I am a little bat. I do not suck your blood, and I definitely don't want to get stuck in your hair - that's just gross. If I should accidentally fly into your house, please don't hit me with cricket bats and brooms. It really hurts, and I am so scared. It was an accident; I didn't mean to scare you. I am just as scared as you are. I am fighting for my life, and you are just scared; it is not a fair fight.

Should I land on the floor, I can't get up again; I will need your help. Just use a towel and take me outside. I promise, I will fly away immediately. I eat mosquitoes and a lot of other pests that can harm your garden. Our homes are being torn down for more buildings, and we have limited places to go. So, if I do accidentally fly into yours, switch off your light and leave the outside light on with the door open. I promise, I will be out in a flash.

Kind regards,
Your tiny, little, harmless bat.

Is it a rock, or maybe a mushroom? No, it’s sand food (Pholisma sonorae), a rare, parasitic plant that thrives in the shifting sands of the Sonoran Deserts. The unique herb grows from the roots of other plants like buckwheat and ragweed, and can stretch up to two meters tall, with its oval-shaped stem and tiny flowers peeking out of sand dunes. It absorbs water through its scaly spine’s stomata, which it can share with its host plant in times of drought.

With a California Rare Plant Ranking of 1B.2, sand food is considered threatened in California and elsewhere, likely due to human development and off-road vehicle use in its habitat.

But there is hope for this rare curiosity, thanks to the Kw’tsán National Monument campaign, spearheaded by the Fort Yuma Quechan Indian Tribe earlier this year. The movement would establish over 390,000 acres of Imperial County land as a national monument, which could forever protect over 25 rare California plants found nowhere else on Earth, including sand food.

Join us as we support the vital effort to conserve this land with deep cultural and ecological significance. Learn more about the Kw’tsán National Monument http://ProtectKwtsan.org

THIS !! They’re invasive, weak, and smell horrible!

Native to Asia Bradford pears are an invasive species known to take over and kill ecosystems; spreading quickly throughout surrounding areas they choke out native species !
