Maine C**n Appearance

The first thing you’ll likely notice about a Maine C**n cat is its size. Males are larger than females and can weigh 18 pounds or more, according to Vet Street. Because they were originally bred to survive outdoors in even the coldest of climates, they have thick, heavy coats over their large, muscular bodies. Though Maine coon's are definitely affectionate and social, they're not usually lap cats. This breed typically prefers to hang out beside you rather than on top of you—which can be a good thing, considering their size.

Maine C**n fans say that the popularity is due to the breed’s large size, intelligence, luxuriant coat, hardy disposition, and devotion to their human family.

Maine C**ns are kittens in big cat suits, gentle giants who are playful well into old age, as well as jumbo-sized packages of loving devotion. Maine C**ns can also be reserved around people with whom they’re not familiar, probably due to their jumbo-sized brains. Given time, however, even the most cautious adapt. This initial adjustment period is actually a decision-making process; Maine C**ns are deciding if these new humans have proven themselves worthy of trust. As soon as they make up their minds, however, they form close bonds with the entire household and become loving and devoted.

Most want to be near you but not on your lap.
