I always tell my clients we want to work our dogs confidence and focus so well they can attend a parade without issue.
But that's an end goal, not the first place I'd throw a dog! So how do you know when to increase distractions and stimulation?
1. Practice in low stimulating environments a lot
2. Then add loud stimulation at a distance, working your way closer over the course of a few lessons.
3. Be prepared to work your dog through unexpected stimulation when you're out with them ( example walking where a motorcycle or ambulance could pass)
4. Be sure your dog isn't going through a fear stage
5. When ready to increase stimulation, be sure you have space to move away when needing to work your dog.

I know some of these are hard to hear and many of us have been there. Honestly, these aren't a problem, if owners are willing to work through and manage any behaviors that may come with not choosing based on an assessment!

Research the breed, especially the energy level and size!

Viewing puppies together can allow you to compare energy and confidence levels.

Give the puppy time to warm up - some puppies especially shelters puppies may need 10-20 minutes to be comfortable enough to walk around or play.

View a dogs body language - are they excited, cowering or running away?

Picking the right puppy should take time and not be made on impulse. Both genetics and environment play a part in a dogs personality and demeanor.

Progress is made 1 session at a time. Don't think you can teach a dog a solid, consistent down stay in 1 week.
