Being in the heart of winter often provokes the question:
How cold is too cold for my dog to play outside?
As you can imagine, the answer to this question isn’t a straightforward one given the many factors that come into play. But we’ll do our best to break it down. Some factors to consider when deciding how long your dog should be playing or walking outside are:
🐶 Coat Type: Dogs with thicker and longer coats will be able to better sustain colder temperatures than dogs with shorter hair or thinner coats.
🐶 Coat Color: Even coat color can come into play. Dogs with darker coats will absorb more heat from the sun if there is no cloud cover.
🐶 Age and Health Conditions: Puppies, older dogs, and dogs with chronic health conditions will become colder more easily because their immune systems are not as strong.
🐶 Size: Larger dogs will retain their heat more than smaller dogs. It is important, however, to maintain your dog at a healthy weight throughout the winter and simply buy them a coat or sweater if necessary.
🐶 Weather Conditions: More than just temperature should be considered. Dogs will get cold more quickly in damp, windy, or cloudy conditions.
Keeping in mind each dog is unique and weather conditions may vary, most dogs will still be comfortable with temperatures above 45 degrees, smaller dogs and puppies, older dogs, or chronically ill dogs will struggle below 32 degrees, and most dogs will become cold easily below 20 degrees (Source: Dr. Jennifer Coates, DVM, “How Cold Is Too Cold for Your Dog” on PetMD.com). Temperatures in between these levels are when the factors above become particularly relevant.
If your dog is experiencing any signs or symptoms of frostbite or hypothermia (sluggishness, confusion, significant shivering, pale skin or gums, or low heart and breathing rates), make sure to bring your dog inside and give us a call immediately at 847-223-5593! 🥼

Wanting more details on what’s in the back of the clinic? 👀
Wondering how a quaint, boutique clinic can pack such a powerful medicinal punch? 🤔
Follow Riley through Part ✌️of his tour at Village Veterinary Clinic!
Whether you’re with your pet or when your pet is in the back of the clinic with us, our goal is to keep them feeling their typical happy, silly selves in our fear-free environment while we administer the finest veterinary care. 🩺
While we keep the back a fun and comfortable environment for your pet, you’ll also find much of the inner workings and vital components to the clinic, such as:
🐶 Another scale to check weight as necessary to ensure proper dosages are administered.
🐶 A variety of potentially necessary injections kept in a clean, organized fridge.
🐶 Loads of snacks to keep your pet distracted, comfortable, and happy as we perform any procedures.
🐶 Our clean, well-stocked surgery room, decked out with a host of equipment, including sophisticated heart and lung monitors to keep your babies safe, our anesthesia, and dental x-ray machine.
🐶 Spacious, clean crates that allow your pet to be relaxed and comfortable after any procedures.
🐶 A pharmacy and lab station where we perform a variety of lab work. Some of the work that we perform includes bloodwork to check kidney and liver function as well as red blood cells and white blood cells, ear smears to check for infections, fine needle aspiration of lumps to see what type of cells they are, and urinalysis to check for UTIs.
🐶 An X-ray room to evaluate a variety of potential conditions.
🐶 Our grooming room to keep your pup looking fresh and clean!

Do you get more anxiety than your pet about upcoming vet appointments?
In our experience, most of our furry clients love their trips to Village Vet! But we totally understand that life is busy for you, and you also do all you can to make your pet comfortable coming to the vet!
To help you help us, we’ve put together a list of the best things you can do to help prepare your pet for a trip to the vet!
🐾 Make sure your pet is ready for lots of treats! When they come in hungry, we can give them treats to help distract them from procedures.
🐾 Put cat carriers out the day before. This allows your cat to get used to it so that the trip in the carrier isn’t so stressful.
🐾 Make sure to allow enough time for traffic. If you come in feeling stressed and rushed, your pet will feed off that energy and feel the same way.
🐾 Make sure you are aware of any new diets or medications. It’s important to keep your veterinarian informed of these developments.
🐾 If you are coming in for an annual exam, be sure to bring in a stool sample for us.
We provide a fear-free clinic environment, but in the event that you have an anxious pet, let us know ahead of time so we can have a room ready for them when they arrive and so any anxiety medication can be administered as necessary.
