Some helpful points here to keep in mind with all this smoke we keep getting. A few highlights to remember are, a horse’s respiratory rate should be 12 to 24 breaths a minute, if it is over this your horse may be struggling with the smoke and you should consider calling a veterinarian. Also, it is not safe to exercise your horse at all if the AQI is over 200, if it is 150 or above you should consider walking only, and at 100 to 150 you should consider light exercise, and keeping sessions short.

Less than 5% of all graduating veterinary students go into equine practice, and 50% of those people leave equine within five years. In just two years time, Bear River has lost three equine veterinarians to small animal jobs. This is not sustainable, and those of us that are left are stretched extremely thin. To all our horse clients!

Due to the recent Equine Herpesvirus outbreak affecting several counties in California, the California State Veterinarian is now recommending postponing all non-essential horse travel for at least 14 days.

Equine herpesvirus is spread by aerosolized secretions, horse to horse contact, and contact with infected surfaces. An affected horses can shed the virus for 7-10 days.

Equine herpesvirus causes respiratory distress, abortion, neonatal death and a neurological condition called Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM). If you see your horse exhibiting any respiratory (increased rate or effort in breathing, nasal discharge etc.) or neurological signs (stumbling, leaning), please isolate your horse and call your veterinarian.

Bear River Mobile is available if you have any further questions or concerns. (530) 559-8910.

Hope you and your horses stay safe and healthy!

Rabies is 100% fatal. The vaccine is cheap and very effective. Even though it’s rare, it’s not worth the risk to not vaccinate; both to your horse and to anyone who comes in contact with your horse. Please vaccinate.

Unique opportunity for part time veterinary assistant. Looking for a motivated individual who isn’t afraid to get a little dirty out in the field and wants to see the beautiful country side of Nevada and Placer counties. We are a mixed animal practice with 3 veterinarians, and are looking for someone to ride on the truck with the veterinarians 2-3 days a week. Inventory management, animal restraint, and driving skills needed. Livestock and equine experience highly suggested. Hours may vary by day and season but the practice is generally quite busy with a large number of emergencies. Our staff is a close knit group of people, and we are hoping to find another good fit. Must be good with people and be able to take initiative. We are willing to coach the right individual along. Basic computer and phone skills and a clean driving record also necessary. Hourly pay depends on experience.
