MacMaster's Ashaninka Extreme Red Dwarf Cichlid
Now available at Red Fish Blue Fish!
https://redfishbluefish.shop

We now have available easily the most colorful MacMasteri Dwarf Cichlids we have ever seen – the Ashaninka Extreme Red! Roughly half of the fish, from the head and down to approximately halfway through the body, is the deepest red you will ever find on an Apistogramma. The border of the red coloration is arranged in curious squarish shapes which we’ve never observed in any fish before. These fish are very difficult to source, and we expect them to sell out rapidly.

The Apistogramma macmasteri is a gorgeous dwarf cichlid which originally comes from a drainage of the rio Meta on the slopes of the eastern Andes in Colombia, and later discovered in the same river, further upstream. In their natural forms, the males have a beautiful white to yellow wash, which is typically covered in an iridescent powdery blue on the entire body, sometimes extending up into the face as well. The fins are the most remarkable on this species of Apistogrammas, typically a reddish orange base color, with bright, opaque baby blue streaks covering the fin rays, and feathering out towards the top. The fin ray extensions are then covered in a shadowy black line, which makes the fin almost fade into the water, contrasting strongly with the hard-outlined blueish white. The top and bottom of the tail fins have a dense red patch which surrounds a golden yellow center. The females have the same fins, albeit with shorter extensions, and their bodies are a solid sunny yellow.

When this species of nano fish was originally collected, it would have been from very soft, acidic water that is slowly flowing. In this water, the ph would not be above 6, and would have an undetectable hardness. In the case of our tank bred specimens, they are much less fussy about their water parameters, and you can keep them in water hardness up to 250ppm. One thing to keep in mind is that in the wild these fish would have plenty of rotting leaves and branches, which not only acidify and soften the water, but also provide hiding places for small fry and subdominant fish to hide in, as well as feed from. The most important factor is that you have a well cycled filter, as cichlids tend to be fairly messy when they eat, and this species is one that has a rather small mouth, so it tends to tear its food up into smaller chunks than many other species too, although they are very willing to eat anything that you offer.

When considering tankmates for these little guys, most options work. There are many species of small tetras to choose from if you wish to go for a more naturalistic community tank, or there are many different strains of guppies and other livebearers, or even go with a small group of only the Apistogramma macmasteri, and see how they interact with each other in a species only tank. This species does tend to be fairly peaceful to each other, so you may even be able to get some babies out of a few pairs occupying the same tank. Whichever you choose, these little cichlids will add a pop of color and a friendly interaction to your aquarium!

Blue Hawaiian Moscow Guppy Breeder Pairs
Now available at Red Fish Blue Fish!
https://redfishbluefish.shop

Many have asked for them and so we are pleased to offer the absolutely legendary Blue Hawaiian Moscow Guppy strain available only in pairs (no trios are available so please do not ask). These USA tank-bred specimens are avaliable in limited quantities only. The males are an amazing deep blue color which fades to a green-azure on some males, and others have almost a yellow-green shimmer in some places; this amazing combination of hues can only be described as 'Blue Hawaiiian'! Another wonderful trait of this particular guppy strain is that they do not eat their fry at all. This is a very rare, very limited strain of guppy that we offer only once in a blue moon.

These fish normally prefer to live in harder water, but they are also very adaptable, able to do well in softer water as well, and not seeming to care about the Ph as long as it is not too extreme. Guppies and endlers both in general do appreciate having a bit of flow to swim against, as they are active and current will keep them busy, but please take care not to provide them with too much water current as the males have large, flowing tails. Decorations as well as plants are a great addition to the tank as this will allow subdominant fish to hide, as well as fry to have a place to hide. A filter which works efficiently is the most important part, as these fish will continue to make more and more offspring, which will contribute to the bioload of the tank, and you do not want to overwhelm the tank.

When thinking of tankmates for this fish, most fish will be a good choice, since these little fish are quick and able to compete with larger things for food with little problem, and yet are not aggressive, and do not bother anybody. No matter what your preference, you are almost guaranteed to find that these guppies suit your tastes, and with their small size and peaceful nature, you can include them in smaller fish tanks as well. These fish ship individually bagged.

Breitbinden Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma megaptera)
Now available at Red Fish Blue Fish!
https://redfishbluefish.shop

An extremely rare Apistogramma dwarf cichlid which we have been after for quite some time, this living jewel hails from the upper Orinoco River system and was known for many years simply as the “Breitbinden” Apistogramma. Breitbinden is German for “broad band” and refers to the broad black banding that runs from the eye downward. It has just recently been scientifically described and is now known as “Apistogramma Megaptera”. The Greek word ‘Megaptera’ refers to the species’ very large fins.

The males of the species reach a maximum size of around 3 inches, with the females topping out at around 1.75 inches in maximum length. These fish are usually found in waters that are a bit warmer than where one would typically expect to find Apistogramma, with an average temperature of 78 degrees F, however these tank-bred beauties are well suited for temperatures as low as 73 degrees F. Just as with other Apistogramma species, these fish are found in very soft water which is rather slack and slow-moving.

