May is National Pet Month!

National Pet Month is a celebration of the benefits that pets bring into our lives - and vice versa. The aims of National Pet Month are to promote responsible pet ownership, support pet adoption, make people aware of the benefits of pets for people, plus the positive impacts that owners can have on their pets. It also aims to increase public awareness of services available from professionals who work with animals and raise awareness of the role, value and contribution to society that companion animals have.

We performed emergency surgery on Belle on Friday in the evening. She had a uterine infection (pyometra) which required us to remove her uterus. Ordinarily the uterine horns are about the diameter of your pinkie finger, but when a dog develops a uterine infection they can become much larger as you will see in the video below.

This surgery is inherently risky as the uterus is filled with bacteria and pus. If there were leakage from the uterus or if the uterus were to rupture, this could result in death. Thankfully Belle's owners noticed her having vulvar discharge a few weeks after she had been in heat.

Belle is doing very well now. Best wishes Belle!!!

Don't ignore your pet's bad breath! That odor might signify a serious health risk. Dental health is a critical part of your pet’s overall health, and dental problems can cause, or be caused by, other health problems. Your pet's teeth and gums should be checked yearly by your veterinarian. Pet owners should have a daily ritual for keeping their pet's teeth and gums in good health.
