Super excited to work with this mustang!
Took about 30 minutes to get a halter on this guy, he loaded right into the trailer with his goat friend 🤣 Excited to post his progress!

Softness starts on the ground not in the saddle.

So many trainers these days don’t focus on groundwork anymore and run into so many problems down the road because they have holes in their foundation. Here we focus on creating a soft, responsive, honest horse that is set up for any discipline the owners decide!

As I’m sure most of you know Gr**go, but I’m not sure if you all know that Gr**go is who started our training business. I was introduced to Gr**go when he was about 1.5 years old, and I was asked if I wanted to try my hand at helping break out a stud c**t from the ground up. I had never trained a horse before, let alone completely start one! However, I did my research and through a lot of dedication, teamwork and passion for doing things right and wanting things perfect, Gr**go was finished ✔️ Everyone doubted us, he had a bum leg, he’ll never compete, he’ll be retired by the time he’s 5 with that leg, he’ll certainly never barrel race, but this new year will mark our 8th year together and we are still going strong 💪 Thank you Gr**go for opening up all of these doors for us💕 We have had a lot of horses in for training over these years whether they were clients or personal horses and even though the horses come and go, the passion for training remains the same💖

Remember, you aren’t riding with your eyes, you are riding by FEEL, here’s a great exercise to try to work on to focus on the feeling in your hands rather than watching the horses head

What’s the difference between horsemanship and barrel racing? When you set a can up. That’s it.

You don’t have to have the barrels, or do a barrel drill to work on the barrels. If you improve your horsemanship by learning by the mechanics of movement, how to move individual parts and then put them back together so that you can teach the horse how to best use his body—you are working on the barrels.

If you took six months off from barrels and only watched c**t starting and reining cow training videos, and worked with someone local-ish who knows true horsemanship—when you finally set up a barrel again, you would be amazed at how great your horse would work the barrels.

The can sitting in the arena is the only difference. Am I saying you never need to pattern? Of course not. I’m saying, don’t get so focused on the can that you forget about horsemanship. Just the PSA that’s on my mind today, for whatever it’s worth, or not 🤗

Things I think EVERY BEGINNER BARREL RACER SHOULD HEAR:

1. One run a day is enough for your horse, rollovers are your friend! This one will make most of your alley issues disappear.

2. A good farrier is important, cheap isn’t saving you money. What you don’t spend on the farrier, you’ll spend on the vet.

3. Have a good performance vet on your side, the simple shots and coggins vet isn’t going to cut it.

4. A broke horse is a great horse. Teach your horse to do more than just turn circles.

5. You’re as much as an athlete as your horse. Treat yourself like one.

6. Don’t let small minded friends keep you from your goals. Don’t let others opinions keep you from growing.

7. If someone hauls you and your horse, or lends you a horse. Say thank you, return the favor. Buy them a drink, pinch in for fuel, or buy them dinner. It goes a long way!

8. Negativity shouldn’t be allowed in the truck. Positive vibes only.

9. Find a mentor, someone who isn’t afraid to tell you the truth when you need it and don’t want to hear it.

10. If the horse isn’t working or it’s keeping you from growing, it is okay to sell it. Horses are stepping stones.

Stay tuned, over the next few weeks I’m going to hit each of these points in depth and give you the “whys” behind these thoughts. ❤️
