What's happening today at Buddy's?
Well...Poppy is here getting an ACTH test. Why? To help us determine if she has Cushing's disease.
Cushing's disease, also known as hyperadrenocorticism, is a serious hormonal disorder in dogs that's caused by excess cortisol levels. It can affect multiple organ systems and lead to dangerous complications.
Common symptoms of Cushing's disease in dogs include:
Excessive drinking and urination
A swollen stomach, also known as a "pot-belly"
Bald patches, especially on the sides, flanks, and tail
Excessive hunger
Dark patches on the skin
Thin, scaly skin that's prone to blackheads and infections
Wounds that are slow to heal
Low energy (lethargy)
Panting more than usual
Muscle loss or wastage
Cushing's disease can be caused by:
A benign or malignant tumor in the pituitary gland, which is located at the base of the brain
A tumor in the adrenal glands, which are located on top of the kidneys
Taking corticosteroids, such as prednisone, to treat another medical condition
A rare genetic disorder that causes the adrenal glands to release too much cortisol after a dog has eaten
Cushing's disease can be successfully treated with medication. Vetoryl is the only licensed treatment for use in dogs.
