Saturday morning I received a call from a client. The tears and distress were heavy in her voice. I knew what was happening before she could say it. Her 35 year old gelding was down and she couldn't get him up, we were out the door within minutes. When we arrived our old man was still down and exhausted. He had been fighting to get up, but his body just wouldn't cooperate with his will. He was bright eyed and glad to enjoy a snack of some grain when Cleve suggested she give him some food to calm him.
While he enjoyed his very special treat we made the call to the emergency vet. We waited in the snow and cold with our old friend, soaking in the sight of him enjoying his grain. He was calm and content to lay there while he savored every morsel. The bits of grain he had peppered the clean snow with were carefully lipped up, once he had finished his breakfast pan.
The vet arrived almost too quickly, but we were all so relieved to see her drive up. Our old friend tried to stand up again at her approach. He always was a gentleman that way. But once again his old bones just wouldn't work like he was demanding they should. We calmed him with words of reassurance that he was such a good boy. The sedative he at first fought, like he'd fought to make it through his 34.5yrs on this earth. He finally gave in when Cleve pulled his head close to his chest, relaxing into his friend's gentle restraint and letting Cleve guide him down to lay in the quiet snow cover of his paddock.
We all kept talking to him, over and over again we told him that he was the best old horse. His momma stroked him face, told him how he was going to see his old friends again, and to join her husband too.
When he was at peace we went inside to warm up and wait for the neighbor with his backhoe. While Cleve chatted with her, I went back out to make sure everyone in heaven would recognize what a good horse he was. I patted his hip and told him I needed to borrow his tail to make his mom a very special keepsake.
When the neighbor arrived we went to select his final resting spot, alongside all his pasture mates who went before him. The neighbor enlisted Cleve to operate his backhoe and joined us ladies in the house. We shared stories of all our wonderful pets that we have loved over the years. While Cleve was digging he pulled up a big, beautiful rock. It became the perfect headstone for our old boy.
We left her place feeling broken hearted, but so utterly thankful too. Thankful that we had the privilege of caring for such a special soul for almost a decade and thankful to be able to be there for them during his last moments. 🐴🌈😭✨❀πŸ₯Ί

Rest in Peace Howdie, you truly were the best old man!

Something big is afoot for us this week!
Loaded up the stocks for the first time in about a year πŸ’ͺ🐴 We have a "new to us" draft team that needs some extra help when it comes to getting their shoes on safely. Here's hoping that Barney and Rocky appreciate a great set of shoeing stocks. πŸ˜‰πŸ€žπŸ‘

This year Fall has taken hold and won't let go. It's been an incredible few months of mild weather and beautiful days. We haven't even had a decent frost in this area yet.

But we all know Mother Nature is just biding her time and will hit us with a wallop of Winter when we least expect it! So we started adding Pinkies to our year round shoeing packages for the horses comfort and safety!

We also have some exciting news about a new offering and a new donation option for you all so stay tuned for that announcement soon!

What an incredible, close up look at the internal structure of the hoof! Lindsey is one of our favorite researches, we've been following her for years.

We also have some of her incredible teaching tools in our shoeing rig! So ask about seeing our cast cross sections of real hooves next time you see us. They're incredible and she devotes so much time to passing her knowledge on to others.

Fly season in Montana means that your horses are constantly battling swarms of nasty pests! The incessant stomping is not only hard on the poor horses joints but it can be hard on their feet and/or shoes too πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ˜¬πŸ΄πŸ₯ΊπŸͺ°

That steady concussion while trying to shoo the flies off of their legs causes all kinds of issues from chipping their bare hooves to broken nails and twisted shoes.

Farriers everywhere swear by fly boots for helping not only your horses, but you as well, and especially their time invested in keeping your horses feet going in the right direction!

We all know fly spray just adds flavor for the flies. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ€’πŸ€ͺ Plus you can soak your horses in those nasty chemicals and it still won't stop the bugs. So many farriers (us included) develop allergies and health issues from breathing in the fumes. Handling spray drenched legs causes those chemicals to also soak into your farrier's body and cause damage. Not to mention the insane cost of fly spray that just is not effective πŸ˜‘

Do yourself a huge favor.....head on over to visit our friend at Buzz Off Better Boots LLC and order your horses the best fly boots, from the best small business πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘πŸ˜‰ 😎 for the best prices and the BEST SERVICE. You all know we love our fellow small business owners and we appreciate you all shopping with them too!

Fellow small business owners, are you all aware of the new Beneficial Ownership Information Reporting Rule? There's a lot of confusion out there on it and we just filed our report. Super easy, no fees, and you can do it online! Here's a quick rundown of the new law as it pertains to small, domestic businesses like ours. Plus the link to their online site for your filing options!

"In 2021, Congress passed the Corporate Transparency Act on a bipartisan basis. This law creates a new beneficial ownership information reporting requirement as part of the U.S. government’s efforts to make it harder for bad actors to hide or benefit from their ill-gotten gains through shell companies or other opaque ownership structures."

"Domestic reporting companies are corporations, limited liability companies, and any other entities created by the filing of a document with a secretary of state or any similar office in the United States."

"FinCEN launched the BOI E-Filing website for reporting beneficial ownership information (https://boiefiling.fincen.gov) on January 1, 2024.

A reporting company created or registered to do business before January 1, 2024, will have until January 1, 2025, to file its initial BOI report.

A reporting company created or registered in 2024 will have 90 calendar days to file after receiving actual or public notice that its creation or registration is effective.

A reporting company created or registered on or after January 1, 2025, will have 30 calendar days to file after receiving actual or public notice that its creation or registration is effective."

"Please note that 23 types of entities are exempt from the beneficial ownership information reporting requirements. These entities include publicly traded companies meeting specified requirements, many nonprofits, and certain large operating companies.

The following table summarizes the 23 exemptions:
1) Securities reporting issuer
2) Governmental authority
3) Bank
4) Credit union
5) Depository institution holding company
6) Money services business
7) Broker or dealer in securities
8) Securities exchange or clearing agency
9) Other Exchange Act registered entity
10) Investment company or investment adviser
11) Venture capital fund adviser
12) Insurance company
13) State-licensed insurance producer
14) Commodity Exchange Act registered entity
15) Accounting firm
16) Public utility
17) Financial market utility
18) Pooled investment vehicle
19) Tax-exempt entity
20) Entity assisting a tax-exempt entity
21) Large operating company
22) Subsidiary of certain exempt entities
23) Inactive entity"

I'll include the direct link to their Frequently Asked Questions in the comments!
