Foster update:
Unfortunately Highway took a turn for the worse...
Sadly, Highway passed in my arms a short time ago. What people don't always remember is that everything happens for a reason. Highway was found on the interstate, small, weak, sick, and malnourished. Our first thought is always that he was thrown away by a human. There is actually a good chance that he was left by his mother. It is normal for a mother to leave an unhealthy/sick kitten, instinct tells them they won't make it.
That being said, he was picked up by an amazing family, and brought to a rehabilitator where he received the medical attention, and love he needed. He never fully recovered with multiple courses of antibiotics...although he was happy and playful until he took a drastic turn for the worse. His bloated fluid filled belly got worse after deworming, leading to more diagnostics. Highway had FIP, (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) a fatal viral disease that can effect cats. Although a new antiviral medication exists, Highway was too far gone. Sadly, we opted to keep him comfortable in the home he knew, with the people he loved until it was time to say Goodbye. Today, he snuggled up against my chest wrapped in a blanket and took his last breath... a small purr could be heard until just before he said goodbye. As hard as it was to let him go, and write this, I felt that I needed to share his story, because not all can be saved.... but they can be loved to the end. ππΎ Rip super kitty π±
