Rams we used and the ewes we are going to sell!! No one reads past the first line but we are horrible about making post and keeping page updated so it will it be a long post but worth reading.
Rams,
There was a rhyme to our reason and a method to our madness on our ram selection. It is not always about extreme muscle and the coveted s**g. Those are good qualities but often breeders go for the single traited lambs and forget the important things. I will give up a little power and s**g for a lamb that has correct neck set, square hip that does not pin in, tight hide, and that walks. I think the blackface matings check off those boxes while still producing the popular white and natural features for personal choices.
Dorsets are a hard one. Only have a handful of papered dorsets and trying to maintain some papers but there are only a few papered dorsets rams that have the correct clubby build. I guess in January we will see how this train wreck unfolds.
Ewes,
We cull hard and have built a set of females that are not hard doers with feet problems that will lay down a spit out a sellable lamb year after year. Our goal for several years is to cut our numbers way back and concentrate more on a flush program. We turned out cleanup rams yesterday and will ultrasound in October. When we get our keepers home after state fair we will do a sale list. These will not be culls and the only 2 half baggers I know we own will not be on the list. These ewes were good enough for us to bred and I am not scared to lamb them out but we just have way to many ewes. They will range from our keeper ewes to 6 yr olds. Most will be old show ewes. Some will be really good producers but maybe one of this and that genetically that we are trying to just narrow down gene pool. They are forsale but not onsale. Prices will vary depending on who and what they are. There are 30 to 40 we will put a price on but goal is to cut 15 to 20, so it will be buyers choice and plenty of buyable ewes. In this lot there will be open ewe lambs, exposed matures, and some from our ai group. They will be sold as is where is but none will be sold with any known health issues.
Lambs that are born in this group will be ABL eligible. If you want to start breeding Arkansas Junior Sheep Council - AJSC lambs this will be a great opportunity to start.
