Why shouldn’t you pet a service dog?

Petting a service dog is discouraged for several reasons:

1. **Working Dog**: Service dogs are trained to perform specific tasks for their handlers, and petting them can distract them from their work.

2. **Focus**: These dogs need to maintain their focus on their tasks and their handler, so interruptions can interfere with their ability to assist effectively.

3. **Handler's Safety**: If a service dog is distracted, it may not be able to protect or assist its handler, especially in critical situations.

4. **Respect**: Service dogs are working animals, not pets. It’s important to respect their role and the training they've received.

5. **Handler’s Comfort**: Some handlers may have disabilities that affect their comfort level with people approaching and touching their dog.

A lot of my clients seem to be very uncomfortable with the idea of separating their dog and child for safety reasons. But I recently had an epiphany - they all assumed that separation was the same as isolation. And it's not.

Using management strategies, such as using a crate (that little fingers can't poke through) where a dog can rest while a baby has tummy time, provide separation between the dog and child. But neither the dog or child is isolated. Everyone can still see each other. The parent can still interact with everyone. And with time and patience, everyone can be very comfortable and safe with such an arrangement.

So now, I am always reminding clients that "Separation is not the same as isolation." It's simply a way for parents to function and do the impossibly difficult job of raising kids and dogs together.

Owners and trainers both need to better understand this dynamic.

Without clarity on this, owners develop unrealistic expectations, and trainers take on unhealthy responsibility.

Dogs only change when their environment changes—and only when it changes longterm.

Good trainers coach their clients on how to best change the environment their dogs live in by changing how their clients interact with their dogs daily, moment to moment.

Thus the only way you “fix” dogs is by “fixing” their owners through competent coaching and education. Any other expectation or promise is a guaranteed trip to disappointment-land, for both parties.

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

This is a HOT topic! 🔥🔥🔥

Did you know this is the number one complaint we get outside of general puppy training challenges? 🚫🐾 Dog guardians all over are very upset about random dogs 🐶🔄 coming up to them while trying to enjoy time with their own dog. 😠🚫

🐾 We want to give our dogs more space to roam and depending on where you live you might be able to have your dog off leash in public areas or you might be bound to leash laws.

Here in NJ, dogs must be on leash while out in public. If you are on a trail or park by yourself and you let your dog off their leash the majority of people won't care. However, if someone comes on the trail or to the park, dogs should be put back on their leashes. This is just good etiquette. Even if you are located in a place where your dog can remain off leash, unless your dog has an excellent recall, your dog should be put on leash. 🐶🌳🚫

It doesn't matter if your dog is friendly. The dog your dog runs up to may not be dog friendly or may be fearful. You are now putting your dog in harm’s way.

Even if the other dog is friendly a conflict can still happen because a strange dog has rushed up and startled the dog or one of the dogs gets tangled in the leash. This also puts the person who is walking their dog on leash in harm’s way. 🐾😨🐾

Be mindful of other dogs and people when you have your dog off leash. Other people can be afraid of dogs (I know, as a dog lover this can be a hard concept to comprehend), someone may be allergic to dogs, or there could be another reason. 🙏❤️

No one begrudges providing dogs mental and physical enrichment. Be courteous when others are around. It will keep everyone and their dogs safe and out of harm’s way. 🐕🤝💚

Just a dog.
From time to time people tell me “chill out, it’s just a dog” or “it’s a lot of money just for a dog.” They don't understand the distance traveled, the time invested, or the costs incurred by "just a dog".
Some of my proudest moments have occurred with “just a dog.”
Many hours have passed being my only company "just a dog", but not for one moment did I feel despised. Some of my saddest moments have been because of “just a dog,” and on those gray days, the gentle touch of “just a Dog” gave me comfort and the reason to get through the day.
If you also think “it’s just a dog”, then you’ll probably understand phrases like “just a friend”, “just a sunrise” or “just a promise.” “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust and pure unbridled joy. “Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.
For "just a dog" I will get up early, take long walks and look forward to the future. So for me and people like me, it’s not “just a dog,” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the memories of the past, and the absolute joy of the moment. “Just a dog” brings out the good in me and takes my thoughts away from myself and daily worries.
I hope one day they can understand that it’s not “just a dog”, but the one that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a human.” So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog”, just smile because they “just don’t get it”.
