🎉🐾 Don't forget, exotic pet owners! Fireworks aren't just upsetting for cats and dogs, but sometimes for our birds and small mammals too! 🐦🦇

Fireworks can be dazzling and beautiful, but it's important to be mindful of the impact they can have on our exotic pets. Birds and mammals can also experience distress and anxiety due to the loud noises and bright lights. Here are a few tips to help keep them calm:

1️⃣ Create a cozy haven: Set up a quiet and secure space for your exotic pets away from windows and noise. Provide familiar toys, bedding, and hiding spots to make them feel safe and comfortable.

2️⃣ Soothing sounds: Playing soft, calming music or white noise can help drown out the sound of fireworks and create a soothing environment for your pets.

3️⃣ Dim the lights: Close curtains or blinds to reduce the intensity of the flashing lights outside. Creating a darker, more peaceful atmosphere can help alleviate anxiety for your beloved pets.

4️⃣ Consult the vet: If you're unsure about how to best support your exotic pet during this time, don't hesitate to reach out to our team of specialized exotic pet veterinarians. They can provide valuable advice and recommend additional strategies tailored to your pet's specific needs.

Remember, our feathered and furry companions rely on us to keep them safe and secure. Let's make this fireworks season as stress-free as possible for all our pets, including those of the more exotic kind! 🌟

Dr. Sands utilizes endoscopy and performs a dental procedure on this guinea pig. This guinea pig has severe tongue entrapment due to elongated mandibular lingual points. It is important to recognize the signs of dental disease in your guinea pig. Eating less, becoming picky with food, refusing treats, smaller or less stool, changes in stool, and lethargy are just some signs of dental disease.

Warning ⚠️ ⚠️ content contains bloody imagery! Here are some snippets from our dental extraction on a surrendered rabbit. This rabbit came in for severe incisor overgrowth, with both mandibular incisors curving towards the nares. He is a young man, about 5 to 6 years old, and eating much more comfortably now. His initial symptoms were a reduced appetite and reduced stool production. As you can see, the rabbit tooth root is very long, thus arguably making it a more challenging surgery than dogs and cats. We have been told that his recovery post-dental is going exceptionally well!

Our LVT Stephanie assisted Dr.Malka in a workup on his own cat, Maddie. Maddie, thought she was quite nervous, was an absolute delight to have in the clinic for a short time. We feel fortunate to have a staff that works so efficiently and lovingly to help support each other and our animal family members in anyway that we can. We normally do not see cats or dogs, but contact us today for a visit with your exotics pet!

PSA: Our veterinary clinic is not happy about a trend that we've been seeing lately! It is a misconception that some people may have after watching the Dawn soap commercial, where they bathe rescue ducklings, that bird owners should be regularly bathing their birds with soap or other detergents. If you find yourself concerned about the appearance and hygiene of your bird, schedule a visit first with an exotics veterinarian to assess your bird's overall health. First, encourage your bird to self-bathe and you may additionally offer a gentle misting spray with water alone. Be cautious bathing your bird near a slippery faucet, especially if they exhibit signs of anxiety and stress. Birds should never be washed with high pressure shower heads or an outdoor hose. Please enjoy all our pictures of our patients and clinic pets enjoying their routine, bird-safe baths.

Tubes can be an efficient way of positioning a snake for a quick radiograph. Many snakes tend to appreciate the tube as a nifty tunnel that they are eager to see the end of. This snake enjoyed her tube so much that she was hesitant to leave it. Radiographs may be recommended by an exotics veterinarian to screen for bone quality, concerns for foreign body/ impaction, and suspected reproductive activity.

Quick quiz:

What causes bumblefoot in guinea pigs?

A) thin floor padding leading to inadequate foot support
B) aspen/wood shavings as bedding
C) hay on the floor
Dl overweight with little to no exercise/small cage preventing adequate exercise
E) not cleaning your cage enough/ poor hygiene

Well, actually it can be any or all of the above! Bumblefoot, or podermatitis, is an inflammatory condition that affects the skin on the bottom of the feet. The skin on the bottom of your guinea pig's feet is extremely sensitive, prone to little sores or tears that can become infected. Severe cases of podermatitis can even lead to an amputation or cause an early death in your guinea pig!

If you think your guinea pig may be developing podermatitis, schedule a vet visit to intervene and prevent it from worsening.

Our Story

For Dr. Shachar Malka, it has always been a dream to run his own veterinary clinic. Many veterinarians and people would quickly assume that this veterinary clinic would serve dogs and cats, but little did they know that Dr. Malka had even greater plans. For over 15 years, Dr. Malka worked tirelessly with birds. During that time he even became a board-certified avian specialist. He also grew to love other exotic animals.

Dr. Malka was determined to pick the best location to start an exclusive exotic animal veterinary clinic where doctors and technicians were trained to work with all types of animals. Great Neck, NY made perfect sense. There was such a need for an exotic animal emergency and wellness center that Dr. Malka was certain he had chosen the right place.

Dr. Malka made fast work to bring in some amazing staff members and great diagnostic equipment. There is one piece of technology that separates LIBEVC from the rest: a CT machine. This machine allows doctors to get the best picture possible of what is happening within an animal, which helps them make the best diagnosis they can. For exotic animals, this can be life saving. CT scans can make a tremendous difference in the lives of exotic animals due to their delicate nature and (sometimes small) size.

Here at LIBEVC, we provide cutting edge veterinary care for pet birds, exotic mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and any other exotic animals, including wildlife rescued by rehabilitators and sanctuaries. We take every possible measure to give your pets the care they deserve.
