progress with her housetraining. Ladybug’s ideal forever family will make sure that she gets plenty of exercise, preferably by playing with another friendly dog in the home! They’ll also help her continue to brush up on her training and give her ample affection and companionship. Ladybugs have long been a symbol of abundance, prosperity, and good luck, and this girl is ready to be a loving family’s good luck charm! If you’d like to adopt Ladybug, apply for her at dfwpugs.com.

08/20/2024

Four-month-old pug/Brussels griffon mix Possum, aka “Awesome Possum” to his foster family, has a loving heart, an adventurous spirit, and a distinctive, flowing mane that flutters gently in the breeze. His very puppy-like interests include playing with his foster pug siblings, getting the zoomies in the yard, going for walks (he is apparently a very bouncy walker), and chasing balls and stuffed animals. In his more mellow moments, Possum enjoys being carried around the house like a baby. On top of being fun, playful, and sweet, Possum is a total smarty pants; he’s already housetrained, caught on to the doggie door quickly, will put himself in the crate at bedtime (though he would prefer to have a buddy in there rather than sleep solo), and will sit on command for treats. Next stop for Possum: Harvard! Given his young age and high energy level, Possum’s ideal forever family will have at least one person who is home most of the time to continue his training and ensure he gets plenty of exercise and socialization. A friendly and energetic canine playmate is a must for this outgoing boy as well! If you want to adopt a loving and friendly boy who quite possibly will have the best head of hair in your family, apply for Possum at dfwpugs.com!

I want to personally thank all our donors and volunteers, as well as family and friends of our volunteers and donors! I am overwhelmed by your generosity and support.

As the person who pays the bills for the group, I have always insisted we maintain a "financial cushion" to get us through the hard times. We've done very well - until the hard times stretched into the last two years. Like all rescue groups and shelters in Texas, we have been overwhelmed with the number of incoming dogs. This situation strains our foster homes and volunteers, in addition to depleting our financial cushion. With more dogs than foster homes, some of the pugs have had to remain in the clinics which adds many days of boarding fees to the medical costs.

The board of directors had to make the hard decision to shut intake, and to be totally transparent with our volunteers and donors about our need for donations. We needed funds to build up our cushion again so we may continue to pay our clinics in full and on time. We have and will continue to be, good stewards of any money donated to us.

And wow! All of you responded overwhelmingly to help us continue to save the pugs! Our total today is $72,958.45! We will be able to add to that total as the matching funds come in. We do need more foster homes to be able to open up intake - but we are reaching our financial cushion goal - thanks to you!

Last - congratulations to Sunni Starkes and her team for running such a successful campaign to help the pugs!

Hope to see you at Pugoween in the Park!