The coloration of these fish is unlike any other Apistogramma specimen. Black bands run down from their eyes and on some male specimens, there are large purple spots on their faces. Their bodies are the most curious butterscotch which becomes a muted amber in places on the flanks of the fish. Bright blue dots adorn the masks on the male fish. We have already noted that these fish will change colors very dramatically if kept on a dark bottom; we suggest keeping them on a lighter colored substrate so that they show their best colors. They have huge fins, and the caudal tail fins of the males are shaped very much like the 'Elizabethae'. Keeping Apistogramma megaptera in a sand-bottomed tank with rocks, wood and plants will help them to settle in and feel as if they’re back out in the wild. The fish we have on offer readily accept frozen daphnia and fish flakes with no problem. Males of the species often squabble over territory and over females, which is fairly typical of any cichlid but in a short time, they will find their natural place in your planted aquarium.

For those who would like to breed these fish, they are to be treated as any other Apistogramma. Provide them with caves in which to breed and nice soft water which is not flowing very rapidly and feed them with plenty of their favorite foods and within a short time, your pair of fish should retire to a cave and lay eggs on the walls and ceiling. Within a couple of days, tiny fry will appear and hug the bottom of the sandy bottom, hiding by instinct. At this point, the mother fish will become extremely aggressive and challenge any fish that she deems a threat to her babies. We always recommend removing all fish except for Mommy to let her take care of the young fry. Feeding them on newly hatched baby brine shrimp is the fastest way to grow them and ensure the health of the young wrigglers.

Introducing the Ancistrus sp. L180 'Rio Lajeado' Bristlenose Pleco. This amazing fish originally comes from Rio Lajeado, Maranhão but the specimens we have on hand were tank-bred here in the USA. They are true Ancistrus, so the males (and some females to a lesser degree) will form fleshy protuberances or 'bristles’ on their snouts, hence the common name ‘Bristle-nosed Pleco’. These fish are vegetarians and feed on algae, zucchini, spirulina, green beans, and often enjoy spending time on and around wood, so keeping them in an aquarium well-stocked with Malaysian driftwood or similar will make for a happy home for these wonderful fish.

Ancistrus sp. L180 are members of the yellow-white dot complex of Ancistrus. They are similar to the 'Peppermint L181 Pleco' but they are their own species. They are not aggressive at all and would make a wonderful addition to your community aquarium. They tend to be shy, especially when introduced to a new aquarium or environment. Giving them shadowy places to retreat to will help ease them into your aquarium. These fish are approximately 2 to 3 inches each. 08/09/2021

This tiny but colorful fish is native to Papua New Guinea and Northern Australia. Pseudomugil gertrudae, or Gertrude's Spotted Blue Eye Rainbowfish, was named for the wife of Dr. Hugo Merton, a German naturalist who visited the Aru Islands, eastern Indonesia, in 1907 and 1908. As with almost all other fish, males of the species are more colorful and intricately patterned than are the females. Male Pseudomugil gertrudae also have longer finnage, especially on their pectoral fins which arch up and then down as with other dwarf rainbowfish. Completely peaceful but sometimes prone to jumping (especially when startled), these fish do best in groups of eight or more. They are a shoaling species, choosing to hang out in a large group but not necessarily moving in a unified direction, even when under stress or threat. Because these are dwarf rainbowfish, they are extremely small and so keeping a small clan of them in a 10-gallon nano aquarium is perfectly acceptable, however you should be aware that these fish are diminutive in size and in courage as well. They need cover, peace and privacy to unwind so placing them into a heavily planted aquarium will make them happy and will go far in mimicking their natural environment. Please do not attempt to keep these fish in an aquarium with other larger, aggressive fish. Gertrude's Spotted Blue Eye Rainbowfish feed readily on fish flakes, live food that is small as well as frozen food such as baby brine shrimp and daphnia. In the wild Pseudomugil gertrudae feeds primarily on tiny crustaceans and insects on leaves, on the bottom and in the water column; feeding these wonderful nano fish a nutritious food should be easy but make sure that it is small enough for the little fellows to enjoy. This fish is often found in tannin-stained waters in the wild with hardness quite low and, in some cases, has no dissolved solids not unlike rainwater. They prefer inhabiting waters in the wild with floating vegetation, probably to avoid being caught and eaten by birds and other predators swooping in from above. These fish should not be placed into an immature aquarium as they do not tolerate wild water parameter swings, and they much prefer well-oxygenated water. This is a tiny fish, with males and females never reaching two inches in length. In captivity, feeding them on live and frozen food in a heavily planted aquarium with somewhat diffuse lighting should eventually cause breeding to occur. These fish prefer to lay eggs in moss such as Flame Moss, Weeping Moss and so on. These wonderful dwarf rainbowfish prefer temperatures between 70 F and 82 F, tolerate a water pH range of 5 to 7.5, and water hardness anywhere from 80 to 210 ppm. If this fish is kept in a community setting, please ensure they are receiving enough food because they are easily frightened off and out-competed.

Ludwigia peruensis is a wonderful aquarium plant and is notable for its pointed leaves and ability to turn deep crimson under higher lighting. This plant does not necessarily require CO2 supplementation but it is helpful to achieve good growth and vigor. In a high light setup, it is often used in the mid-ground of aquascapes because intense lighting causes the plant to grow more compact. This plant is generally appropriate for less advanced aquatic horticulturalists. Visit us online at https://redfishbluefish.shop
